It seems some heavy metal bands have become heavier overtime. Early Judas Priest to some of their later albums like Painkiller. Metallica seemed to take the opposite direction, with St. Anger being a combination of both tension and release.

Also as Lars once said "You have to try some different stuff, playing the same stuff over and over again will get old and stale." They took a new direction for creativity and to expand. And they still got some great songs out of it. King Nothing, Fuel, Devils Dance ,Memory Remains
