Her acting is very good. She does fight those miserable men trying to rape her, she yells at the one trying to tame her and yet shows how she has to fulfill Pedro's desires, because he can pay her. What a wonderful and powerful portray of an ill-fated prostitute. Love this version of the song, too.
After hearing this performance, I decided that Sophia's performance was "The Standard"; if it was not her voice, but a dub, then the singer deserves the true recognition.
The 'guttural' tones are what makes it so moving. No offense to talented sopranos, but the song is for women of low voice, as it reflects the despair reflected by the character of Aldonza
@Doughnut189 Yup, because Pedro (I think that's the guy's name..?) talked in the language the movie had been dubbed in, but the song remains in english no matter what, so they had to, like, cut ^^'
i thought she was fairly good, she has said many times she is not a singer, she is a talented actress and a stunningly gorgeous, that is why she was hired for this role, well that and her star draw she would bring to film, this was not her best song in the film, but REALLY want to hear an amazing singer, Joan Diener the orginal aldonza, she is STUNNING!!!
xD She doesn't have that vibrato in her voice that other people that've performed this song had, but I'm going be honest and say that this vibrato probably no longer appealed to everyone by the time Man of La Mancha was filmed, anyway.

The problem with the movie version, is that no one can sing. Did you know she's supposed to be a soprano?

This is such a good movie. Never seen the play or anything, sure it's good as well. Love this though. Such a classic.

The only one to not sing their own lines was Peter O'Toole. They were told to sing in character, not like broadway singers.

How does she manage to look so gorgeous dressed as a dirty, poor prostitute/maid???

this song is not only for women. its also for abused gay men like me. I was raped by men and i feel like singing this song as a bottom gay.

Most girls who were abused at a young age over a prolonged period of time would appreciate this song. Her performance is wonderful.

She isn't that great of a singer...

No she's not but I think it's her performance that really catches your eye. She loathes what she does and you can tell with every line.
