I started listening to Don Ellis in 1965. Being a drummer I was blown away by all the odd time stuff he did. I wrote parts out and tried to understand all of it. Tears of Joy is one of my favorite LP's of my entire life. And yes - Bulgarian Bulge is one of my favorite cuts. I have two different versions of it. The one on Tears of Joy is incredible.
@Moog167 I've do 11/8 quite often (4+3+4); that thrice makes 33. It can mosty easily be rhythmed like (4th 4th + 4th 8th + 4th 4th) or (long, long + long short - long long). Another way could be doing 5/8 + 6/8 but changing each beat into a triole of 16ths.
I still have my mint pressing of this Columbia LP. Fortunately I bought an extra copy because I wore this track out. Whoever the trumpet player is--he does Ellis proud!!
Yeah!

The trumpeter is Thomas Gansch, formerly of the Vieanna Art Orchestra. Yes, somewhere Don is smiling. These guys cook.

Incredible. My dad was a big Ellis fan and Indian Lady is one of my favorite all time numbers.
These guys do it proud.
