I picked up an MF-8104 to try this, but it may be a newer version. The Main Menu looks a little different, and when I scroll past "Settings" and then back with the keyboard, and then click "Settings" with the mouse, I don't get to the CE desktop.
The "autorun" method doesn't work either. (At this CE level you don't use a "CE" folder in the root of the card - I found that out and did it per instructions.)
What I'm wondering, though, is couldn't one just set up a Windows CE file explorer (eg, GSFinder) as an autorun file on a memory card (ie, rename it to autorun.exe and place it inside a folder named "CE" in a subfolder with the processor class name) and insert that into the card slot to navigate the file system?
Doesn't seem to work on the U-50132. Neither the mouse nor the keyboard appear to be recognized, either through the hub or connected directly to the device's USB port. I thought maybe I could browse the files inside the device if I connected it to my PC through the device's USB client port, but Windows XP only recognizes the device as a mass storage drive, and I can only browse the image files. (And XP identifies it as "MF-1041.")
BTW, other Windows CE devices with USB mass storage support also recognize the U-50132 as a "USB Disk" and I can also browse the image files there as well.
Well, I'm a big CE fan (core OS, not the stupid Windows Mobile interface), and I just picked up a U-50132, so we'll see if that one has the same underlying OS. The ARM processor is an advantage (as opposed to the AMD PIC's x86).
I never made a page for it because I was too lazy and no longer have this picture frame. I played around with coding some WinCE stuff but it got boring fast (I'm not a fan of WinCE or WinMo at all).
I'm not sure about the registry key, you might be right but again I can't check because I don't have this thing anymore.
BTW, which Digital Spectrum model is this? I don't see discussion of this specific hack on your site (though it's nice to see more discussion of the AMD PIC, which has also had some coverage on HPC:Factor).
I assume that registry value for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/init/Launch50 is something other than "explorer.exe" (I assume it's instead whatever the image viewer application executable is), in which case you could bypass the proprietary image viewer application and boot directly into the CE 5 desktop by changing the value to "explorer.exe."
Another question, though, is whether the device has a persistent registry, like many CE 5 devices.
I have the same picture frame. Plug a mouse into the USB port and click around; it will eventually crash the picture frame program and bring you to the Windows CE desktop. What I really want to do is figure out how to install Linux on it. Then it could do other stuff... like maybe running Folding@Home or cracking wireless encryption keys. Anyway, what I did notice is that it has a rudimentary web server on it; just go to its IP in another computer's internet browser.
make a bootable flash card and u should be able to make it boot from it like a bootable usb or bootable sd or xd or mms or what ever this rame uses same with xp and osx x86
Sorry, can't now. I will try tomorrow. It seems that the new version of the software makes it harder to crash the embedded picture frame software, though. Once I get Linux running on it that won't matter though.
I will post its specs too, I found detailed processor/RAM/partition info somewhere.
This could possibly be cool to get Linux on.
Anyway, it seems to be running a "neutered" version of Windows CE. I don't know what the main board is, I think it's a good idea to take it apart to find out (some boards have well-documented boot processes)
hey dude lets turn this into a project but the problem is i cant find these were i live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 >:( they had em one for 80$ but now there gone can u get me one :D then we can prot arm linux to it and take over btw tell me the vram and ram and total onboard storage
k so wait so the if i can thing to the llinux kernel to geting the ram and onboard torage or geting me one o we can mkae this int oa progect as i have a idea if it web enabled... a little app thats poling a website and displaying it >:)
Any ideas on hope to fix a mf1041? The screen blacked out but if you tilt the screen it actually still works .

I'm going to buy one with WiFi and USB and try to install an embedded Linux OS - that'd be cool!

how do you get the testAPP

@adamxp12
I coded it myself in VB.net or C# (I can't remember). Target CPU is ARM. It doesn't do anything but show you a dialogbox as you can see in the video.

@535stimuli you have to do a lot of clicking around with the new version. Just try mashing buttons and it will eventually work.

Did You Have To Press A Specfic Button Or Something To Get It To Do That

The model is "Digital Spectrum MF-8104"

Ok, I think I may have to custom compile a kernel to run on ARM though. I checked the processor in mine and it's definitely ARM.

Will sometime this week. I don't know anything about the bootloader on this device but will try to get a linux distro running.
