Oh, they did all right. They did not walk about bare-fet, of course.

The point is that during those days (1956-57) "Made in Japan" (JAPANi) meant poor INFERIOR (hard or even impossible to believe these days) products !! In the film Raj has his simple, canvass (and not very high quality) shoes all torn and in shambles. Hence the term Japanī.
