My mum was a cellist thru the 50's and into the early 60's for a small orchestra in Massachusetts, so that was my first exposure to music. As for buying records, folk music of the early 60's was "it." I played the trombone in school bands then later took up the tenor sax, so blues and traditional jazz became my adult favorites.
On the radio, we expect it. But in vlogs, you're right - background music (with lyrics, anyway) can be very distracting. So the volume better be set at a reasonable level so I can still hear the person speak. Otherwise, that message is lost on me.
And about certain original recordings being 'personal' - went to a Heart concert in 2003 and had a lackluster time because I had grown up with the studio recordings. Hearing them pound out "Magic Man" and "Barracuda" 25 yrs later was a letdown.
Yeah, it was definitely a disappointment (but partly because this drunk chick in front of us was on the verge of causing a riot). But after this concert, and then a few weeks later seeing Boston perform (a band I only ever 'sorta liked'), the lesson was learned. Boston rocked the house and I enjoyed myself immensely because I wasn't tied to those classic studio recordings.
PS. "Barracuda" popped up in a short comment system vlog/rant a while back.
That's another problem with seeing the songs you've grown up with, performed live. If the band do a slightly different version you feel cheated somehow. You want it to sound like that fave record, don't you?
I've still got several early Boston cd's & they still sound pretty good as well :)
I'm sure your mum wasn't happy about her knitting needles being used in that fashion ;)
I agree, I don't like background music. I get distracted by it and, just like you, I want to hear the song and tune out everything else. That's one of the reasons why I don't like vloggers placing music on the background. I'm getting used to it, but I don't like it.
Turn it off or turn it UP! I agree with you 100%! There are times when i turn it down though if i'm reading or on the phone...otherwise, crank it! (Esp at parties and stuff!)
And I"m LOLing at the "JUDAS" thing! I always roll my eyes when i hear of how upset ppl were that Dylan did that. To me, change is the exciting thing about music. Gosh, when U2 came out with Achtung Baby I just COULDN'T believe it and LOVED it!
Oh yes---Achtung Baby is my favorite U2 album. Even though they had all those classic songs before that, when I heard Zoo Station kick in for the first time, it elevated (pun intended) U2 to a different level to me. They say that album "chopped down the Joshua Tree"...and how great is that? Most bands would have tried to make "The Joshua Tree pt 2".
Yes....That's probably why I like U2 and the Beatles so much. I see so many parallels. Bono definitely has a John Lennon thing goin on in his activism. And to me, Achtung Baby and Zooropa were the Sgt. Pepper/Magical Mystery Tour era of the Beatles. It's fascinating to watch -- to see how a band puts it all in the blender and to see what they will come up with next!
I've discussed that in depth with friends. U2 really had their huge success in 87 with "With Or Without You." That was 5 or so albums in to their carreer. Most acts these days would have been dropped by that point. But yet, the record companies wonder why sales are declining? Maybe they should spend less resources on a sure thing that will be discarded in a day and more time on the diamonds in the rough!
I totally agree. Nowadays bands get 1, maybe 2 albums to be successful. If they're not, they're dropped.
It's always going to be a bit of a hit & miss affair signing new bands. But now they look for an instant return, rather than seeking out bands with the potential to develop.
As you say, no wonder sales are declining & bands are going it alone :)
I really think in the next 10 years, the model that the music industry has been using will be dead. Online sales and self-promotion and self-distribution is getting easier and easier for the aritsts. I'm sure you've heard about Radiohead's album...allowing fans to pay whatever they want for it. Despite how bad things are with the RIAA right now, i think it's also a new dawn, in a way, for music and very exciting!
I'm sure things will & probably have to change, like you say.
Radiohead & Prince are able to, effectively, give their albums away, because they are established artists. They've made their money & have loyal many fans. A new, young band might not be able to do that.
A lot of the more established bands now rely on tours to bring the money in, so they give their music away as free advertising :)
I agree. It's interesting to see Madonna get that huge deal to...away from the record companies. I think the way the internet and distribution is changing, artist may no longer need to get as "huge" as they once were to be big. I NEVER listen to the radio anymore...i program my iPod to play what I want. The internet will allow niche markets to form and these smaller artists will be discovered that way.
Sadly, it's all about program directors now....Although as FM radio dies out, satalite radio is growing. I think the real DJs of our day will end up over there. Perhaps there's a place for a totally random radio station in a satellite world! :)
Radio, like lots of other things, has become too corporate these days. It all sounds the same. I think that's one reason why a lot of listeners have turned off.
It's like us coming to YT because the TV nowadays is boring. People want a bit of variety & something a bit different.
Maybe satellite radio is the answer. I wonder if they have any DJ vacancies? :)
Oh absolutely! The Fab Four are still at the top of my list. The first music I remember being awareof at all was Elvis in his "Hound Dog" phase. He was a sensation and I remember echoing my parent's opinion that he was a flash in the pan! LOL well - I was not even a teenager then. Things changed the night The Beatles were on Ed Sullivan. My folks opinion and mine diverged, never to meet again.
interesting stuff, and yes I can remember taping things off the radio. one of my earliest memories is probably ABBA - blame my sister for that! even now I can vividly remember her getting the SuperTrooper album (not sure if that was what it called but it had that song on it) for Christmas in the late 70s.
it also mentioned 'going shopping in Tesco' and if it didn't, that was certainly what it sounded like although I'm sure Curt can confirm. 'Tesco' is a supermarket chain in the UK.
I'm a quiet person most of the time I have my internal thoughts so I don't have music. When music is on we are listening and dancing to it. We listen to most music in the car or go to live bands. When I was a student travelling I had my Walkman and it was like a soundtrack to passages of my life that are now brought back by the music so strongly. I love what by the way - T-shirt? Cheers, Lesley
I don't listen to music as much as you might imagine, partly for the reasons i mentioned. But i usually have tunes buzzing around my head!!
The t.shirt is my 'I Love New York' one i bought there in August. It was just pure coincidence that i was wearing it when i started talking about passion etc:)
I was only that way about music waaaayyy back in my pot smoking days! I had to listen to it with my complete attention. The first song I really remember is Ray Charles's "I Can't Stop Loving You." It was at the public swimming pool one Saturday and somebody played it over and over on the jukebox hooked up to the PA system. I still love that song and any other song by Ray Charles to this day.
I remember going to a concert back in the 70's where The Spinners opened for The Temptations and having chills practically through the Spinners whole set. I still remember how absolutely thrilling they were that night and how I kept tearing up just because I was so glad to be there to hear it and see it.
I'm sort of split on this. Sometimes I like having music on really soft in the background while driving around and having conversations with friends. In a way it makes awkward silences un-awkward because there's music to tune your mind to. At the same time I also don't really like talking over music in my videos because it seems disrespectful to the musicians.
I understand what you're saying, music can certainly stimulate a conversation.
I agree with your second point. Unless the music was written to be played in the background, which would be very unusual, i feel it should be played so it can be heard :)
Lol I know what you mean about background music, I'm definetly the same there - I remember in school when the radio was on the background, used to do my head in, had to get it off lol - the only time there should be "background music" is in an elevator!
PS: You should think about a vid to do with this 'banning Scots' from voting on English matters in Westminster. Would be interesting to hear an Englishman's view.
The trouble with elevator music is it's so bland. That's probably not a bad thing though, because if there was a good song playing, i'd end up staying in the elevator to hear all of it!! :)
Background music - At work in the toy and game factory the radio is on but very hard to hear unless your under the speaker, When at home no radio on cause I am either on You Tube or watching tv. I love all kinds of music as you can see from my channel. Catch you nexttime LOL.
And don't stop either, I would miss it, I will keep saying ok and hope you enjoyed it on my vids.
I have so many cds and music dvds I end up listening to the radio as I can't choose what to listen too. Anyway Ok nite from south Eastern Ireland, some great beaches over here that I have on vhs from 8mmcamcorder.
lol "turn it off or turn it up!" Personally I have music on pretty much constantly! I wake up to it and fall asleep to it.. I guess I'm quite good at mulitasking - I feel like I can listen to it while doing something else, it's not as good as just listening to the cd, but then a cd isn't as good as seeing it live.
Oh well, good video!
Dave. x
p.s. I have some covers up if you wanna see if I completely ruined them! haha
It's not so much the multitasking aspect, but rather that i just WANT to listen to the music rather than do anything else. It demands my complete attention :)
hmm... Take right now - I'm listening to music while replying to some messages and things, that doesn't require much effort/attention - I'd get bored if I wasn't listening to something! Plus it stops me getting so mad when pages take ages to load! I admit though I do get sidetracked sometimes thinking about the music, but i like that!
It's also good if someone boring is talking! they think you're agreeing but you're just nodding on the first+third beats!
I know lots of people like to listen to music as they work, it helps them to concentrate.
It's good that you continue to listen to Phillipine music, we need to keep all forms of music alive :)

"Barracuda" what a great song that is. I love the guitar in that & i'm sure i've heard it in one of your videos before.
I know you're a Heart fan. I remember "Dreamboat Annie" from way back, still a good album though.

Also, i tend to end up listening to the music & not listening to the vlog itself :)

First music I can remember would be Michael Jackson, Chris Rea, John Lennon and Nirvana. Thats being born in 1991.

I can remember the impact Nirvana made back then, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' is still one of my favourite songs.
Strange that John Lennon made such an impression, after all he'd died 11 years before you were born :)

And i agree 'Achtung Baby' was a bit of a change in direction wasn't it? It still stands up well though :)

anakin1814 4 years ago
U2 have always been a band to try new things, which is good. As you say, a lot of bands tend to rest on their laurels.
Most of the best bands are always searching for something new, The Beatles were another great example of that :)
andymooseman 4 years ago
Yes....That's probably why I like U2 and the Beatles so much. I see so many parallels. Bono definitely has a John Lennon thing goin on in his activism. anakin1814 4 years ago
I knew you'd agree with The Beatles comparison :)
One major problem nowadays is, how many new bands of today would be allowed the time to evolve like U2 & The Beatles? Not many, if any, i reckon.
How many, potentially, world changing bands are slipping through the net, because they're not being allowed to mature? :(
andymooseman 4 years ago
I've discussed that in depth with friends. U2 really had their huge success in 87 with "With Or Without You." That was 5 or so albums in to their carreer. I really think radio is on the way out, or at least becoming a very niche market. But that won't pay the bills!!
Speaking as somebody who's had some involvement in radio, that's quite depressing, but it's the reality i'm afraid.

If they do, let me know!
The sad thing is, much like the record companies, radio did this to themselves, their playlists are shrinking and commercial time is growing.
Specialization is the wave of the future...and gasp...that's what we're doing here!
I think should DJ the first inter-continental satelite radio show from two remote locations! :)
anakin1814 4 years ago
I like the sound of inter-continental radio.
We could have two Breakfast shows & then two Drivetime shows.
That's pretty original!! :)

LOL - so glad you asked, 21stCC!
The passage you might be thinking of goes a little something like this...
"I was sick and tired of everything
When I called you last night from glasgow
All I do is eat and sleep and sing
Wishing every show was the last show"
They may or may not have gone shopping at Tesco. Would've been easier for them before they became popular in the late 70s, but who's to say.
Hope this was helpful (or at least not disturbing!)
