My daughter is 3 and loves the Magic Flute, because of the children's album, "Mozart's Magic Fantasy" which is sung in English with a few changes to the story line. She would not have become interested in it otherwise...I would love to show her this version so she can understand more of the story (we just watched the Ingmar Bergman film version and I gave up trying to read the subtitles to her, and they annoyed her anyway). Appreciation for the German text can come when she's older, if she wants
wookiehut--you are seeing allusions to the Lion King because this production of Flute was created by the producer of the Lion King, Julie Taymor. Very imaginative with use of Asian-themed puppetry. This is a really good translation, too. I think opera is always better in its original language, but having it in colloquial language makes it accessible to more people. The Russians figured that out years ago.
i can tell you, what they say doesn't compare to the german text. i love english, i love to look musical in english maybe phantom of the opera is better in english then in german but this opera is better in german, you must translate in english and listen to german this is soooooooo better
i wish i could have experienced opera like this when i was in grammar school, rather than having to get older to appreciate opera in all its forms and productions. this gorgeous production is brilliant and the quality of the english translation is so much better than others in the past. thank you so much for posting! (love the "lion king" based ideas and masonic allusions.)
This was a shortened version of the opera. They cut a lot of really nice parts and pared it down to about 90 minutes. I'm sure they made some difficult decisions when figuring out what to keep and what to cut. It's still good though.

Why did they cut out one of the best portions of this quintet?
