Raphael is physically more dominant than Leonardo. It's just temper that sets him apart from Leonardo giving Leonardo the upper hand in most battles that. I feel this fight was showing people that the new age turtles at that time at least we're growing as individuals and Rafael was becoming more focused even when tempered.

sais are specifically for countering swords in battle... when sias are not being used as farm tools :) anyway i call BS leo is clearly the better fighter seeing as how when it was fistacuffs he wrecked raph... and there is no such weapon as ninjaken thats just some movie crap to make the katana seem more unique... sias is a great weapon to counter swords how ever allowing you to disarm and even shatter your opponents weapon... i argue that raph wouldnt have made inside leos range..
Best thing about this movie was this scene. Too bad this flick had a lame villain and story. Doing the Baxter Stockman (comics) story, crossed with the TCRI / Triceraton story could have worked.

Also, a lot of comments about how Leo lost a fight due to his weapons breaking. At the level of martial arts that the turtles are fighting at, the loss of weaponry should NOT matter. Weapons are nothing but an extension of our bodies. Case in point, Leo never got hit by Raph's whip chains. He could've struck back, but was (in his mind) making a point. What I'm saying about his ego, is that right from the start, he is giving a lecture to someone that he has absolutely no idea who they are. Raph even says this. Everything about this scene is fantastic. Not only the fighting, which is on the level of any live action martial arts film I've enjoyed, but the voice-acting!!! My god, the performances from both in that brief bit of dialouge was soooo engaging for me. Good stuff, they need to make another of these.

They hit the spot on this one. Performance was VERY good, and i too, would love to see another one coming in the near future.
@Keelox100: I really get the feeling they didn't want to make a scene that was "good FOR a kids movie" or "good, for the Ninja Turtles" but instead set out to make a quality scene by any standards. Unfortunately, I think this movie got hated on by a lot of people, and considering it was years ago now that it came out, I don't think we'll be seeing another direct sequel to this.

This is a great fight scene! The fact that they show BOTH Leo and Raph's weakness' here is awesome! Ego can be just as bad as anger. Both are blinding to what is actually happening, ultimately reality. The mind sees what it wants to see. I haven't seen the actual movie in a while, so I can't remember if they develop Leo as I am assuming they develop Raph's character. The fact that Leo blatantly states that he is better than Raph...ultimately shows that he really isn't...all fighting aside

I think Leo won the fight by losing. Leo didn't hold back, Raph did kick his ass cuz he was rampaging. But Leo proved to Raph that he's the appointed leader for a reason, because he doesn't let anger sway him. Raph breaks Leo's swords, then he still attacks him after he was defenseless. At that point, Leo kind of just stares at him dismissively because he proved his point, that he's better than Raph.
Anybody who is a fan of the original turtles, knows that Ralph is considered the strongest fighter, while Leo is considered the more skilled as far as technique and the best leader, as far as pure fighting power, Ralph is considered the strongest as he almost killed Shredder by himself and in his berserk mode he is akin to a ninja hulk...
1. Leo dominated the fist fight before, aka, before he knew he was fighting Raph.
2. If you look and pause closely at 3:28, you will see that Leo could have finnished Raph if he wanted to. He pulled back his sword because he didnt want to hurt him.
3.In most interpretations of the comics, Raph has confessed that Leo is better then him, which is kind of why he always has a grudge against him. He hates that Splinter chose Leo as his best student to lead
It would have been awesome at the end Raph jumps and tries to attack Leo, but he slices of his two legs, and only one arm, then a guy in a black robe takes his body and gives him black armor, replacing his missing body parts, giving him the title, "Darth Raphael".
The difference between the two, Leo IS the better fighter, but he was toying with Raph, he wasn't actually trying to kill him unlike Raph. plus in a real match, the sais would never ever break two katanas...Never. If Leo wanted to kill Raph, he would have, Raph let his anger cloud his judgement. Both good fighters, Raph did win the fight, but Leo is still better.

@MrImastinker I never could understand what people like in Leo. He is bland (or should I say Archetypical) "Hero" character, always-do-no-wrong and always right. Raphael is more deep - he has to deal with being number two (one of the worst positions to be), he's always angry because every minute he realizes that he and his brothers are alone in this world. Plus he's stronger physically and has more of a badass factor - he's practically Wolverine of Ninja Turtles.
@ResurrectedTemplar Leo's personality is important, he's the calm one who follows his master. Mikey tries and is still kind of a kid while Donny doesn't want to fight all that much and prefers to be more on the academic side. Raph is the one with the attitude, going against Leo, which shows when they fight in TMNT (2007), the 4th movie and animated too. They're teenagers, some are badass and some prefer to stick by the rules. You just have to appreciate it, that's what Splinter would say. :P

Of course Raph wins: this duel is supposed to mirror the one in the original Eastman & Laird comics (and, not to be forgotten, Raph is Eastman's fav turtle). However, in various TMNT incarnations, Leo is seen as the better fighter of the two (mainly in turtle training sessions). Also, Leo is the only one of the bros shown capable of taking down Splinter and Shredder respectively. A feat which remaining 3 turtles together are unable to accomplish. Furthermore, sai couldn't do shit against katana.

@Ticr00 Sai's are more of a aggressive form of a Jutte/Jitte, which were used by police, to catch and snap Katana, so in essence these weapons are Katana's exact opposite.

Sai and jutte/jitte are two different weapons and it doesn't really matter that cops in Okinawa carry them around. Western cops, for example, carry tonfa but they are still in major disadvantage when dealing against long range stabbing weaponry (it's the fire arms that makes difference). Ninjato/ninjaken, on the other hand, is a fictional weapon created for the purposes of Holywood (like you said).

@DRCsyntax you should try to put a katana in a vice grip and try to break it with a sai the way it is shown here. it wouldn't work although yes they could be used to disarm but that would be better if you had 2 sais vs. one sword not 2 vs 2. Katanas that are correctly made are some of the strongest swords in the world so no you could not break them with sais.

Process of creating one takes, like, forever. On the other hand, sais are mostly made out of cheap iron. I was gonna agree with you on previous comment, but now... @Budgiein87 Besides, ninjato significantly differs from katana. It has a long handlebar and a short blade in comparison. Leo's weapon of choice are katanas and are referred to as such throughout the series (regardless of whether Leo is a ninja or samurai). Whether you like it or not, katanas are universally considered as the deadliest close combat tool known to man and, without the doubt, the most durable one. Overuse of sais is,like the ninjaken, invention of modern media. Case closed.
@Ticr00 I beg to differ. A double edged straightsword is far more versatile than a katana. It can cut both ways and is better for thrusting. A thrust is generally faster than a cut. Also thrusting techniques are easier to learn than cutting ones. I'd prefer a longsword or chinese straight sword for dueling. Katanas are also weak against armor and shields. Katanas are best suited for use in the kitchen to slice a roast or some cheese. I bought one for this purpose and it works great!

Katana is the most known weapon to pierce. And Leonardo is using Ninjato--scrap-metal swords. They're the most known amongst ninjas not for its strength and piercing, but its light weight.
Fact: Longsword is design for strength but requires strength to make it semi-agile. Removes speed and flexibility for raw-power hacking. While a Samurai sword provides a small amount of weight for benefits all around

This video only shows that Raph's anger makes him stronger, but this doesn't mean that Raph is stronger than Leo. Leo "loses" cause of his weapons and cause of his behaviour at that moment (similar to Raph's behaviour). Leo is a better leader, and a better brother (at that moment), and he doesn't want to hurt Raph, he just want to stop the fight, but Raph can't control himself.

Also, a lot of comments about how Leo lost a fight due to his weapons breaking. At the level of martial arts that the turtles are fighting at, the loss of weaponry should NOT matter. Everything about this scene is fantastic. Not only the fighting, which is on the level of any live action martial arts film I've enjoyed, but the voice-acting!!! My god, the performances from both in that brief bit of dialouge was soooo engaging for me. Good stuff, they need to make another of these.

This is a great fight scene! The fact that they show BOTH Leo and Raph's weakness' here is awesome! Ego can be just as bad as anger. Both are blinding to what is actually happening, ultimately reality. The mind sees what it wants to see. I haven't seen the actual movie in a while, so I can't remember if they develop Leo as I am assuming they develop Raph's character. The fact that Leo blatantly states that he is better than Raph...ultimately shows that he really isn't...all fighting aside

I think Leo won the fight by losing. Leo didn't hold back, Raph did kick his ass cuz he was rampaging. But Leo proved to Raph that he's the appointed leader for a reason, because he doesn't let anger sway him. Raph breaks Leo's swords, then he still attacks him after he was defenseless. At that point, Leo kind of just stares at him dismissively because he proved his point, that he's better than Raph.

1. Leo dominated the fist fight before, aka, before he knew he was fighting Raph.
2. If you look and pause closely at 3:28, you will see that Leo could have finnished Raph if he wanted to. He pulled back his sword because he didnt want to hurt him.
3.In most interpretations of the comics, Raph has confessed that Leo is better then him, which is kind of why he always has a grudge against him. He hates that Splinter chose Leo as his best student to lead

The difference between the two, Leo IS the better fighter, but he was toying with Raph, he wasn't actually trying to kill him unlike Raph. plus in a real match, the sais would never ever break two katanas...Never. Raphael is more deep - he has to deal with being number two (one of the worst positions to be), he's always angry because every minute he realizes that he and his brothers are alone in this world. Mikey tries and is still kind of a kid while Donny doesn't want to fight all that much and prefers to be more on the academic side. Raph is the one with the attitude, going against Leo, which shows when they fight in TMNT (2007), the 4th movie and animated too. They're teenagers, some are badass and some prefer to stick by the rules. You just have to appreciate it, that's what Splinter would say. :P

Of course Raph wins: this duel is supposed to mirror the one in the original Eastman & Laird comics (and, not to be forgotten, Raph is Eastman's fav turtle). However, in various TMNT incarnations, Leo is seen as the better fighter of the two (mainly in turtle training sessions). Also, Leo is the only one of the bros shown capable of taking down Splinter and Shredder respectively. A feat which remaining 3 turtles together are unable to accomplish. Furthermore, sai couldn't do shit against katana.

@Ticr00 Dude In Okinawa the sai was used by domestic police,even before,Wasn't even Made in Japan it was first formed in India which it was called chabang then come across to the southen part of asia.Then found its way to japan which then it called the Jutte. Officials in Okinawa carried a jutte as a badge get ya shit right,plus the wooden sword was more Durable then the katanas/ninjato are made for hollywood So i cant say How Durable they really are but they must be identical to the katanas

@Budgiein87 Man, you made so many mistakes I don't even know where to start! Okay, here goes... Sai and jutte/jitte are two different weapons and it doesn't really matter that cops in Okinawa carry them around. Western cops, for example, carry tonfa but they are still in major disadvantage when dealing against long range stabbing weaponry (it's the fire arms that makes difference). Ninjato/ninjaken, on the other hand, is a fictional weapon created for the purposes of Holywood (like you said).

@Ticr00 Actually the sai breaking the katana the way they did WOULD happen genius. Secondly, in ALL incarnations Raph was always physically stronger; and far more aggressive. And just the fact alone that you say the ORIGINAL pulp has Raph beating Leo proves enough that Raph was always meant to the be better of the two.

Even if (by an impossible turn of events) you were to apply enough pressure for blade to crack, you'd still be unable to do so 'cos sai's handlebar would start rotating inside your palm. This goes double if you're wearing gloves (and Raph here does). Besides, in both comics and 2007 movie, Raph ADMITS Leo is the better one so wrap your head around that, you arrogant prick.

@DRCsyntax you should try to put a katana in a vice grip and try to break it with a sai the way it is shown here. it wouldn't work although yes they could be used to disarm but that would be better if you had 2 sais vs. one sword not 2 vs 2. Katanas that are correctly made are some of the strongest swords in the world so no you could not break them with sais.

@Budgiein87 Dude, please... They use wooden sword so no one would get hurt. Katanas are as tough as it gets. They are made out of finest steel and alloys. Process of creating one takes, like, forever. On the other hand, sais are mostly made out of cheap iron. I was gonna agree with you on previous comment, but now... It seems to me that you just love Raph so bad that you're blinded and, therefore, you're making this unforgivable overlooks.

@Budgiein87 Besides, ninjato significantly differs from katana. It has a long handlebar and a short blade in comparison. Leo's weapon of choice are katanas and are referred to as such throughout the series (regardless of whether Leo is a ninja or samurai). Whether you like it or not, katanas are universally considered as the deadliest close combat tool known to man and, without the doubt, the most durable one. Overuse of sais is,like the ninjaken, invention of modern media. Case closed.

@Ticr00 I beg to differ. A double edged straightsword is far more versatile than a katana. It can cut both ways and is better for thrusting. A thrust is generally faster than a cut. Also thrusting techniques are easier to learn than cutting ones. I'd prefer a longsword or chinese straight sword for dueling. Katanas are also weak against armor and shields. Katanas are best suited for use in the kitchen to slice a roast or some cheese. I bought one for this purpose and it works great!

Katana is the most known weapon to pierce. And Leonardo is using Ninjato--scrap-metal swords. They're the most known amongst ninjas not for its strength and piercing, but its light weight.
Fact: Longsword is design for strength but requires strength to make it semi-agile. Removes speed and flexibility for raw-power hacking. While a Samurai sword provides a small amount of weight for benefits all around

This video only shows that Raph's anger makes him stronger, but this doesn't mean that Raph is stronger than Leo. Leo "loses" cause of his weapons and cause of his behaviour at that moment (similar to Raph's behaviour). Leo is a better leader, and a better brother (at that moment), and he doesn't want to hurt Raph, he just want to stop the fight, but Raph can't control himself.

If you say that you may as well say What would have happened if raph felt like stabbing leo before the end of the fight? would have, should have, could have. What if Leo had a gun? At the end of the day Leo is old enough to get proper swords, raph used his weapons advantages to win the same as if leo had cut raph down at long distance it would be fair to say leo used his weapons advantage.
