Read the Car and Driver test. They were able to stop all of the vehicles they tested using the brakes. Including that Lexus. They even stopped a Mustang Shelby Cobra, which is a 550 hp car. The guy panicked and was not thinking clearly. Everyone should take the time to sit in their car and run through a drill on what to do. In combat, soldiers often credit their training taking over. If you have planned out your actions in advance you have a better chance to avoid tragedy.

@excalibur8600 Just turning the engine off can make it difficult to steer the car, it would have been better to put it in neutral. However, a lot of people's reactions would have been the same - confusion, step on the brakes, panic when the brakes don't stop the car, etc.
Might have been different with a manual transmission as the use of the gearbox to slow down the car is a more natural manoeuvre for a manual driver, but still.
What makes this accident most tragic. is that unlike most accidents wich are caused by dangerous driveng, Driver error, speeding or alcohol. THis was caused by the incompitance of the driver to deal with the cituation and people had to die because of it.
