@686204 I could be missing something here, but there was no draft for Iraq and Afghanistan, so nobody has to go to jail for not fighting unless they've already enlisted. Anyway. you are correct, sir, about the CSA's draft. it was enacted April 16, 1862, but withdrawn in December of '63 for being unconstitutional and against the very freedoms and causes that the CSA and Constitution stood for. To say that everyone fought due to being drafted is just silly. A good discussion otherwise.

To my knowledge the Confederacy draft system was still in effect up until 1864 when they expanded it to included men up to the age of 50 from 45. In 1863 the practice of allowing a rich drafted man to hire a substitute was abolished and some exemptions were made for those that owned slaves but it still remained in effect according to my info

No one was taxed "75%". It was a tariff on imported goods aimed at protecting DOMESTIC farmers. Know what that means genius? That means foreign goods were more expensive in order to increase demand of domestic goods. Southerns got mad because they wanted to by foreign goods that were now more expensive. Basic econ, dumb ass.

#1 The amount of blacks who fought for the CSA is in the dozens, compared to the 200,000 that served under the Union.
#2 Those "black slave owners" were free blacks who purchased family members, not to mention that for census data black assistants were counted as "slave owners" when their masters were away, plus any owner who had any fraction of black in them was considered black.
#3 the black diaspora was OVERWHELMINGLY Northward.

Actually, one last point. Blacks were not allowed to fight for the CSA until 1865, when the Southern army was decimated by losses and desertions. It wasnt until then that the Confederates got any blacks to enlist based on promises of allowing them their freedom.

sorry war was not over slavery. slavery did not even come into the war until 1863 to get the support of the abolitionist movement it was about lincoln wanting to preserve the union (for some reason) states rights was what it was about cause the states make up the government not the other way around and plus only 6% of the south owned slaves and 5 slave states stayed in the union so what you propose first of all makes no sense sorry to break the facts in i know you yanks hate that

this is a good story but you should really look at history it was never about slavery.Lincoln said he wanted white free labor and send the Negros back to Africa .Lincoln passed a law in Illinois that bared free blacks from the state.slavery was never the issue states rights were.most Northerners could give a rats ass about slavery. they hated blacks more than southerns just look at the nyc riot of 1862 .they hung every black they could get their hands on.
