So after his wife left him, that's when he truly became insane and transform into The Joker we know now. Just listing to him when he talks about the story of his father, and from there you know he hated his father a lot, but when he talks about his wife leaving him, you can see from the way he says it, he was really hurt and tormented by it. He never got over of what his father did to his mom and him, and especially when his wife left him.
