@r3tard3dazn4lif3 cold weather will muffle the sound of the drum. In our school, we put a small portable heater in the drum and cover it with blanket. All will be removed 5 minutes before the exhibition.
what I do is put a towel over the top of the drum. Itll sound a bit muffled, but definitely quieter x] Since I have 2 big drums in my house, volume is definitely an issue .__. it sounds different, but it still works for the purpose of practicing.

any Chinese Novelty store should have small drums.
If your in NYC just check out Bok Lei Bo or Bok Lei Tat. They got a few different sizes that range in price from $10-$50

My Sifu use to tell me just grab a phone book to
hit, but a small drum is more practical and not
as loud as the big one. Great job drumming.
