just imagine rectangle black box with one hole at the bottom and one hole at the top. hot air goes up, so air flow will arise. can somebody explain me, why there are the cans?
it's because it's wayy less efficien beacause the can's round shaped top has more surface for the sun to shine on and also the air will be better mixed beacause with only a black hollow box there would be cold air on top of the glass and hot air on the black side. Your concept would work well without forced air but it's less efficient. You could also use a aluminium air duct painted black, that would work as well..hope it helps ;)
What did you use for the top transparent board? Some kind of PVC? Is it tinted or only seems so? Wouldn't tintedPVC reduce the efficiency of the collector?
Great project! What temperature is it outside to produce 180 degree heat? What kind of heat have you gotten at colder temps- 20 to 35 degrees Fahrenheit? Thanks

My thoughts too. I totally turned the volume down and just watched the video. I can't stand to watch a good video with the awful music that is commonly put with it.
Nice and neat, good work dude!!! I'm about to start bulding my own heater, a smaller version though,.. because I want to do several tests with different designs to reach the best performance. Is it really neccesary to cut the holes of the cans in that helix shape?
On the Thurmalox paint: standard flat black has absorbance (a) = .96, emmisivity (e) = .96, meaning that it will readily radiate what it absorbs. Thurmalox has a = .96, e = .52, so it will radiate less of what it absorbs to surrounding air. Heated air app should use standard flat black. Heated transfer fluid (i.e. black aluminum fins to copper tube containing fluid) should use Thurmalox. Make sense?
Fantastic job and project very neat! I am planning to build one too very soon, still collecting info. We use gas for heating our house in Hungary. But the prices as extremely high for gas and electricity aswell. Very nice bike! :)
@jeanlucvar Hello to you in France, aluminum is what you want,no rust and conducts heat very well. Also do not bother with the fin's,there not needed; (\O
Since this is practically the same design as cansolair, can you attest to the fact that those guys are full of shit about lexan shape? They're charging $3000.00 for this and I am almost certain that curving the lexan actually reduces light transmission by a fraction...as opposed to flat or concave. I'm sure yours works great none the less...I'm assuming you're also forcing air into it, rather than pulling it out.
@magicyte Curving the lexan give's you more air space between lexan and can's.Also it makes the lexan rigid,so wind can't make it flop around.I am pushing air thru it but would rather pull the air thru,but I will need a fan that can handle the heat and they cost a lot more.Hope this helps;
@my2cents0 I'm designing mine with a wall heater fan unit...minus the heater core. But forcing air into rather than pulling is better though. It causes turbulant air, rather than directional, almost completely negates having to worry about in/outake positioning. I'm lucky with my design since I'm using soffit. Gives me many air routing options. I'm also lucky since being up north in canada...our sun stays pretty low for fall/winter, so it will be wall mounted and wind won't be an issue.
@my2cents0 Did you know that Lexan actually blocks up to 40% uv light? Thought Id put in my 2 cents on that :P.. What do the little propellers do for you..air turbulence ? I'm just starting mine and still gathering ideas so far ive cut the drink opening on the cans into fins to create turbulence. Also thinking of putting in steel wool to help trap more heat but not sure if it would block to much air flow or not. Any ideas you would do now would be appreciated. Thanks..great looking build
@BestFreeWow The turbulence and fins and all that is simply to increase heat transfer. Think of it as a system. Heat in = suns intensity x projected surface area towards the sun. Heat loss = conduction through the box walls to the outside air. The best way to make it efficient is to keep the temperature of the box LOW, thus reducing heat loss through the walls of the box. Higher temp = higher delta T = more heat loss. More airflow = lower temp = less heat loss but same heat in.
Very interesting, enjoyed the video. What kind of temperature zone do you live in ?Is this device heating your home, or used in conjunction with another heat source ?Thanks, I am seeking just this kind of information.
I'm just finishing up one where the cans are pushed together as opposed to caulked and I don't have fins. I hope to get it in the sun tomorrow to get a look at what sort of performance I can expect. Nice job on your first one!
@vpbubbies I cut them out of flattened cans with scissors. But I would not use them, they slow air flow to much, make's you need a bigger fan. In the Hungarian link next to my vid they show how to make fin's but they don't use them any more either.
@my2cents0 Truly appreciate your help mate, cheers! Ques: "they dont use the fins anymore either"? (Why?) is it NOT required to have the air in the tube doing "the ole vortex" motion in order to scrub the heat from the sides of the can? Will the air merely passing straight up through the cans provide suficient heat? Again, thanks for sharing your2cents.
@vpbubbies Because the cans even with top&bottom cut out still make the airflow not go straight thru, can's narrow at top and bottom.Think about this, how much pressure do you want these cans and there glued(caulk)joint's to be under? With out fin's,you get better air flow with a smaller(quieter-energy efficient)fan.People show these high temps, but if it only trickles out it's not going to help you; strong air flow with 110 f temp is what you want. Not 220 f but with little airflow.
@vpbubbies About the cover,it is curved to make ti rigid, which makes panel harder to build and trim out but looks good.If you make it flat you may want to support the lexan(plexi)across the center.I think either way is the same efficient ,; ask me anything anytime,Im building #2 now; no fins,no caulk(cans are pushed together)inlet&outlet holes 5" are located in the center of panel(instead of diagonal).
Amazing. Thanks to all you guys who've done this I am officially going to do this. i'm thinking making 2 or 3 if the first one goes well. Got a question though...ever hear of anyone putting these on a roof? I got a south facing low slope roof on my kitchen that's just begging for this. not to mention these would also double as a kickass winter insulator...better than any known insulation...what better than an insulator that conducts heat for winter.
I don't see, is this a air heater or can you put water through it. Do you glue the cans to each other ? Why it the top different cut then the buttom ? Thanks (forward to less CO2).
I like, great video and it looks very nice on the side of your garage. You ought to put a fake door knob on the out side and see how many people go up and try to open it. Then post that video!!!!!!!!!!!LOL
Mine has reached 220(high as my meat therm goes)but thats with the fan turned off.when my 120cfm bath fan is running its pumping out around 110f which is what it should be running at or around.A lot of warm air is better then a little hot air.
no problems.but would not use fins next time, they just make you need bigger fan,and would locate inlet and outlet holes in center of panel, would make install on wall easier .
@my2cents0 Is the only reason you didn't use glass is the weight?..like from a sliding glass door (i have 2 of these given to me) they are separated into single and about 3/16 thick..i know they are easily broken and hail etc but i plan to use a tarp tied down to protect from hail storms and be careful when mowing and weed eating lol..what are your thoughts on using glass like this..maybe something I'm missing.
Has anyone thought of connecting a solar furnace like this to a homes current heating ducts? have the intake connect to the cold air return and the output connect to the output of the furnace. Have it set so that when the gas furnace is not going, the fans for the solar furnace are pumping air from the cold air return out through the heating vents throughout the house. And when the gas furnace turns on the solar furnace turns off.
could you please tell me the brand and size of the hole saw you used and some detail on how the fins were made/ thinking of not using them but curious-- Great video thank you ---John
im building a 4x8 panel right now and trying to figure out what kind of fan to buy. if you have any advice could send it my way my way please. im not sure what cfm fan i should be aiming for. also do you think 2 inlet holes would be better instead of just 1? thank you advance for your reply
what drill bit did you use i have all my cans clean tand ready just the bit i had sitting around is the right size. it just rips the cans out of the hold.
water4fuelh20,sounds like good plan,no holes in ur house, then in summer just turn around away from the sun.dont use fins just slows air flow, then u need bigger fan, also consider put fan outside then u wont hear it. hey enjoyed your concert,i play also :<)
the bath exhaust fanim using has a damper on it(most do).the pipe coming in were u see the 180deg has luvers on it(just took them out for the picture).got rtv 500 silicone, from wood stove section at local bldg supply.1"foam board w/foil facing,do not paint it,that will degrade it over time, and not let light reflect back to rear of cans.dont use fins, they slow air flow to much.
bitchin! I'm building one. did you install any check valves. I'm going to build a fanless unit too. what type of silicone did you use for the cans. what did you use to weatherproof the back. on mine the back will be just foamboard , it doesnt allow moisture through. nice unit . profesionaly made.
OK, OK as cool as the can heater is. My favorite part of the movie is at 2:25! I LOVE old skool choppers w/sissy bars! Put some mag wheels on and I'd buy it today!
OK ,OK check movie at 0:51 and look above pool table light, its made of junk metal parts.thanks for your comment! m fixing to watch your next video right now :>)
Nice video, nice music , nice job. I am at the point of painting my solar heater and have read about thurmolox and considering buying some. 2 cans plus shipping come to $47, that is a little steep for me. Why are you unhappy with it and suggest regular heat paint (other than price) ?
Awesome looking job and thanks for posting. Are you leaving both ends of the cans wide open? I did because I wanted the panel to breathe easily. I felt there would be enough air turbulance to "wash" the heat from the panel without further restrictions. Besideds it increases the static pressure in the panel thus decreasing the exhaust flow.
made them from side of can,but im not using them any more.they just make you need a bigger fan.also put inlet and outlet hole in center of panel, makes it easy to install, and better air flow.
Wow, this will save a lot of time too. Anyway, as the top and the bottom still have a side of some mms, the air will not flow too quickly, but instead have time enough to heat up.
I'll keep you posted on the progress of my furnal.
Thanks for the tips, I will check out the Hungarians too. I have seen about 10 different videos and each provides useful information. Here in mexico the sun shines so often that one should take advantage of it. Outside it is relatively hot, but inside cold because of the lack of central heating. This will change in some months : - )
Another clear instruction video, I am really happy with this information and your panel looks very professional.
One question: the fins, do you make them from the top or bottompart of the can? - and how do you secure them so that they will not get loose with the time?
sides are 1 bys(3/4"),back is 1/8" luan(underlayment),foam rubber window tape then screwed the tim on tight w/stainless steel screws, the trim i made on an aluminum brake.
just imagine rectangle black box with one hole at the bottom and one hole at the top. hot air goes up, so air flow will arise. can somebody explain me, why there are the cans?

Very good craftsmanship :(I don't know if i could pull that off i don't have any Wood/shop Skills...Sad but true:(
chalk246delta 2 years ago
Me neither. I think a solar heater can be made with just balsa wood and glass. =P

good plan!

water4fuelh20,sounds like good plan,no holes in ur house, then in summer just turn around away from the sun.dont use fins just slows air flow, then u need bigger fan, also consider put fan outside then u wont hear it. hey enjoyed your concert,i play also :<)

the bath exhaust fanim using has a damper on it(most do).the pipe coming in were u see the 180deg has luvers on it(just took them out for the picture).got rtv 500 silicone, from wood stove section at local bldg supply.1"foam board w/foil facing,do not paint it,that will degrade it over time, and not let light reflect back to rear of cans.dont use fins, they slow air flow to much.
my2cents0 2 years ago

Where do you get the snap disc controllers? What make and model/heat range do I need to get?
How about the fan, Will a simple bathroom exaust fan suffice?

were do you by the paint
lawndoc50 2 years ago
at the hardware,or homebuilding store, you need high heat flat black spray can paint, like for painting grills.
my2cents0 2 years ago
Nice video, nice music , nice job. I am at the point of painting my solar heater and have read about thurmolox and considering buying some. 2 cans plus shipping come to $47, that is a little steep for me. Why are you unhappy with it and suggest regular heat paint (other than price) ?
Yourbadnightmare 2 years ago
thanks, yes both ends open,a few fins in tubes just above air intake pipe,to keep all the air from going up the center.
my2cents0 2 years ago
Awesome looking job and thanks for posting. Are you leaving both ends of the cans wide open? I did because I wanted the panel to breathe easily. I felt there would be enough air turbulance to "wash" the heat from the panel without further restrictions. Besideds it increases the static pressure in the panel thus decreasing the exhaust flow.

Very Cool!
yardbirdrc 2 years ago
made them from side of can,but im not using them any more.they just make you need a bigger fan.also put inlet and outlet hole in center of panel, makes it easy to install, and better air flow.
my2cents0 2 years ago
Wow, this will save a lot of time too. Anyway, as the top and the bottom still have a side of some mms, the air will not flow too quickly, but instead have time enough to heat up.
I'll keep you posted on the progress of my furnal.

plz check out links under more info of this video, hungarians are really ahead of us on these solar heaters!
my2cents0 2 years ago
Thanks for the tips, I will check out the Hungarians too. I have seen about 10 different videos and each provides useful information. Here in mexico the sun shines so often that one should take advantage of it. Outside it is relatively hot, but inside cold because of the lack of central heating. This will change in some months : - )
321ozzy 2 years ago
Another clear instruction video, I am really happy with this information and your panel looks very professional.
One question: the fins, do you make them from the top or bottompart of the can? - and how do you secure them so that they will not get loose with the time?
Thank you in advance for your response.
