Personally I think Chet was better than Les Paul himself but that's my opinion. Sad that some 'guitar players' don't know who either one of them was...

@icystratopaul I think you are giving him too much credit... sure Steve Vai is technically a good player if you enjoy listening to dive bombs and scales/arpeggios played really fast. Knopfler and Chet Atkins are a completely different style of music. I personally would rather listen to a Dire Straits song or Chet Atkins playing any day over anything Steve Vai has ever done.

@FPSMatthew I hope you will forgive me for saying that, as far as I can tell, you have got completely the wrong idea about what Steve Vai represents. To say that he is just another soulless shredder is surely overstating the case. This not least because he rarely plays fast! Perhaps if you'd said the same thing about Yngwie Malmsteen I would have agreed. I suppose the only other thing I would add is that Chet Atkins performs plenty of sweeps and scales in this video.
