  • The Soviets were less than thrilled with the Spitfire. Beyond the fact it was too delicate for the operation profile of VVS frontal aviation, it's low altitude performance wasn't too remarkable anyway. Plus Churchill made sure they were only second-hand older marks the RAF didn't want anymore because they were outclassed by the latest German developments.

They were however much more appreciated by the PVO air defence forces.

  • @truekiwijoker " all of the above (i made this vid)

  • Эти Спитфайры использовались ограниченно. Их отправили в войска ПВО, как и Тандерболт. Воздушные бои на востоке сильно отличались от боев на западе.

  • Awesome, I want to build ''White 538'', have the MPD decals for it but doesn't come with the thunderbolt marking, what decals did you use?

  • @lape2002 Cheers! I didn't have the thunderbolt/arrow on my decals either, I just masked it off with tamiya tape... very carefully! (Gerbil is new account). The cannons were scratch built too.

    Dave.

  • AWESOME! I love the weathering, and the guards marking on the fin looks wikkid too!

  • Thnks!

  • Pretty nice. the weathering do capture the wear and tear the Russian Spitfires got. Very nice.. Wish I was as good as you to make planes :)

I read that you use the Tamiya weathering kit... Is it a good one? I am planning on getting one...

Now, let me browse your other videos :)

  • Very interesting. Beautiful model.

I didn´t know that the Russians had British Spitfires.

  • Thanks.

There were few planes the Russians didn't have (they even used some FW 190D's from a factory they overrun ) ;)

  • Well the Germans used a lot of captured weapons throughout the war themselves. The Ppsh41 submachine gun was the 3rd most common weapon in the Germany army on the eastern front. T34 tanks were captured and used by the Germans. Even some captured B17 and B24 bombers were in German use.

  • @McLarenMercedes Yeah, take whatever you can get your hands on! The Ppsh was a copy of a Finnish gun if I recall correctly.

  • @hoffmann9471 about 3000 hurricanes and 1300 spitfires reached the USSR. They were mostly ex RAF machines that had been refurbished. Britain had an extensive rebuilding program for worn out and damaged aircraft. Possible because damaged aircraft that returned were never to far from British factories. Of the approx 14000 Hurricanes built approx 7000 were rebuilt to as new standard. Of the approx 22,000 Spitfires approx 3500 were rebuilt. The same happened with Lancaster and Halifax bombers

  • good photos and very detailed painting, exelent skill.

  • Thanks, i owe a lot to the tamiya weathering kit I bought ;)

  • I LIKE THIS

  • Thanks

  • nice us brits (im british) also sent hawker hurricanes to the Soviets to.

  • Ah yes, I won't forget to make a soviet hurricane when I find a decent kit ;)

  • They used them in Finland (not that it helped much, cos Russia got there butt kicked in round 2 as well)

  • yes and they used german JUNKERS planes too

  • Actually Finland was forced to make peace with them in 1944. They could keep almost all Finland on the condition all the German forces were thrown out of Finland by the Finns themselves. This the Finns did. They kept their end of the bargain as did the Soviets. The alternative was an invasion like that happened in Eastern Europe.

My great grandfather fought in the Finnish WInter War.

  • @McLarenMercedes I bet the Finns were extremely grateful not to be overrun like the rest of Europe :)

  • Once again, great job.

    You are an artist.

  • Thanks! I have a dutch one on the way, just waiting for paint to dry so i can varnish it ;)

Are you the guy who likes p-39s?

  • Yes sir,

BTW, I have figure sawn a Fokker G-1 Model 1:48.

All I need to do now is paint it.

    I'll post a video when I'm done...

  • figure saw? Is that like carving, was it difficult? Anyway that sounds like a very good video on the way, I love Fokkers especially the G.1 ;)

  • I don't know the English word for figure saw...

With this you can saw wood (4mm) in a very detailed way.

    I make 3D profile models..

The G-1 is my third model.

    The 1st was a Hawker Tempest, 2nd was a Henschel P.75

  • Oh please include the other two in the video! (what country do you live in?)

  • Will do.

I'm dutch... I live in Holland (the Netherlands)

  • Ganz toller film. Ich mag die modellflugzeuge sehr!

  • Danke schon mein kamerade!

  • you are welcome!

  • I was going to say mein spanielmacher but not sure if that is correct German?

  • well unusualt term but one can understand it. Züchter is the term. I am a woman. my uncle was a ww2 bomber pilot.

  • Oh wow! Do you know what kind of Bomber? Did he survive the war?

  • stuka. yes he survived. he was a smith, iron smith.

  • Wow even more, I think stukas became quite vulnerable to attack at the end of the war. It must take a strong stomach to dive a plane like that!

  • that man was iron. he was a smith. he did not think much. he died a couple of years ago. he did not question the stystem. he just did as he was told.

  • very good model and video!!!

I wish I had time and skill to make it like you.

    Many regads

  • Thanks, I don't really have much time I just spend months doing one plane (I could do it faster if I wasn't so lazy). Then occasionally I have a burst of enthusiasm (quite rare) ;)

What make is your Brequet bomber?

  • Excellent !!! The sense of high speed motion and active aerobatics you achieved is superb. What's more, I never knew the USSR flew Spitfires. Very good video (and model building), all the way around !!!

  • Thanks ;) I have a Dutch one almost finished now, video to come this week...

  • Noice! :)

  • well done,it seems you are interesting just for WWII planes right?mostly russian air force I guess..

  • No, far from it. I have a jet in my pile and my fascination extends to all airforces about the world ;)

  • another great build!

  • cheers!

  • superb!

  • danke!

  • Hey Dave I love what you did with the underside - that weathering is terrific!

  • Thank you, I bought one of those tamiya weathering kits (it comes in 3 colours mud/sand/light sand) very handy!

  • I will try and get my hands on one of those or something similar.. :)

  • It's good for kits with raised panel lines (i.e. any airfix) ;)

  • I have seen something similar on Hannants, maybe SBX can get me some when I come back from Sweden.. :)

  • A the joy of SBX...

  • Much drooling going on over here.. My son won't be happy when he comes home and finds his laptop all wet.. :) Excellent, I must say.. and I loved that final picture of it flying, guns ablaze.. :)

  • I'm glad that worked as well as it did ;) I cut some holes in the exhaust (and had to plasticard over one set I dug out) but the camera just would not focus in such a small area :(

I'm hoping to finnish that dutch spit today, also going to attack the wildcat ;)

  • I don't know if your camera 'crops' the photos already in the camera?? If so, take the photo(s) in a reasoably high setting, and crop them.. this will magnify them, but still keep them sharp.. That's what I do! Failing that, there's plenty of programmes out there that will crop the photos for you, on the computer.. :) But the key is to use a high megapixel setting to start with, and a sharp photo but from a bit of a distance, so you have something to work with! Just an idea.. :)

  • nah, it's high detail but the camera has to be held very still when you zoom in on things and keeps focusing on different bits intsead of what you want it to ;(

  • small tripod and use the camera timer? :)

  • Ok ThERE REALLY IS NO SOLUTION, my camera is big and is very picky about what it focuses on, some things are just a bit small.

  • Fine, fine.. "backs off in horror and runs to hide under the hydrangea, trembling.."

  • No I'm sorry I\ didn't mean to be blunt, I was just trying to articulate how the camera focus is essentially incurable. But T.Hanks for the suggestions, as usual ;)

You have hydrangea too? Mines very dead at the moment, which is odd considering the season...

  • Mine's only half dead.. it should have been cut back ages ago.. I had planned to do it today.. but tomorrow will do.. :) I don't think they did very well last summer..

  • 'The Lone Hydrangea'? Apparently it's gonna get super hot tommorrow...

  • Ouch.. me no like.. and I have to work in the kitchen tonight.. I prefer to work in the fridges in the summer.. :P

  • Drool - once again - thankyou.

  • I've nearly finished another ;p (I'm on a roll)

  • I've heard about that.. finishing models!! I have to try that too some time!! Will work on my 1/48 'Pegasus Snap-Together' Hurricane tonight, I think.. :) Amongst other things.. :)

  • you are able to do snap-together models! alas I have failed with that as well. I have learned that I shall just be teaching model assembly - rule is if you can't do it - teach it lol :)

  • Ha ha.. Yes.. Snap-together does need a bit of work as well.. that Hurricane has taken a fair amount of filler, but hopefully I can sand it down tonight and continue.. :):)

  • What mk. of hurricane?

  • Mk. I.. but slightly different in colour to normal, when done.. :)

  • wow, extreme detail....even prop face detail

  • Thanks I tried to cut the exhaust open a little to make them see like real pipes, but the camera wouldn't focus on it :(

  • Nice you really got talent xD

  • Cheers ;) xD

  • Nice detailing on the engine. It looks very fast indeed.

  • Thanks and much corn to you, I 'hope' to finish my dutch spitfire by the end of the weekend
