  • I am so fascinated by this mysterious drink, and am highly intrigued by the paraphernalia. Absinthe dispensers are incredibly beautiful, so are the spoons, and its nickname, the Green Fairy, gives it a mystical air. I will do a special line of paintings all about absinthe and its beauty. One day I'd like to get my hands on a legal taste of it.

  • So they banned this based on lies and money and it only took 100 years to lift the ban. Don't you just love government?

  • This is the first time I heard about absinthe. I used to watch this show 24/7. I wish history channel would get back to more shows like this. I understand that the shows they have now are more proffitable, but maybe they should just make an extreme jobs channel. lets face it, half of those shows aren't history shows.

  • To all missinformed people that like pseudo-crap absinthes and say this is not real absinthe, and also compare it to cannabis. Please dont be ignorant and read more. Look for the Wormwood society association and look for science documents done by highly respected science people.

  • They legalised this.... But weed, is still illegal.

What has this world come to?

  • nahhh i drank absinthe straight up. shit got me fucked up and had the worst hangover of my life

  • Very informative video...I look forward to preparing absinthe sometime soon when I find the right tools and ingredients to do it the right way

  • big deal, MJ makes more govt money illegal. absinthe is awesome

  • This poison is legal Cannabis herb is illegal, what a crazy world we are forced to live in!

  • Absinthe is neither illegal nor poisonous. It just tastes horrible.

  • @RatkoUSA Absinthe doesn't taste horrible. It only has terrible imitations. (Actually, some Czech brands even go for a horrible taste on purpose. So they taste more "serious" :)

  • Thumbs up if you think Scope should sue Le Tourment Vert for stealing their recipe.

  • the only legal one in the US lack the cannabinoid ingredient!!!! sux but true

  • @PUArtista The active ingredient, thujone, is in the US drinks too, but it's percentage is low.

  • @PUArtista

Not true. Absente Originale and Lucid both contain Wormwood. There is no cannaboid present in any absinthe anywhere. Wormwood is NOT a cannaboid

  • Since this vid is from 2006, remember that absinthe has been legal in the US since March of 2007.

  • what brand is the absinthe in this segment?

  • @chrizzly13

Jade Liqueurs Fine Absinthes, and I recommend Jade 1901, best around imho.

  • i thought its meant to be a sugar cube with cold water not just water

  • @darkroge Sugar was a matter of fashion, originally... it's up to your taste, but it doesn't really need sugar. It's not bitter.

  • pork chop sandwiches!

  • ; ( I once hallucinated from absinthe, til' I found out it was old gatorade..

  • @thechillinvillain Could have been the mold on the old Gatorade that made you trip. lol

  • its legal now

  • ahem...

ABSINTHE WILL NEVER MAKE YOU HALUCINATE, NO MATTER WHAT BRAND YOU DRINK OR HOW MUCH YOU DRINK.

    ACCEPT IT.

  • I know Ted (TA) so this is really cool seeing him on here. He made it to where some kinds of it are legal here in the US, it is called Lucid, and is VERY good. So if you like Absinthe then this would be one to try.

  • Clear-headed intoxication is amazing.

  • Finally glad it's no longer banned in the US. My home town was the first to start distilling in the US again. Look for St. George's Spirits in Alameda.

  • @archt01 cool i live in alameda

  • had some last night...wow

  • I just had some imported from Germany last night. I had 3 shots and never saw anything...

Its not as horrible as the old legends tell you.

  • @BFKAnthony817 did you get it with wormwood lol

  • @jaso19 Of course I did. Don't believe what the government tells you. It was all made up just like the reefer madness propaganda films back in the 30's.

  • Is anything Christian Brother's makes remotely drinkable? I've only tried brandy.

  • i'm drinking Absinthe for the first time and it isn't as bad as i thought

  • Forever MAGİC MASHROOM !!

    I LOVE YOU TURKEY !

    I LOVE YOU AMSTERDAM

  • Lucid is one of the better brands!

  • well, yes and no. for the price point, Lucid is probably one of the better ones because it's REAL absinthe, as opposed to czech "absinth" that is more akin to dyed vodka. However, as far as legitimate absinthes go, Lucid is pretty average. a good absinthe I'd suggest would be Delaware Phoenix or Vieux Carre, which are both American-made brands.

  • yea good luck yall because i bought three bottles imported from germany, lol 200 us dollars have fun they were only .5 liter bottles

  • Being a chemist is awesome.

Drinking absinthe to "test" out your theories.

  • YEW COPPER SULFATE FTW

  • Actually it is legal in the US, I just bought a bottle the other day.

  • Legalized in 2007.

  • About time!

  • It's legal in the U.S. now.

  • I just bought a bottle of Le Tourment Vert at a Majestics Liquor store in Grandburry Tx . Its from France and has a stamp on it with the word Wormwood.

  • 30,000 liters of Absinthe = Heaven.

  • When I die, I hope God has a top-shelf bar in Heaven.

I imagine heavenly booze to be so powerful, that one sip gets you drunk for a million years, and the only hangover you get is pure nirvana.

  • Great vid... very educational... love absinthe!

  • that shit tastes like black liquorish!

  • yeah it really does, I don;t understand why all the thumbs down

  • So basically it's like regular alcohol but with a funky taste.

I'll stick with my grain alcohol.

  • well I wouldn't say it's like regular grain alcohol, at least the inebriation form it isn't. it has a funky taste, but not bad persay. it trades the harshness of most hard alcohols for a funky flavor and aroma. I would compare the drunkeness to that of wine, very fun, laughable, pleasing. and even beter than that, it doesn't have bad hangover effects that wine can have. I drank absinthe the night after watching this video, he waqs correct about everything, plus whatg I've just said

  • I've had Absinthe before. It was most definently original. I actually kind of liked it. It takes a little getting used to.

  • I vert agen c vert le tourment y

  • wow thats was interesting! as anyone tired it b4?

  • in hong kong they have a absinth bar it would good it just smelled weird and I did it alot in japan. its not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

  • yeah really good stuff

  • good stuff

  • this really makes you hallucinate? what absinthe brand is good.. i heard LTV is really good

  • It does not make you hallucinate. The aspect which caused people to hallucinate was the addition of laudanum (a syrup of opium) to the sugar cubes.

  • Not only is LTV dreadful, but it's not even real absinthe. It seems they have company "shills" on here that post bullshit endorsements of it to try to dupe the ignorant into wasting their money on it. They also try to sell it as some sort of illicit, drug like experience.

That's the kind of business practices they use, because they know their product itself can't stand on it's own two feet.

  • then who would you sugest then?

  • I would say buy the most expensive bottle you can afford. it will be worth it

  • i will look into it. thank you much.

  • Actually the most expensive absinthes are really not the best. To be sure, go with something swiss, since they are the only country to actually have regulations on absinthe. I don't know of a bad absinthe from Switzerland, maybe some of them aren't exciting but none of them are bad.

  • @JunmaiShu just tried LTV. Tastes like Brut 44 or maybe Stetson cologne.

  • well depending on where you are I can recommend more palatable choices. The good news is... you can only go up from there.

  • @JunmaiShu Amen! this is why i drink ONLY La Clandestine!

  • Excellent choice, but "only"? You're missing out on some good stuff that way. Emile Pernot is putting out some bomb shit these days. But Meadow of Love has really become my go-to... at least until Ridge makes it way to my neck of the woods.

  • well alcohol is bad anyhow...

  • Authentic absinthe recipe: In a 2 quart pitcher, mix 1 bottle of Burnett's vodka, 1 packet of lemon-lime Kool-Aid, 1 bottle of NyQuil (green), add water, stir well. Serve chilled.

  • Everyone guve thumbs down and/or flag this comment. It's ignorance like this that gets people sick and gives these bad myths about absinthe fuel to grow.

  • Ok then... Question.

Where in the USA can I get some now?

And what brand won't make me kill my family?

  • drinkupny(dot)com

And none of it will make you kill your family, or anyone for that matter. Those are just myths and urban legends. If you're looking for a drug-like experience you will be disappointed.

  • Thank you-

But I don't drink, But my friends do lol, Know of any other hardcore drinks? other then Everclear?

  • I'm not a hardcore drinker. I drink mostly for the social aspect of it, and taste, though I won't lie... a nice buzz never hurts.

I pretty much stick to absinthe, wine and good single malt scotch.

  • buy it online form another country

  • Just a question, where can you buy the absinthe glass in France??? Do they only sell them in special shop?

  • this is a boring question. What does it taste like, or can you only taste the sugar?

  • Very strong liquorice.

  • It is much more than that. Don't think it is like Jagermeister. It does have a licorice flavor but there are several nuances to the flavor. If you are in the US try Lucid brand. It is comparable with some of the very good EU brands.

  • Funny... and all this time I thought it was anise I was tasting, not licorice.

  • Of course you are right but remember most of us Americans don't know what anise is. If you have never tried absinthe there is very little than you can reference that most people here will understand.

  • Anise is an herb which creates the flavor of black licorice.

  • To the untrained palate perhaps. I personally never liked black licorice, and still don't. I do however love me some absinthe, and anise pizzels. I find it completely different.

Then again, look at the beer most American's drink. They probably couldn't distinguish Jager from a quality absinthe.

  • Absinthe rules. this guy makes the US legal brand "Lucid"

  • hey where can you get absinthe in america can you get it like in mmm...walmart or something. i need to try some of that stuff.

  • Hey Ted, I have this LPM that I need burned :).

If any of you know the Taurus SHO, you'll know that Ted was one of the OhGees with tuning it.

  • has anyone had an absinthe session and COMPLETELY blacked out?? apparently i was punching tables but i dont remember shit. i love that fucking stuff lol

  • sorry my friend... but you were just drunk from the alcohol, and not feeling the herb effect what so ever. absinthe is not meant to be taken as shots nor to be drank quickly. try a bottle from Jade Liqueurs, do some research on how to properly prepare it and enjoy a true absinthe. and be prepared to shell out $150.00

  • you can buy a bottle of absinthe in the states from this guy personally (not really, but from his company) for about 60 bucks. called Lucid. there are other brands as well. and yes, it does contain the Grande Wormwood herb. no fakie stuff. and no, it does not make you hallucinate- thujone is a convulsant, not a hallucinagen. in high doses will make you retch, not see things.

  • i'm sorry... i'm a absinthe purest, and Lucid is by far not a absinthe i'd buy. i may try a glass... but i fear its another one of the mass produced absinthe after the uninformed market.

  • Have you even tried it? It sounds as if you haven't. I would urge you to. While it is not up to the standards of the Jade line- it is very good for the price and accessibility. BTW Why do you think Breaux would put out a shit product to the "uninformed market", you know this guy has a lot of credibility and respect for Absinthe.

  • i have tried it, and its ok... its not nearly as good in my opinion. its good for people stepping into the absinthe world for the first time though, so i give it up for that. but once you have a true absinthe one not changed to meet what they think americans will enjoy... then you're appreciation changes. Lucid is a good back up for when you're waiting on or saving up for a better.

  • Agreed shaokem. I also have an appreciation for Lucid not only as a primer for better absinthes as you noted but also because I believe it helped get the ball rolling for more absinthes (which hopefully means better absinthes) to make their way into the US. Already there are more than 12 absinthes available in the US.

  • VERY GOOD!!!

  • I love drinking this stuff it tastes so good.

FLAMIN SHOTS ALL NIGHT LONG :-P

  • Im intrested in buying this, from a europing site, and im not sure if it's legal to buy from U.S, not sure what the deal is and all that, if anyone has some info send me a msg.

  • All the info. you need can be found right here:

    wormwoodsociety(dot)org

In short... yes it is legal in the U.S., but the pickins are a bit slim as of now. On that site there's a list of recommended vendors. I recommend Liqueurs de France. They are UK based.

  • its now leagal

  • @DA1EMMERSON haha already drunk i see

  • Never had a problem with it,Nor did I "Trip",I did however paint a great self portrait and have written pretty good music while drinking it...I love it but, it is not for everyone.I feel clear headed and have a wonderful time with it,you have to get the right stuff.

  • we just had an abinthe session and its making my muscles spasm and shake. never again.

  • If the distiller goes nuts on the thujone content it can do that to you, it's a good reason to stay away from Czech absinthes. Thujone is a GABA antagonist, which means that it affects the neurotransmiter in charge of muscle control. Alcohol is a GABA agonist, the presence of wormwood in the drink counteracts the loose clumsy aspect of a regular drunk.

  • Awsome post

  • I saw this show a few weeks ago. I also love How It's Made on Discovery Networks.

  • absinth is legal in usa HOORAY!

  • Fine vid. I'm damn glad the tradition is being kept.

  • Absinthe is awesome ! I'm glad it's finally being sold here in the U.S. Got a bad rap because of jealous competitors. Just like many other things.

  • most of the absinthe in North America is pretty weak.

  • You misspelled "bad".

  • what?

  • What I mean is that it's not "weak" at all. It's a high proof spirit, just like the European varieties. It just so happens that most of the products that have entered the U.S. market thus far aren't very good, but that is a changin. Sirene is decent stuff and look for Leopold Bros. & Ted Breaux's Nouvelle-Orleans to hit the shelves soon.

  • fuck champagne,im gonna serve this at my wedding

  • Great!

  • Yeah, it's legal in the U.S. now...it became legal in late 2007. It tastes like licorice.

  • It is believed that much of the effect on the brain of the old absinthe was caused not by the thujone, but by the high concentration of lead in the water at the time.

  • I'm on my second bottle of Lucid and it is really good. I get that tripped out feeling after about the fourth glass but it usually puts me to sleep. TY TA Breaux, I work the graveyard and this helps a lot :)

  • ...lucid doesn't make you hallucinate. read up on the chemistry of it. it's odd.

  • What type of effect do you get with Lucid?

  • It's a very mental intoxication. Creativity and ease of concentration are enhanced and it's a very social, relaxing experience. It's not sloppy like other alcohol intoxications; it's a purely mental effect. It's the only alcohol I enjoy drinking.

  • Show of hands: Who's for re legalizing absinthe in the United States?

  • Try "Lucid" absinthe... legal in the usa.. its pretty good...

  • It is legal now. Check out St. George's Absinthe Verte from California.

  • No Green anise... No absinthe... IMO.

All I tasted was Star anise and basil. Too sweet and cloying. Not a fan. It sucks because I know Lance could make a fine product. There were no flaws in his method of craft, he just tried to do something different and the end result wasn't good. I have no doubts that if he stuck to a traditional recipe it would rival any comm. on the European market. I hope he tries again.

  • what is the best absinthe that someone can get

  • I also have a few bottles of French absinthe for sale. Including the one I used in the video but also newer, very high quality absinthe. Contact me.

  • how much are you selling it for?

  • Does it have any thujone in it?

  • That doesn't matter. You won't get high on thujone anyway.

  • I've just bought some Lucid Absinthe and I was just wondering where it ranks out?

  • I've seen a wide range of opinions on Lucid. Anywhere from "I liked it"... to "Tastes fishy". Even the people who like it concur that it's not on par with his Jade line. I think it's drinkable, but not that great personally.

  • I've just got into Absinthe, it's not only a wonderful drink, but has a fascinating and colourful history.

Anyway, you guys seem to know what you are talking about so i wondered what brands i should buy. I recently bought La Fee (Parisienne) as it seems to be the easiest to find in the uk.

I haven't watched the video cos it wont load for some reason.

  • I've only tried the brand absente of absinthe, its one of the French brands, though i don't know how its quality ranks. but the effects are amazing. your body feels drunk, though your mind is enlightened to the point of coming to greater realizations of subjects you normally talk about. I'm going to have to order a bottle of his brand and see how it compares to my experiences.

  • Absente isn't absinthe at all. This is a common misconception. No artemesia absinthium... no absinthe, period. I feel a similar lucid buzz with a good pastis or arak as I do with absinthe. Almost makes you wonder if it's the anise? I think it's a combination of several things, and honestly I don't believe thujone is one of them, despite popular belief that it is primarily, if not solely responsible.

  • This past week I had the pleasure of trying both the 1797 Roquette & Marteau. 1797... great secondfairies. I normally don't feel them much and don't like to talk about them, but WoW, I felt nice. The Marteau, in a word... Yummy! Both are excellent.

  • Never did get back to you about the 1797. Thanks for the suggestion, it is definitely an interesting drink lol.. it's a bit... "loud" for my taste, but by no means unpleasant. I'm also finally getting a preban sample (PF) and an eichelberger from mr Francis soon, so I'll have those under my belt as well.

  • Post a review once you try the preban Pernod Fils. Do you know its year? Consider yourself very LUCKY!!

  • hmmm...interesting

  • what brand of absinthe does this young man produce? i have terrible eye sight.

  • He makes one the truly best brands out there , the Jade brand , which can be purchased from places such absintheclassics on the net . Avoid the brands that toute high thujole content , this has nothing to do with quality which they claim , and in fact makes it quite crappy in flavor .

  • Typo : I meant to type "thujone" and not "thujole"

  • Yeah the thujone hype is garbage. The best secondaries I've felt were from brands with a relatively low thujone level, like Duplais & Francois Guy. The Franky Guy isn't exactly low in beta thujone, but not very high either. My theory is that it's a combination of several herbs, not any 1 by itself, and the louche causes the chemical reaction to set it into motion.

  • And of course with inferior Czech brands that rely on oils instead of real herbs, that won't louche, you won't get this reaction. This is why the only effects you feel from Czech absinth is an upset stomach and drunkness. It's funny how they hype their product as if it gives better secondaries than higher quality French/Swiss brands, yet the exact opposite is true.

  • interesting... thanks for the tips!

  • If you get the chance to purchase some, don't by any produced in the Czech Republic. Many people here in the States don't even know of the differences, they're just impressed by the exclusivity of the drink. Many Czech producers actually just add dye to produce the famous green hue rather than rely on fennel like French and Swiss manufacturers.

  • and don't forget that belgium drinks it :p

  • Good info from TA, the anchor was talking out of his ass a couple times. Van Gogh didnt drink absinthe any more than any other spirit and probably less. Saying how Ted "perfected" it. Even he would tell you hes nowhere near perfecting it, but he does have some great stuff. Couldve done without the BS talk about its "psychoactive properties", it just gets the meth spun neanderthals looking to set everything on fire and "trip ballz" into an uproar

  • its like getting stoned and drunk in a REALLY gud way! No hangovers in the morning

  • No it isn't! And if you drink enough, you most certainly can wake up with a hangover just like you can with any other high proof spirit. Please don't even bother commenting on things you have absolutely no comprehension of.

  • thats just my personal opinion and i don't go through a lot of it on a night out but why bother tellin u last i heard absinthe's illegal in the states and u poor fucks can't drink till you're 21

  • Wrong again Sparky... absinthe is NOT illegal to possess or consume in the US, just to distribute hence it can't be bought/sold in stores here. Once again, you know not what you speak of regarding this matter so just STFU before some ignorant fool takes you seriously.

  • see thats what happens ta you if ya listen to this gobshite. for ny1 who wants ta meet green fairy have at least half a bottle within 15mins!

  • Your right. But in most parts of Canada absinthe can be bought/sold in stores. so hehe lol

  • Yeah but the stuff they sell in Canada is crap, most of it is from Czech Republic. Hills seems to be the absinth of choice up there. And you can't import the good stuff into the country... so I'd much rather be in the U.S.

  • The sell La Fee at the canadian wine dealer. And customs won't stop a bottle if it's for personal use. I believe anyways.

  • I saw this show a few weeks ago. I also love How It's Made on Discovery Networks.

  • Thanks for uploading this. I'd love to try this stuff and have for a year now, and this is great education. It'll be hard, seeing I live in New Jersey.

  • there are ways of getting some of this wonderful beverage.

  • it sends you loopy for a while, kind of like doing shits of any other strong spirit but seems to give a more creative high, more so than aggresive or depressive like other spirits

  • This "creative high" notion comes from the fact that artists portrayed it in their works. It didnt make any of them creative, they were already creative. If anything Ill bet absinthe made them procrastinate on some of their pieces. Absinthe didnt make them better artists. It gives you a "lucid" buzz, thats probably the best way to describe it.

  • Very accurate & educating for anyone interested in the REAL Absinthe....I purchased a bottle of the Eduard 72 made by Jade. Outstanding!!!
