This made me realize that you could find a stud this way and if you are looking for a more elusive one further down, you can measure out the rest of the studs on the wall (assuming they are 16" on center). I guess the further away you get, the more prone to small errors adding up. But less error if you are just looking to hang something at the next stud over. Thanks for the tips!
@StudLeez34 Yes most of the time that would be right. However older homes don't hold true to that. At least all of the time. Now that would also depend on what side that framer started from as well. So don't just assume 16" on center.
You're a lifesaver! I used this video to locate the studs in the wall without a stud finder to hang a new LCD TV on a mount in our bedroom. Your little electrical outlet trick did the trick! Thank you so much for this awesome and useful video.
That has got to be one of the BEST little DIY videos I have ever seen. Short, sweet, packed with ALL the info I need . . . and FUNNY too, but not in a gratuitous way. Dominick, thank you!
Thank you! I've had a stud finder for a while but i've never been sure if I was using it right. Now i'm more confident before I make that hole in the wall!
Maybe it's just in Canada, but here our studs are typically 16" apart, so if you find one, you can expect to find another 16" away. At least with houses that were built properly.
This is a very useful tip (finding the stud via the electrical outlet). Please excuse my ignorance in matters of construction, but what is the standard spacing between the studs? Thanks :)
Very good video! Someone said you should have your own TV show, and I agree. This was very helpful and your personality is great for tutorials/videos/etc.
@DominickDiy I'm looking for the joist in my house to repair the floors from squeaking and some idiot must have build this house the first 3 were perfect 16 inches away then the next one was 10 then 24 then 14 that was a pain in the ass man i like that method to finding the stud is that how i should hang my TV?
Thanks for the tip!! I guess most of us will turn on the stud finder before put it on the wall... and then start complaining the weird reading... haha!
Thanks to your video I have done most of the renovation in condo myself. Thank you! I wanted to install a chair rail and I was wondering if you'd be able to do a video on that when you get a chance. I'm too scared to do the inside miter cuts. I don't think my walls are exactly 90 degrees and I don't know how to cope. Anyway, I really enjoy your videos. Saved me a lot of money by sealing the windows too. Thanks again!
you're making marks all over the walls.
