Marco is not a death metal drummer, he does a lot of jazz fusion and other alternative drum projects he was simply just filling in.

Their songs are not majorly blast beats. Marco has a fucking huge variety of unique styles. He uses all sorts of techniques which include polyrhythm, and all that shit. And Marco does not throw in random shit, all of his so-called "random shit" has PATTERNS.
Anyway, each one of these guys are fucking gods in the flesh.
i didn't hear of marco minnemann until about 6months ago. now i can't get enough. this guy has changed the way i use my kit. all i can say is wow. marco is a true genius.

Necrophagist is very technical. I very much enjoy the harmonies and overlapping guitar. The bass is also extemely good, though there are better I know.
Not very good at making a cohesive song. They just throw in random wankery to appear technical. There's nothing that's really that technical about the music besides the Guitar.
You've got to be joking. The bass is extremely technicaly, like in the song Only Ash Remains where he has his little intro, and the drumming is extremely technical and stays in time with all the guitars time changes while doing so.
Are you familiar with George Kollias? And it's not like Marco blasts a lot for Necrophagist. Generally I just hear a quick spurt of it once in a while.
I know about Kollias. He's fast, but I'd love to see him show his groovy side like Roddy has recently. Roddy gave up being a speed freak because there, quite frankly, aren't that many musical applications for it.
I'm not talking about speed with Kollias and Minneman. I just see their technicality when drumming. A lot of bands I've seen and heard stay on certain pieces of the set unfortunately. Minneman and Kollias are my two favourite drummers because of how technically advanced they are.
They can be if you combine a blast with something else. Many drummers out there can't even blast beat though. Marco is just genuinely an amazing drummer.
The fact of the matter is, I do not consider myself a drummer at all, I just do it in my spare time. Anyone with any musical knowledge can see that Marco Minneman is an amazing drummer. I'm not gonna dispute your reflections on drumming, cause frankly it's a matter of what you personally think, and I respect that, because I'm assuming you play drums.
I personally see technicality in comparing this genre of music to others that I have heard. Compare the drumming of most shit Hardcore band drummers with Marco and there is a clear spectrum on drumming ability. Personally I think Marco and George Kollias are two of my favourite drummers, because of their abilities.
therisen77: That depends on a point of view. Playing fast is all about good technique. Without a good technique you simply can't play fast. And blast beats are always very fast. Therefore everything a good blast is, is superb hands technique.
So from a certain point of view, blasts are very technical!
And finger control is a technique - and definatelly not an easy one.
"Technical playing" is very relative term and everyone imagines something slightely different by that. Most of the people think that "technical" means complicated playing with a lot of coordination, polyrhythm skills and odd time signatures. I think that "technical" should mean a playing based on "technique". And that's exactly what blast beat is. Finger control in high speed + coordination = only technique and nothing else.
Blasting is just speed, the only drummers I've seen take it to the extreme are the early Napalm Death drummers that could do straight 8ths at about 300BPM with only one hand.
I know Minneman is amazing, I've seen him play at a clinic in town and not even break a sweat and make up 19/16 grooves on the spot, I'm just saying that blast beats aren't technical.
i was at this show and this was the by far the coolest thing ive ever seen. if he sat there blasting away it would have been boring. they played the full necrophagist cd at this show, he blasted enough

I'm sure Marco's glad he's NOT a death metal drummer because that means he's not a brain damaged speed head who knows nothing about what's difficult and well played and what's just movements based on rapid muscle flexing which every healthy person on earth can do.
I am glad he's not, his other work is fucking amazing if you are really into drumming.
Now that straight 300bpm blast beat fills are not exactly the easiest thing on earth but compared to switching up time signatures and working with two different time signatures between foot work and stick work, that's some tough shit right there.
300 bpm blasts arent the easiest thing but its in that category! You need to find the sweet spot on the pedals and try to make it effortlessly and yeah..you're good to go! Personally I like more challanges in my drumming than that since challanges makes you evolve! It's nothing wrong with playing fast tho! I play funk/progressive rock and speed is a good key to get control but it's not what you play, it's HOW and how u USE it. Most death drummers ABuse it.
Totally! Derek can do a lot more than just death! A lot of death drummers say "ooo look at me! I've studied jazz but I still play death" yeah but all you know is the common jazz ride pattern...you can't PLAY jazz just because of that. Derek is one of the few that actually IS, not just says he is, versatile as a musician, not just another lame death drummer who thinks death is THE genre that demands most talent which some bucko actually told me the other day. Didnt think he was for real at first

Their songs are not majorly blast beats. Marco has a fucking huge variety of unique styles. He uses all sorts of techniques which include polyrhythm, and all that shit. And Marco does not throw in random shit, all of his so-called "random shit" has PATTERNS.
Anyway, each one of these guys are fucking gods in the flesh.

Necrophagist is very technical. I very much enjoy the harmonies and overlapping guitar. The bass is also extemely good, though there are better I know.

You've got to be joking. The bass is extremely technicaly, like in the song Only Ash Remains where he has his little intro, and the drumming is extremely technical and stays in time with all the guitars time changes while doing so.

I know that. I've been a Marco fan for years, but Necrophagist is 80%+ blasting.
If you want technical Drums, Guitar, etc. look no further than Death, Atheist, Cynic, and Pestilence (Testimony of the Ancients album only).

I know about Kollias. He's fast, but I'd love to see him show his groovy side like Roddy has recently. Roddy gave up being a speed freak because there, quite frankly, aren't that many musical applications for it.

I'm not talking about speed with Kollias and Minneman. I just see their technicality when drumming. A lot of bands I've seen and heard stay on certain pieces of the set unfortunately. Minneman and Kollias are my two favourite drummers because of how technically advanced they are.

I personally see technicality in comparing this genre of music to others that I have heard. Compare the drumming of most shit Hardcore band drummers with Marco and there is a clear spectrum on drumming ability. Personally I think Marco and George Kollias are two of my favourite drummers, because of their abilities.

So from a certain point of view, blasts are very technical!

"Technical playing" is very relative term and everyone imagines something slightely different by that. Most of the people think that "technical" means complicated playing with a lot of coordination, polyrhythm skills and odd time signatures. I think that "technical" should mean a playing based on "technique". And that's exactly what blast beat is. Finger control in high speed + coordination = only technique and nothing else.

Blasting at 200BPM isn't very difficult.
Blasting is just speed, the only drummers I've seen take it to the extreme are the early Napalm Death drummers that could do straight 8ths at about 300BPM with only one hand.

Marco isn't a death metal drummer, in fact as far as I know Necrophagist was his time playing with a death metal band.

Now that straight 300bpm blast beat fills are not exactly the easiest thing on earth but compared to switching up time signatures and working with two different time signatures between foot work and stick work, that's some tough shit right there.

300 bpm blasts arent the easiest thing but its in that category! You need to find the sweet spot on the pedals and try to make it effortlessly and yeah..you're good to go! Personally I like more challanges in my drumming than that since challanges makes you evolve! It's nothing wrong with playing fast tho! I play funk/progressive rock and speed is a good key to get control but it's not what you play, it's HOW and how u USE it. Most death drummers ABuse it.

Totally! Derek can do a lot more than just death! A lot of death drummers say "ooo look at me! I've studied jazz but I still play death" yeah but all you know is the common jazz ride pattern...you can't PLAY jazz just because of that. Derek is one of the few that actually IS, not just says he is, versatile as a musician, not just another lame death drummer who thinks death is THE genre that demands most talent which some bucko actually told me the other day. Didnt think he was for real at first
