  • Of course Wilde was treated appallingly and unjustly. However, my issue with him is that he carelessly betrayed and publicly humilated his wife and children. He was a genius, a humantarian, and a flawed man- not flawed because of his sexuality, but because of his apparent ambivalence towards his family as a result of his actions.

  • @joesoap81 One in the rectum won't affect 'em- Oscar Wilde 1890

  • @YoungMaleJoshua He was charged with having sex with a male in general, and when they met Bosie was 21. Hardly a boy by todays standards, I don't think anyone here who supports this speech would condemn a consensual relationship where the youngest person was still over the age of consent.

  • It is the most stupid thing anyone can say at that moment- when someone wants your head for being a fairy- not that there is anything wrong with that- and they ask you "What is the love that dares not speak its name?" You do not make a long speech on how being gay is intellectual, beautiful, natural, &c. It may be beautiful, intellectual, natural, &c., but, when you are defending yourself against charges of being gay, you do not make a speech on how great being gay is.

  • @jiahua448 Perhaps he felt that if he denied it at this point, he would lose his own soul to the lie.

Nothing can be more painful that to be dragged into court for loving. What we love expresses what we are more deeply than anything. So to deny your love is to deny yourself. That may well be more dangerous, and have worse consequences, than two years in prison and a lost reputation. I think an artist and sensitive spirit like Oscar Wilde would have known this instinctively.

  • I'm your straight, female, 30 something, bank exec. I'm married and have 2 wonderful boys. I am also an LGBT (Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual, Transsexuals) Rights Advocate and an admirer of Wilde's literature. I studied History and found Alexander the Great and Hepaestion, Emperor Hadrian and Antinous. We have stories like Achilles and Petroclus. There are artists like George Michael, Adam Lambert, and Freddie Mercury of Queen. I don't think I need to explain myself why I'm into LGBT's.

  • It's the actual speech that Wilde made in court, a matter of public record. Wonderful speech, but worked against him in the end, poor man.
