I don't like my generation, the 1920s seemed a lot interesting than the 90's nothing special about it being a 90's girl nothing to say about it that I can actually think of
I know it sounds sappy, even though this is a very beautiful and happy song I tear up every time I hear it. Maybe it's the fact that music like this will never like this will be made again. Also even though in the 1920's things were worse such as Racism and Crime during prohibition, but I would much rather live in those times. At least people were decent, society was decent and people looked out for you. Not anymore. I'd rather be 24 in 1927 than 2012. What has society come to? Just my opinion.
My grandparents were about Genes age. They loved this song and it and other songs gave them hope and courage to live through the Great Depression. It all makes me cry.
I wasn't one of Hal Roach's Little Rascals, known in the 30s as "our Gang", for movie shorts. But my agent got me my only speaking movie role in an Edgar Rice Burroughs movie, "The Lion Man", 1936 at age 7. I checked, and Morse, Texas still has a population of 150. The town gets verrry cold in winter at the top of the Texas Panhandle.
On the Smashing Pumpkins Box set Airplane Flies High. Billy Corgan does a cover of this song that is more close to the original. Rather then the Fats Domino. If you can find it give it a listen very good.
I was born the year after Gene Austin recorded this song. My family consisted of my father, mother and me. My dad and mother performed this song at home: my father singing, my mother on the piano and banjo. I believe this was the first song I heard and knew, and I first thought the song was about the three of us, although my mother's name wasn't Molly. Later I learned it was a Gene Austin song. This old record is wonderful.
@morsetexas You win - I was born in (as recently as) 1935. I'm a kid. I am a Peruvian in Peru but I have a daughter in Houston, TX, who lives there with her husband (from Texas), a boy, a girl, and a pet schnauzer. I too loved that music - I remember playing the 78 rpm in my dad's Victrola in WWII times!
Such a beautiful song. Always a favorite as a young child. All the grown up's knew it and was sang everywhere. It is a time long gone by. It's such a shame really.
I have a beautiful boat, painted in French Blue, high gloss oil, trimed in vibrant white and considered calling her Blue Heaven. Now after the listening to the timeless voice of Gene Austin, I will.
@MrRoryConway Aside from this classic, your boat sounds like one too. Is that colour - French Blue - widely available? Is it a marine-purpose paint, i.e., anti-fungal etc? Sounds like a delicious colour!
Gene Austin's My Blue Heaven was the biggest selling single until Bing Crosby's White Christmas came along in 1942. White Christmas was itself replaced as the biggest selling single by Elton John's remake of Candle in the Wind reworded to a tribute to Princess Diana. selling
The music was written by Walter Donaldson, the lyrics by George A. Whiting. The song was published in 1927 and became a huge 1928 hit on Victor 20964-A for crooner Gene Austin; charted for 26 weeks, stayed at #1 for 13, and sold over five million copies; recorded on September 14, 1927; and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1978.
Love the whistling! And not just any whistler, either: It's Robert MacGimsey, writer (not composer I assume, but the one who first wrote it down) of Sweet Little Jesus Boy, which is my favorite Spiritual. MacGimsey could whistle in chords, believe it or not. He could whistle up to three notes with his perfect pitch.
I love the innocence in Gene Austin's music, and so divine! I've only recently discovered him, and have completely fallen for every song I've heard! It's such a great feeling finding a whole catalog of fantastic tunes... They've been waiting for me. And then just the other day my mother told me that my Grandpa (who I'd never really met), his favorite artist was Gene Austin, and he would always whistle the tunes. I'm so happy.
Wow! That's my favorite of this song. Sure makes me think of dad. God, I wish he could see this. I have this and Jimmie Rodgers and Tipperary just to name a few on his Edison gramaphone. If I could show him that you can now do it in just a "click"', he'd probably never get out of this chair. Thanks for posting.
Iused to have an EP of Genes' which had a melody of three songs on each side and this was one of them. She's funny that way was another. I haven't got that anymore so if anyone has it can they up load it please.
It is claimed this was the first million selling recording. Austin is definitely worth rediscovering--he had a very unique style (I frankly don't consider this song one of his best efforts--but you should check out many other songs he recorded in that era!)
Ah, thanks for posting this song. I like this version of the song almost as much as Fats. It has a sad twinge to it now that it's so old. I suppose it's because whenever you hear old music like this in TV or movies something bad is about to happen. It's beautiful though.
To Chefflick, you have a time machine its called YouTube, It sure is great to be able to see and listen to all this forgotten talent.Thank you edmundusrex.

Just used this song, which I bought off iTunes recorded by gene Austin, for my grama's memorial video. She was born in 1911 and married in 1927--her favorite song. I was so glad to find the original. Truly a treasure!
By 1927 most people had radios and sales of records plumeted. This was the last million seller in the 20's or 30's. Glenn Miller's Chatanooga. Choo Choo in 1941 revived record sales!
An all-time top seller for years, some say until Bing Crosby's "While Christmas" in 1942. This 1927 smash set up Austin as the best selling singer of the year. (Giddins, Bing Crosby A Pocketful of Dreams The Early Years, pg 157)
