Truly, one of the great Lost Videos and great Lost Songs in the Bush canon. In these myopic, homogenic times, who will stand out, who will demand our attention? No one, I fear. Gone are the days. Thank fuck for Kate.
Gaffa was a liquid latex used in theatrical applications. Some folks confuse gaffa with the super sticky GAFFERS tape. Close enough for rock 'n roll I suppose. The image is having the experience of being caught in an imaginary or spiritual web-like situation. I don't suppose someone could literally find him/herself suspended therein, but if so, wouldn't s/he know the content of the suspension? The song is about desire & fulfilment, yes?
Just checked out Ra Ra Riot's version. You're kidding me, right? They didn't even bother making any interesting innovations. The original is better. Always is. Almost always. Jennifer Warren covers some of Leonard Cohen's songs better than he did, but that's an exception.
Always thought this was one of Kate Bush's very best songs, and I am *really* impressed with this video. Notice how the visual material is very simple, which keeps your attention focused on the (complicated) music. The song is like a demented calliope waltz, and the video is a very nice little piece of performance art.
@LOLDISNEYLAND Ra ra riot didn't get their name off of cover songs..I'm glad you have your opinion and all but that's a fact that you have backwards. Lots of bands cover songs and that doesn't mean that's what they need to get a "name".
@DelKFC Shows that you are another spoiled shitless latest generation faggot who knows nothing about music. Ra ra riot fucking SUCKS FAT DICK! They have to cover great artists like Kate Bush to get a name for themselves. Your music taste might not be bad, it's all up to preference, but I clearly see you are a dull fucker according to the nature of your comment. I'm sorry if I offend you, but you really need to go fuck yourself with a ra ra riot cd. Do they even have a fucking album? All EPs lol
@LOLDISNEYLAND i dont think i'll be taking comments from someone with the username LOLDISNEYLAND too seriously...however, suspended in gaffa is one of my least favourite Ra Ra Riot songs. They dont need to cover shit like this to make them good. And yes, they do have an album, so you obviously dont know anything about them. Now please fuck off 'lol'
@DelKFC Why should I fuck off when you are the one that doesn't like this vid/song? I don't want to know anything about Ra Ra Dickheads because I simply don't fucking care. Now YOU fuck off.

@OMGImKaren Ra Ra Riot's version isn't better than this though. This is absolutely rapturous and sublime. Kate takes it in to the ether as only she can.

It's not fair to compare Kate Bush and Joanna Newsom either. Back when Kate Bush was prolifically making music, she was extremely popular in the UK, Europe, and even in the US. Her albums almost always peaked at the top of UK charts. She deserved every bit of acclaim and popularity she received and so much more. Joanna Newsom doesn't have a fraction of her popularity; her latest CD sold only around 1000 copies. I love them both dearly. I think lately people have lost their musical sensibility.
I have singing this song constantly for the past week. It's a work of genius that's catchy, powerful, meaningful, and a work of art all at the same time.
Something you rearly see anymore, a singer-songwriter...those were the golden days of music...when you had to buy the album and sit down and listen to it!!! Kate was and still is the woman!
It always amazes how Kate took the time and effort to do so many creative videos for The Dreaming and her previous albums -- all the more remarkable when you think these came out in the late
So Lady Gaga and Joanna Newson can make it in the U.S, but not Kate?? (nothing against joanna and gaga, but this kate!!!!!!! this is like my fave song!)
@lovettbeatle I'm sorry but how the fuck can you compare Joanna Newsom and Lady Gaga?
And Joanna Newsom didn't "Make it in the US", she's an indie artist, she's not on the radio. Sure, she sells records and is popular amongst the indie music community but using her and lady gaga in the same example is just stupid.
@SolidTurtle i don't hav anything against either of them. i think tht joanna's cool for doing her own thing, and lady gaga's totally copying elton john (nobody attack me for tht!) it's just pity nobody here got to hear kate's awesomeness. joanna 'made it' more than kate. like i hear her songs in stores 'n stuff.
@lovettbeatle What "stores" do you hear Newsom in? Walmart on Pluto? I've heard plenty of Kate Bush songs in "stores 'n stuff," in fact, I just heard "How To Be Invisible" in a Starbucks--does that mean Kate has re-made it?
@BadChristians Eh, I say Gaga is trying to steal Toyah's wardrobe. She's nothing like Kate. Maybe if Kate was lobotomized, she'd still be better than Gaga.
lol me too! i grew up listening to her and ive never gotten over the fun of her music and vids. her whole performance in every act always excites me and brings me back to being six years old! :D
@hexmanhex agreed, ra ra riot are way better. i don;t think i could listen to the version as much as i listen to the other. not that this is bad, it's just.. as good.
@cosmicrider287 That's what I think too. Hounds of Love is totally incredible, but the Dreaming is UNBELIEVABLE, even by today's standards of innovativeness.
@MySubmarineIsYellow Yes,, yess!! I am thinking about freezing a hot waffle with pieces of garden fertiliser and placental extract from the amniotic fluid. Plants they grows large for me.
I like all Kate Bush albums, but this one (The Dreaming) is my favourite. This is so much above ordinary pop music. I always grieve that something like this does not seem to be possible in music today. ...But maybe there comes a time again...
Is Kate one of the top three most talented songwriters and singers of all time in contemporary music? I think so because she breaks the barriers between pop music, classical music and experimental music.
This woman is a fantastic artist. She said in one interview I saw that the videos for the dreaming were rushed and that she wasn't happy with them, but even still she manages to be incredibly theatrical and compelling without having a lot to work with. ( and I have to say I think this is far better than the RRR version. I think the message of the song is expressed far more effectively and the cover just can't match her vocals, even though they are blisteringly wierd)
No, you have bland taste, Rekichan. If you honestly can't see the brilliant artistry in Kate's music, then there is something wrong with YOU, not the ones who like her.
I AM saying Kate Bush is great!! Some one else did a cover of this song and personally I just feel it is not as good as KATE BUSH's version. Why in the hell would i be hating on Kate Bush...?!?!
Did I misread your post? Sorry, I thought you were saying "why do you guys like her"? Now I can't find your post, so I forgot exactly what you said, but it sounded negative. My apologies.
That is quite alright. I can understand how you misread it, the power of the wrong punctuation at the end of a sentence is indeed a strong one. No worries i am not offended. ^-^
@Rekichan16 Ra Ra Riot did a cover of this song and it is AMAZING! Her version is beautiful, though... something about it is a bit eerie and mystical sounding... I can't explain it. Anyways, Ra Ra Riot's is better!
Will everyone stop going on about RRR? This is Kate's video, just sit back and enjoy it like a normal person with out needing to annoy fans with your whining about the cover being better.
Thank you very much. Seriously, stfu already about RRR. this woman is a genious. Thats why people like to cover her fucking songs! Like running up that hill, helloooo....fuck...stfu...the original is always the best, thats why its the ORIGINAL...fuck
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I love this version, but I think RRR captured the feeling a little more adequately. Then again, I'm a long-standing fan of RRR so it's only second nature to defend them.
I actually heard their version of the song first and was absolutely amazed by it, so I looked into it more, i saw this gal sang it Originally, and i couldnt agree with you more. RRR is PHENOMENAL!
How can you possibly say that a cover version captures the feeling of the song more than the person who wrote it? You may prefer it, and that's fair enough, but the feeling of the song belongs to the writer, who knows what every last word means.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well, I have to agree with the OP. I find the Ra Ra Riot cover is a lot more expressive.
This version's vocals a little to staccato. and the backup vocals are weird. It's really hard to understand the lyrics even. No disrespect to Kate Bush, she's got some amazing songs, but the RRR cover of this one is just plain better IMO. It stuck with me the first time I heard it.
If I had heard this one first, it wouldn't have gotten my attention. It's just too weird to get the feeling across.
@gavinj90 just because someone is the original writer of something doesn't mean their version is the best. "best version" is subjective and depends entirely on what the song means to the listener.
@arosegrowingold Gaffa is a super sticky tape that many roadies use to stick audio leads to the floor so nobody trips over them. Apart from this I think it is one of 3 vids Kate did that included her mother. ---All the best. -- Kate forever!
@arosegrowingold One was a family interview, the other was approx 2 minutes into The Big Sky. She has an aviators hat on. - I also used to think Lily, but don't know, & it is not confirmed.--Any rumours of the new album title yet???
@viking1au Ohh, I'm so tempted to write 'My life on smack' or 'I like it doggy style in a gothic mansion' and start the most unlikely internet rumour....
Lily was her personal healer during her dark days in the early 90s - not her mum!
what is gaffa?? this is cool, espeically considering its the original, but really weird to hear it after only previously hearing the ra ra riot version

Kate Bush's version IS WAAAAAYY Better? What you peeps talkin' 'bout?? Maybe i just have strange taste?
Rekichan16 2 years ago
No, you have bland taste, Rekichan. If you honestly can't see the brilliant artistry in Kate's music, then there is something wrong with YOU, not the ones who like her.

I AM saying Kate Bush is great!! Some one else did a cover of this song and personally I just feel it is not as good as KATE BUSH's version. Why in the hell would i be hating on Kate Bush...?!?!
Rekichan16 2 years ago 11
Did I misread your post? Sorry, I thought you were saying "why do you guys like her"? Now I can't find your post, so I forgot exactly what you said, but it sounded negative. My apologies.
JohnnySwitchblade 2 years ago

RRR is PHENOMENAL!
coopcooper44 2 years ago
How can you possibly say that a cover version captures the feeling of the song more than the person who wrote it? You may prefer it, and that's fair enough, but the feeling of the song belongs to the writer, who knows what every last word means.

It's just too weird to get the feeling across.
nwimpney 2 years ago
@gavinj90 just because someone is the original writer of something doesn't mean their version is the best. "best version" is subjective and depends entirely on what the song means to the listener.

I'd love to have been there when EMI heard this first time!
Kate: 'It's a song about searching for a glimpse of god and being hampered by life's obstacles and your fears.'
EMI: 'Okaaaay'
Kate: 'It's done to a polka tune'
EMI: 'Riiiiight - so what's 'Gaffa' Kate?''
Kate: 'I've no idea.'
EMI: 'An album track, eh?'
Kate: 'No, a single, of course'
EMI man faints.

Gaffa is tape that musicians use at concerts.
pcase2493 2 years ago 2
That's 'gaffer'
arosegrowingold 2 years ago
Gaffer tape, gaffer's tape, gaff tape or gaffa tape is a strong, tough, cotton cloth pressure sensitive tape ("Gaffer Tape" Wikipedia).
You are correct, but people also call it gaffa tape.
pcase2493 2 years ago
apparently it's also slang for heroin when spelt like this...which would make sense
monkeyintheforest 2 years ago
Gaffa is irish slang for heroin. The tape is gaffers tape. Im pretty sure she's talking about heroin....

@arosegrowingold Gaffa is a super sticky tape that many roadies use to stick audio leads to the floor so nobody trips over them. Apart from this I think it is one of 3 vids Kate did that included her mother. ---All the best. -- Kate forever!
viking1au 1 year ago
@viking1au She's working on her next album as we write this..
But which other 2 videos did her mum appear in?
arosegrowingold 1 year ago
@arosegrowingold One was a family interview, the other was approx 2 minutes into The Big Sky. She has an aviators hat on. - I also used to think Lily, but don't know, & it is not confirmed.--Any rumours of the new album title yet???
viking1au 1 year ago
@viking1au Ohh, I'm so tempted to write 'My life on smack' or 'I like it doggy style in a gothic mansion' and start the most unlikely internet rumour....
Lily was her personal healer during her dark days in the early 90s - not her mum!
Will have to look out in 'The Big Sky ' tho
Keep spreading the word!
