I hope we don't have another game 7 against Detroit for the 3rd time if we play them for the 6th time in the playoffs. If you guys can prove that you can beat the Red Wings 4 games to nothing let's prove it and maybe even do the same to DALLAS!
Detroit is the most consistent franchise in the league right now. Was this a huge loss? Obviously. But i'd take 4 cups in the last 20 years. Better than any franchise at the moment.
Well, can you really call it a big upset when one team that has never won a Cup or even reached a Final beats another team that had not won a Cup in 40 years or even reached a Final in 30 years? Some of the biggest NHL upsets: 1993 NYI over Pens, 1986 Flames over Oilers, 1961 Blackhawks over Habs, 1953 Bruins over Wings, 1945 Leafs over Habs, 1930 Habs over Bruins
@industrialsun This was a bigger upset because the Red Wings were the best in the Conference, and the Sharks were coming off the worst regular season in the history of hockey in 92-93.
@SgtHolton 1994 Sharks were infinitely more talented team than hideous 1993 squad: Ozolinsh, Falloon, Gaudreau, Irbe, & Whitney were not missing from lineup for long stretches like previous year & they had added Errey, Elik, Makarov, Norton, & HoFer Larionov. Plus, Wings made Conf Final in 1988 & Cup Final in 1995 but in between they only got past 1st round once & needed all 7 games & 2 wins in OT vs Minn to do that in 1992. Today this upset is not quite as shocking as 17 years ago.
I find it funny that sharks fans make fun of the wings even though the sharks have never gotten by the third round before. They pretty much lost to the red wings in 2011 since they almost blew a 3-0 series lead and had to win in game 7. The sharks are chokers in the playoffs every year except this year with the help of their golatender irbe who was very good. Yah detroit loses in the playoffs a lot when they are a 1rst seed but they always bounce back and do the better the next year.
@thuhcameron Doesn't matter. You win game 7, and the stuff is forgotten. How come people don't call the canucks chokers for winning game 7 against Chicago? they didn't lose the series.
@Vertigo2903 lol, I agree the Sharks have owned the Wings so far (they're 3-1), but the Leafs? No way! They won 1 series against the Wings in the last 47 years (93). Sure, they're 12-11 all-time against the Wings, but that won't change soon because the Leafs play in the East now, so they'd have to meet in the finals to face each other, and Toronto can't even make the playoffs. The Wings have 4 cups in 6 finals appearances in the last 16 years, the Leafs haven't been to the finals since 67.
You can't win it every year no matter how talented you are. You need talent, grit, determination, luck, and most importantly health to win the Stanley Cup.
Truly hilarious how Baker responds to the question about whether he celebrates the ten year anniversary of his series-clinching goal. Every night! "Kids!! ....." A cupcake and a candle.
Sharks could have made it to conf finals that year too. they were leading series against toronto 3-2 and in game six OT almost won it but hit cross bar.
@KaesoBrutus probably not the biggest upset in Wings history but it's up there. It's one of the biggest upsets in league history mainly because the Sharks started 0-8-2 to begin that season after finishing the 1992-93 season with an 11-71-2 record.
I've been a Sharks fan since their very first game, and I still remember watching this game like it was yesterday. I hope the Sharks can win the Cup this season!
Not a fan of either team, but I remember this huge choke job by Detroit that year. The Sharks nearly got past the second round as well before losing it in 7 games if I remember correctly.
@elzenmahn I can kinda understand why we booed, they had a losing record we were favorite, we were so angry and dissapointed with losing in the 1st round, we had to boo, but afterwards we've won 4 cups and now the sharks are considered the chokes of the NHL
16 years later tonight, the San Jose Sharks once again knockout the Detroit Red Wings in the playoffs. And hopefully this time it will lead to a Stanley Cup.
@mrceebees14 But the teams were still Red Wings and Sharks facing off and a lot of people predicted the Red Wings to win including Barry Melrose who predicted Detroit to win in 6 games.
@acetrain81 The RedWings were the OVERWHELMING favorites in 1994 they were picked to meet the Rangers in the finals that year. The Redwings are an ageing team that the Sharks were favored to beat in this series and the Sharks beat the snot out of them, so it's entirely different, Goliath defeated David in other words.
4 one goal wins and a blow out loss = "beat the snot out of them" ?
The Sharks, with their history, where anything but overwhelming favorites. The Red Wings may be slowing down, but it's a gradual decline not a drop off a cliff that you make it sound like, and with their moves the Wings can have a better year next year easily.
@KaesoBrutus Not talking about 1994, talking about this year.
Blackhawks for the win.
The Sharks are an example of the choke artists in the NHL. All of that regular season talent, dating back to the 1990's, and they choke up the big must-win games.
I think the biggest upset in NHL history was just shown. The 2010 Capitals losing to the Canadiens in the first round. That's the biggest #8 over a #1.
Team USA went 20 years without beating the Soviet Union at the Olympics, actually getting pounded by them. But they eventually did it again, and then won it all. the Sharks can certainly beat the red wings this year. they are also probably more prepared to handle the red wings than any other team in the league.
This is the best memory that I have of my beloved Sharks. They've had a lot of good stuff over the years. However, this was probably the biggest upset (in the Sharks favor) that the Sharks have ever had. Gotta love Arturs Irbe!
Let's go Sharks! Let's destroy the Red Wings one more time!
Wings were terrible team defensively that year. The next year they started to re-tool and put a new system in.
As for all the talk about Osgood having a good team in front of him when he won his Cups and what goalie won Cups with crap teams? While Osgood is no Roy or Broduer they didn't take teams full of 4th liners to Cup either.
Biggest upset in all of sports? No way. Team USA beating the USSR in 1980. Biggest in NHL? It's tough to say. It's probably up there though.
I remember this series very vaguely (I was a youngster and not really a fan at the time). I remember going over a friend's house to play some Sega Genesis (some great memories behind that too) and he would periodically switch it to this series when the games were on.
Detroit Red Wings, the most dominant professional hockey team, and arguably the most dominant professional sports team, to ever come out of the United States.
We owe a little to the Sharks, though. If Ozzie never cried after this game, we may have never started a dynasty in which we won Lord Stanley 4 times in 12 years.
@muska114 Yeah, and you're the master of not having a clue. I realize it's an obvious troll, but how could you call a team a choke that is in the finals every couple years for decades and wins them more than they lose. They might be the biggest non-chkers I could think of. They sometimes lose as the favorite because they are almost always the favorite...der.
It would have to be up there. Not sure if it's THE biggest one, but considering the Sharks were 11-71-2 the season before, it's likely the biggest upset in NHL history. IMO, it catapulted the Wings to the dominant team they've been in the last 15 years.
It's up there for sure, but as a Wings fan I wouldn't even call it the biggest upset in Detroit Red Wings history. Anaheim in 2003 is one for sure that's bigger, and there are others that have a strong case.
I think that the biggest upset in ALL of sports history has to be the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team beating the USSR. They werent even predicted to make it as far as Lake Placid. but they beat the best hockey team in the world and they won the gold. Kind of unfortunate to see pros in the Olympics just one year later
@schanderson no, it's up there but far from it. As far as hockey, the USA upset/Miracle on ice was better... it was a college team up against the Soviet Army. Of course they then had to go on to beat Finland. 1969 Jets Vs. Colts, Buster Douglas vs. Mike Tyson... Google "biggest upsets", there's some I have no idea what they are.
I remeber this series. I was working for the local TV station (KICU TV 36) that was televising the SJ Sharks all season. They just moved into the new San Jose Arena that year. They were not even given a chance to compete with the Red Wings. Seven games later they did the impossible. Baker's goal was the difference that game. Wow!
see if San Jose had been one of the first 6 teams in the NHL and the red wings hadn't you would be giving an excuse like "this is a young franchise and haven't been that good"
well that's the excuse for me, tho I am not a Sharks or Red Wings Fan, GO CANUCKS GO!
fuck you pal sharks Hockey is still more exciting to watch whenever the sharks have won the have kicked the living shit outa the wings they scored nine on them once
One of the things I remember from the 1994 Red Wings was the big trade at the deadline. The Wings needed a proven goalie for the playoffs, since Tim Cheveldae just couldn't get the job done and Chris Osgood was only 21....and all Bryan Murray could come up with was Bob Essensa.
Essensa went 4-7 in the regular season for the Wings and was a complete flop in the playoffs, meaning the Wings had to go to Osgood anyway.
This still is probably the biggest upset I've seen in hockey.
The closest I can compare this to was the 2003 series where Anaheim swept the Wings in round one. The Wings were the defending champs, had more experience, more firepower and a solid defense, but Anaheim pushed them aside without much difficulty, thanks in large part to JS Giguere playing out of his mind.
The 1994 loss forced the Wings to make big changes. They fired Bryan Murray, traded for Mike Vernon and started focusing more on defense. Since then, they've made 5 finals and won 4 Cups.
this team had great drafts their first years....pat falloon, jeff friesen and only a franchise for like 3 years when they did this....wow.....only in hockey.......GO FLYERS
What has Ozzie ever done with out a stacked Redwings team in front of him? Irbe was almost dominating at times behind sometimes less than stellar teams.
@SebastianSlasherMP led an Islanders team from 50 points the previous to a playoff berth with 92 points the next season he was there, and he had solid stats with his time at St. Louis under an average Blues team. Can't people say that about Fuhr either, he did all right after he left Edmonton same to Patrick Roy he had stacked players with Montreal and Colorado
@SebastianSlasherMP People who make this out to be like it's a rare playoff snauf by Osgood need to look at his play against the Avs in '96, his long centre-ice goals in '98, his meltdown against L.A. in 2001. He really only has ever played like a HOF'er in the 08 and 09 post-season but mostly the guy looked good with Detroit. With the Isles and Blues he was just another starter. If he gets into the HOF, it won't be until Barrasso is in first. Worst goalie with over 300 wins ever.
@SebastianSlasherMP Took both the St Louis Blues and the New York Islanders (both lesser teams than the Sharks) to the playoffs following his first stint in Detroit. Don't underestimate Osgood. He was a fantastic goaltender.
The Sharks have an amazing history of their own even without the cup.......

The 1994 loss forced the Wings to make big changes. They fired Bryan Murray, traded for Mike Vernon and started focusing more on defense. Since then, they've made 5 finals and won 4 Cups.

oh ok that makes sense, but how did the sharks come through to win in 7 games cause I did watch the Ducks series

But if anything, the Wings learned their lesson by not taking San Jose in this series. It made them more focus than ever to get to the Cup finals.

Irbe a legend? And how many cups did he win? Oh yeah, 0. While Ozzie has 3.
oldredbarnman 2 years ago
What has Ozzie ever done with out a stacked Redwings team in front of him? Irbe was almost dominating at times behind sometimes less than stellar teams.

@SebastianSlasherMP 10th in all time wins.
