I will admit I was surprised that Kogasa had the ability to cut the planet in half. And yes, I was surprised that it "missed". But it shouldn't really matter, because the thing that surprised me the most was the ability to make half of a planet "fall down" in space, thus killing the target and everyone else anyways via changes in g-forces, climate changes, atmosphere loss, etc.
