  • I prefer the Korg SV-1 because it's the closest thing to the Rhodes and

    Wurlitzer .

Good for live and for recording (^人^)

  • even from a youtube quality the difference is huge!

(the nord don't even came close to capturing the rhodes' magic)

  • Both!!

  • All samples well, but nothing can beat the real deal.

  • I used to play a Nord, but then I took an arrow in the knee.

  • The Nord is very weak in the Rhodes sound, but good enough for live use. Definitely not for studio use.

The Korg sv1 is the closest, and could be used for recording if a Rhodes can't be found.

  • nord ist a sensation, unbelivible, same and more dynamic than the original Rhodes.

  • NORD FATALLITY

  • Pretty close. For the weight difference and fragility of the original, I'd take the Nord to a live show and use the Rhodes in the studio. Same with the Hammond - I wouldn't mind the Nord on stage but the real 450 pound 1949 beast wins in the sound department. I just don't like lugging around the 450 pounds, that's all.

  • I love both these keyboards - and as a musician playing three to four gigs a week prefer the Nord Electro 3 to the Rhodes, but in the studio and for large scale performances I try to go with the real thing as much as possible. Problem is it is a back breaker, and it costs a fortune to get any repairs done on the original rhodes'. Anyways, check out the new Korg SV-1 - I am looking into it and it looks pretty awesome!

  • What is the name of the song at 1:19 ??? I cant think of it!

  • @MrBenTN would really like to get a name too!

  • @MrBenTN

the intro to that old tv show hill st blues or rhoda?

  • @vannin666 no ofcourse not :) The Rhodes creates the sound itself.... The Nord just play's a sample.

    The rhodes is Analoge.

    The Nord is Digital.

  • @thedrumbum: No, bassically a proper sound of a Rhodes or surly will start around 1k. But on ebay for about 350 bucks you get a microkorg xl with a decent wurly imitation!

  • @thedrumbum, bassically you won't find a decent one for under o

  • Thanks for the vid and well done. I can totally hear and FEEL the difference.

The real Rhodes is the BOMB...just fatter balls plain and simple. It's those funky imperfections in the tines and amp that make each key "alive". It is handmade by humans. The sound comes from actual hammers under the hood. This was a welcome trip back to reality.

  • @vannin666 Says who?

  • DAMN nord sounds sweet

  • Is almost there... very difficult to hear the difference... In a blind test I bet a lot will fail... I hear a little more clarity in the real Rhodes... but I guess with a little EQ in the nord it would be extremely difficult to tell the difference... and I bet that 99.99% of any "normal" audience will hear no difference ...

  • wow. If I was blind this would be completely boring. I would have no idea there were two pianos involved. I'm amazed how alike they sound. The nord seems like the better deal, considering a brand new Rhodes is more expensive than a brand new nord, and the nord can do more than just a Rhodes! Amazing!

  • Can anybody recommend me some cheap and analog keyboards ?

    Thank you

  • I love classic tones, I know that Rhodes is the Genesis, I love original Rhodes on older recordings, but I like the tone of Nord much more. So fresh.

  • that is incredibly close, well done nord

  • thats a mental line up

  • My roland juno di does not sound even that close to the fender rhoads.

  • Like the Floyd

  • This is impressive. I always knew Electros had a good Rhodes sound, but even head to head it stands up well. All this despite an obvious difference in your setup versus the one they sampled. Your Suitcase could use a good voicing.

  • Nord on the lowest and highest octave goes more synth-like than piano-like. The bell ring becomes a simple synth with fast attack.

And Rhodes actually has the growl on the lowest notes.

  • does anyone know of any good keyboards with a good rhodes or wurlitzer sound for under 500$

  • Anyone compare Nord to native instruments scarbee mkI?

  • Just got a Nord electro 3 61...love it!! I've have/had everything from the Korg Oasys, Motifs to Muse Receptor running Lounge Lizard and my favorite VST's. It all becomes relative when you are at a gig. I doubt if someone in the audience is going to corner you at a gig and say "that didn't sound like a REAL Rhodes". This is when your "chops" make the diffence. I took a little Korg x50 to a last minute "emergency" gig and got props for the basic Rhodes patch.. Trying to lug an Oasys out

  • Yeah the Electro overdoes, but I actually think that makes it sound better!

  • Thank you for doing the comparison......... It represents clearly, how slight the difference is in sound. For any application I could imagine someone who actually plays gigs or even does studio work I am convinced the Nord is perfect. To those who are better suited for collecting stamps, collect stamps. Know what i mean? Pzzzzzzzz

  • do you like de action of the keyboard of the electro 3??? and is similar to the rhodes action???

  • We don't care about who got cash, who got the HD camera. This test is really interesting. Sure Rhodes wins. The original is very often better than the copy.

About weight ?You want to carry a Rhodes from a place to another one, as it was during the 70's? To plav the original 70's sound ? It's your choice and at last, your money when you'll have to repair it. Wakeman got roadies to play Hammond and Steinway . Now technology offers good copies and we can choose : Wakeman didn't. That's the point

  • ma che cazzo di demo è?

  • rhodes!!! win

  • wow this is a great video. it's really incredible to hear these two instruments right next to each other like this. i can't lie, the nord does sound really amazing. i think it's a smart buy for any gigging keys player. but it does lose some of the nuance of the rhodes... for example, when that high G goes out of tune on the rhodes. i know that's an easy fix on a rhodes, but it's stuff like that that i actually LIKE about the rhodes; it's a living, breathing instrument that WILL go out of tune.

  • nord got no hammer and on a large stage surrounded by valves the digital sound of nord just fades into nothing , only my experience though.

  • The Nord always sounds as if it's going thru a compressor. It's too tidy and a bit gutless as well. O.K. it's a lot lighter than the real thing, but a blow up doll is a lot lighter than a real woman.......

  • So let's see what this kid has got...

    Nord Electro 72 ($1600)

    Actual Rhodes Mk1 ($1500)

    Apple MacBook (>$1099)

    HD Camera (>$200)

And he probably has even more..

    Seriously?

  • It's no Rhodes.... I think in the bass it's really close, and the highest octavs are also OK, but the Nord sounds more "hollow", and the Rhodes more fluffy.

  • damn that's a sweet riff at 1:20, what is that from?

  • @octohelpme

It's called "Angela (Theme from 'Taxi')" from the album, "Touchdown" written/performed by Bob James.

  • Pretty close. The thing is, what variation of sounds can the Rhodes do that the Nord can't? This is just one example. This kid's lucky. I wish I had both those keyboards to mess around with.

  • yup this kid got cash, advice to kid: SAVE ALL OF YOUR INSTRUMENTS -- NEVER SELL THEM FOR RENT NO MATTER WHAT then you'll have an assload of gear when you're 40...

  • first of all your rhodes has tuning issues and of course damper kiss. the nord sounds great, no unintentional detuning, a LOT lighter to carry around and looks stunning.

  • So this kid who looks like he's 13 has a Rhodes and a Nord. Wtf?

  • Sheep!

  • Not a good test. Those Rhodes need to be gone over by a good tech first. Most techs don't have clue! You have damper kiss, tuning problems, voicing concerns etc.

  • nuooooossa, great child!

massa ver que pelo menos ele ta gastando a grana com coisas boas!

    nice dupla ein!

  • When you did the "run" at 1:55 I was pretty confident that the Rhodes was the one that was out of tune, heh:) A better challenge for the Nord would be to do a comparison with the A200, I'm not crazy about that sample. And I own a A200, maybe that's why!

  • I have lugged a Rhodes to gigs in the past (because I had to), but no more! I have come to rely on a keyboard with more than one basic sound; the Electro 3! There are 4 Rhodes' in there! ...plus using EQ, FX, Amp/sims, reverb, etc. can't get you there? Your ears are way pickier than the audience's (and they couldn't care less), plus you have a bunch of other sounds too! Adapt and improvise!

  • Thanks for the test man, this was exactly what I was looking for!

You can clearly hear that the rhodes is more open and "smokey" sounding, especially in the lower registers, and probably handles heavy action better (the nord tends to be too dynamic and can easily clip the soundcard without a compressor on the way in, I find). I've noticed artifacts when eq:ing and using amp simulation ITB on nord 2 also. But overall, it's a pretty good sim.

  • Thing is, it sounds ok played soft but hit a real rhodes hard and it is gut wrenching, hit a nord hard and it just does nothing. I have had 3 rhodes over the years, the touch on the nord is also way off the mark, it is a sloppy action.

Check out "Menage A Trios" by the Yellow Jackets to hear how a real Dyno Rhodes sounds, tine slam and everything!

  • suprisingly nord electro sounds very pleasant. especially on the higher registers. the lower octaves sound a quite too synthetic to my ears. however it's just a YT quality so we can't hear everything. and obviously i would take the original one any day:)

  • i would have thought a bit of work with the equaliser and so on would be able to get is a bit more similar? either way, its still the best replication i've ever heard

  • sounds great, probably second to none, but yes kind of 'overdoes' it , couldn't have said better. thanks and keep playing

  • The Taxi theme yay :D

  • jesus, someone has some money lol a macbook, nord electro and a rhodes. anyway great video mate!

  • Rhodes Mark I sounds better. Nord's pretty artificial on some notes (I don´t know much music theory to say it more properly, it's only by ear)

  • Man, I'd love to have both of them

  • @shydmples I've love to have just one of the two haha

  • @lebocharp lol...I hear you on that one....I won't be THAT greedy...well...maybe I'll think about that...lol...I would love to have both of those...awesome sounds...lol

  • get this fu*** nord down from the holy rhodes!!!

  • Notice how the keys, when released, bounce repeatedly on the Rhodes. A sluggish, rubbery feel. When it comes to playing "piano" music well--which includes all the dynamic-sensitive key instruments: piano, electric piano, and clavinet--the importance of a responsive "action" is important, NOT just the sound. A real clavinet, even a Hammond and most synth keyboards have a much quicker key rebound, less fatiguing. The Rhodes is a pain to play.

  • sound really close to me I would say the main difference would be the touch and feel of the person playing it .The real rhodes sounded a little duller but thats because its suppose to it's analog. And analog usually has more soulful sound

  • Good comparison.

For me it's simple... the Rhodes is way better. The Nord sounds overdone and flat.

  • How else can you put it into words... the Rhodes has a soul, the Nord doesn't! Nord is still a pretty sick piece of gear, it's an ultimate gigging tool. I don't carry my massive Fender Twin to every gig, sometimes my little solid state Fender amp can cut it. Same deal, no soul, but same sound! How else to do explain it!

  • 2:05 tune it, please omg

  • you guys should calm down about this kid having money. He obviously isn't poor, but these things aren't that expensive, especially when compared to reed or brass instruments. mark ones are on craigslist in the $600 range routinely, and the nord electro 3 is what, like $1100?. Stop acting like hes a fucking millionare, you assholes.

  • @apc2112 I'd much rather have a 600 dollar rhodes than a 1100 dollar electro 3,lol

  • @apc2112 actually nord electro 3 is about 2200 and thats now at least where i live but yeah not ridiculously expensive

  • @apc2112 1100 for the electro 3? NO

600 for an mk I? NO more like 1200 for the rhodes and 1800 for a electro 3

  • One thing the Electro can't do is stage presence. It's ugly and small. A Rhodes or Hammond is big and beautiful. So big, it takes a whole truck just to move the keyboard player's rig. So beautiful, that when you snap a key off the Hammond while loading it on to the truck, you almost cry like baby in the parking lot of the dive bar you just played in. They look so cool on stage, though, and as good as the digi stuff sounds, the real deal is better, every time.

  • This kid got good taste man!

  • lets face it the nord does what its supposed to do fit in a gigbag to make it easy to play for drunks who cant tell the difference that and give amateurs like me an affordable way to gig wurly, rhodes and hammond.

  • in terms of expense its about 7000 fior a rhodes which has an amazing tone but the nord costs bowt 4500 for multi emulation. Obviously not gonna be as good as the original but for us broke asses paying 4500 and getting a hammond, clav, rhodes, piano, and extras is definitly the way to go. just bought an electro 3 the other day and it's definitly my favourite keyboard at da mo.

  • I bet with better settings on the Nord, you could have made it sound a heckuva lot closer

  • Very nice sound ! My favourite among 70's tracks

  • Dynamic response seems to change from middle C and half way down on the Clavia; otherwise sounds pretty much identical.

  • the dynamic response seems to differ somehow, in particular for the harder keystroke. Or is it just some kind of overdrive effect at the clavia?

  • bob james!!!

  • nord sounds good, i did a "blind" test on myself (or tried to). I can tell the difference everytime, but I wouldn't say that the nord sounds artificial; at the very least not excessively so.

  • The nord doesn't sound as authentic to me as the real one. Anyways, the nord keeps some other interesting sounds in it like B3, Pianos, Clavs.. plus it weights about nothing compared to a real Rhodes. And I guess you could boost the nord's sound compared to the real thing by doing some EQ:ing to make it sort of dirtyer and not so bright.

  • I don't think there is much between them.

  • rhodes defo sounds better, and feals better i guess, nord still sounds good though

  • I like the Pink Floyd line you threw in there.

  • im a little biased towards electromechanical and analog gear (despite only owning digital stuff myself), i think the the high notes of the rhodes sound a bit stronger, while one of the low notes on the nord is a little exagerated. both are good tho really.

  • The Nord's sample is very good, but it misses the metal in the real rhodes. It's a lot dryer. There's no tine in the Nord. I find Korg SV-1's sound better for that, although I don't have any rhodes vs. korg SV-1 videos to test my theory.

  • some EQing would get these closer in tone...

but hey, record with the rhodes, travel with the nord.

  • add some EQ to the Nord; less low, more high

  • nord vs. rhodes = "dougie houser" to "do me now, sir!"

  • Nord looses..

  • the nord electro sounds better !! (:

but .. i guess.. the rhodes feels better;)

    btw. nice video!

  • Rhodes sounds better for me.. more realistic; I`m not a Nord fan at all.

  • Try lowering the higher frequencies on the synth a little.

  • what's the one at 1:19 ?

  • Hi Mat How old is the Rhodes?

  • i can demo a Rhodes with a MIDI out goin to any Keyboard with a MIDI in, and boom same sounds!

  • thanks.. good video

  • Rhodes wins

  • This is a pretty good video. It does a great comparison between the rhodes and the clavia nord. It's a shame both instruments are very expensive as I wouldn't mind having either one, and I don't even know how to play it.

  • Nice...sheep.

  • Gimme your gear...

  • ok umm well i play the keyboard and i want to no how to play this part 1.20 is when that part starts post a video on how to do that bit plz

  • oh man, i was so happy with my nord, now i know it stinks

  • The electro is not a good rhodes sound. Play it hard, and you will know what I mean.

Before you debate this, either play a real rhodes or get a sample/real thing of the Scarbee rhodes sound.

  • Maaaacs and dwgunboy are both right. The Electro is literally sampled from the same type of keyboard that he's playing, it's just that he's either not using the right setting on the Electro/Rhodes, or that he isn't used to the different feelings between the keyboards and is unintentionally playing at different velocities or dynamics.

Good video, nonetheless. I'm glad I got an Electro 3

  • This kid got cash

  • @FreedomBeats ye he's easily got 4 grand of equipment there

  • @FreedomBeats Or parents with cash :D

  • @FreedomBeats I know! That trampoline is AWESOME!

  • @FreedomBeats and talent..

  • Il suono è lo stesso, essendo campionato,,, la differenza sta nella dinamica delle due tastiere...

The sound is the same, being sampled... the difference is the dynamic of the two keyboards...

  • @dwgunboy

remember ne is a virtual simulation . hammers on MK plays a different sound and feelings .original is better by far .ciao

  • Do you use the sound "Mk I Deep" or "Mk I Ideal" on your Electro 3 ?

  • nice instruments. now you just have to learn how to play

  • @WerhattedenLachs hahahahah

  • Very nice job. Thanks for posting.

  • Excellent demonstration. Big different me. Thanks.

  • All very well, in the abstract. I wonder how many here have had to gig regularly with a Rhodes. Or a Hammond. Or both. A Stage 73 weighs in at 120 lbs. A 'B' without pedals, around 400. Oh, and there's always the issue of transporting these pieces from show to show.

It's amazing how forgiving one's ears become when a Rhodes, Wurlie, Clavinet, B, CP80, etc. become available in a sub-20 lb. packaged. Oh, and did I mention zero maintenance?

  • Hodaddy1000 to your comment about how many have had to gig with a Rhodes...my Father actually bought one for me and we have a gig coming up here locally. I am thinking of using it on stage..very likely im actually heading to my studio tonight to experiment with amps and pedals..Oh the sound of a Hammond and Leslie too. :)

Going to experiment with my new present. (in good shape sounds great) as video, good video overall.

  • I hope you enjoy yer Rhodes. I still have a suitcase 88, but it needs rebuilding.

I've been actively gigging for over 30 years, FWIW. I played last night using my electro 2, punched in my favorite Rhodes, and was in absolute hog heaven. It's made my life immeasurably easier. No more van, excruciating load ins, or broken tines...

  • @hodaddy1000 I have an RD 700SX and I prefer carring my rhodes or my clavinet to concerts. At the end you have +/- the same weight, but the RD doesn't give me the same feeling, the same touch and the same natural feeling...

  • @hodaddy1000 I've gigged with a player who uses them and its no problem if you don't want to sound like a noob with a digi keyboard

  • It´s the famous 90%. Good enough for you? :)

  • awesome! they both sound great to me ..maybe its just cos i love angela so much, its the perfect tune to demonstrate how great the rhodes vibe is

  • Angela, Theme from 'Taxi' .. right? great comparison!

at 1:14 it sounds almost the same.... no doubt digital has a long way to reach analog!

  • thanks for the comparison!

  • Digital never reaches Analog..

  • pretty close mid range you can tell a bit but live or studio no one would know unless they have a rhodes and really play I use the motif range by yamaha plus I do have a rhodes 73 with the pedal in the speaker I think the motif suit case is better but I do like your video take care man danny

  • Hummm. I wonder if the Nord would sound more mellow like the Rhoads if you were to cut down on the highs on the mix or on the amp to take a little of of the bite out of the sound we are hearing. This is a great demonstration idea. Thanks!

  • I love the taxi theme!

  • Are you using Grado or Alessandro headphones? I'm pretty sure you are, anyways nice taste in headphones and nice playing.

  • Bothe the NE3 and the Rhodes are almost identical in sound in the mid to upper registers, but the rhodes has a mellower sound in the lower and bass. This is probably due to the rhodes that was used for the Nord samples. The real rhodes has more fundimentals and the Nord has a little more overtones.

  • I definately prefer the rhodes sound, but the easy transportation of the nord make both of these instruments something worth saving for. Nice vid!

  • Thanks a lot!

    Nice Video, nice purpose!

  • very very much the same. good enough for most purposes i could think of..could probably make the nord even closer with some effects pedals. little reverb, tiny amount of delay. i'm going to try to get a nord sometime soon.

  • real & toy

  • The original rhodes is alot smoother.

  • yeah, more mellow kinda sound

  • Please !!! could you make a Vox emulation demo video ?????

  • I find the rhodes' sond deeper as the Electro3

  • i think that nord has less power than the rhodes cause it's a desk keyboards and has more sounds in it but the emulation is great

  • Many thanks for this video. I've gone through all the software Rhodes - Scarbee, Native Instruments, Lounge Lizard and Co., and the most satisfying is a cheap sample set from Precision Sound called Dusty Electric. The rest just don't live. Had the DX7...ever played a digital guitar? eee...recently played a real Rhodes Suitcase - Game Over. I had 2 Rhodes and 2 Wurlies in the 70's/80's. For home/studio use, only a real Rhodes. Just got a Hohner Pianet T- small, toyish but it got de Mojo!

  • Good comparison. I think there's more difference between two real Rhodes than between the NE3 and Rhodes. I can hear the detail better in the NE3 which could be about the age of a Rhodes and/or the age of the pickups. Mk1 are a little deeper anyway. Remember that by the time it comes out of speakers in a live environment a difference this small is negligible.

  • closest thing ive heard to a rhodes in a long time

  • I think its about action.... the sounds are very alike, its the action that make amplify the differences lol

The lower ends ----> higher ends

I dont own either of the keyboard but I guess that the nord keys aren't really weighted in contrary with the rhodes'

  • Merci pour la comparaison,excellent!

  • The NE3 sounds a little more wurly-like in the bass section.

  • quick question,i was wondering how many keys are there in each of them?

  • There are 61 and 73 key versions available from Nord Electro III

  • Every rhodes piano you touch is going to have unique characteristics. I have 3 rhodes pianos and a nord electro 2 - i love them all, but i never play the electro's rhodes live. The B3 is amazing, tho.

Maybe the most important factor that you will never be able to note on video is touch or action. The action of a rhodes is very important to the sound one can get out of it.

The nord emulates the rhodes sound plain and simple. An emulation will never be the real thing.

  • very true but from a gig point of view the nord wins as it's a fraction of the size and wieght

  • The rhodes is so much more real

  • Pretty close, a little more treble-y in the mids, but pretty close

  • Great movie and good job! :) Nord sound almost like original, but tke low keys ar softer in original. Regards!

  • sounds like the theyre almost the same in the upper registeres, but the the rhodes is fatter in the lower part of the keyboards.. nice

  • I think high notes sound almost the same each other but earing to low ones I prefer rodhes.

  • What amp is your rhodes connected to

  • FALTA FEELING

  • ESta solo comparando no tratando de impresionar.

  • I know which I'd rather lug to a gig.

  • The rhodes does sound better ... But ... I wonder how the Electro would sound through a fender amp with the low frequencies cranked up. That MUST give a deep warm sound wouldn't it?

  • two beatiful instrument ;)

  • does there need be comparison? the rhodes created that sound, it's like comparing an online image of starry night to the original painting.

  • thanks so much - great comparison... very good video. the chords at the beginning most clearly highlight the difference to me. The rhodes is a bit 'deeper' and warmer'. I'd *love* to have the electro tho :) hell, i'll take both :)
