@Alarus Em9:775777 Here is how I press F#m7(997999):press my middle finger on the sixth string, ring finger on fifth, index on fourth. And here's a tip for small-hand players like me on how to do this: Press these three strings first, forget about the rest; and make your fingers be as perpendicular to the strings as you can in case of touching adjacent string and you maybe need to flip over or push your left wrist outward.
And then, press your little finger on the rest of the strings.GL
I'm following TE for less than ten years now and learned a lot, very professional as he is, he is very kind! I wish I can see you in person! More power!
what he is doing is basically rolling the bottom 3 strings and skipping the other strings by using the thumb and middle finger, with the pointer as the point for harmonic. He doesn't really teach you much, because he expects you to know it. If you understand how a ii V chord prog. works, it's basically going around that, but with super tasty notes in there.
Phazur: yes, but even more difficult is coming up with combinations that sound good. Not all chords do and chords that normally sound good together won't sound very good with this technique.
@tradecycles as a tutorial yea not very instructional. but you can kinda see where he's going with it. just try to think to yourself "he's only human" lol.
After watching this lesson he doesn't sound convincing at the end when he says's, Take all that and make something better out of it..Its like paying 80 dollars for a ticket saying it comes with dinner and its chips and beans..Its saying if you didn't bring any blues with you well make sure we give you some to take home with..
@BeavisFriend2010 I got his "Emmanuel Labor" DVD and I have to say it's awesome, but very difficult to play. But with some dedication I think I manage that! Do you have the DVD too?? Got a question .. From which book are you talking about? Can tell me how it's called.. Would he awesome, thanks!;)
I bought his book which explains it perfectly. The guy's brilliant and 100% bullshit free. How many magicians reveal 'how' they do their tricks ? He encourages EVERYONE to learn to play and in doing so is not only a credit to himself and his unique and outstanding ability but to an industry filled with so much 'muso' snobbery.and nonsense.
To all the people who say this is "hard", "impossible to learn" and so on. If you knew you theory and did your homework, you would understand that he says something like "Let's take this Em9 chord. I'll play first 3 strings, then do harmonics repeating those 3". Obviously harmonics one octave up. Then he goes like 5th string normal, 3rd string harmonic, 4th string normal, 2nd string harmonic and so on. This creates that waterfall-like effect. Same with other chords he plays. And some variations.
Tony...your generosity in showing me how you do these miraculous things only make me want to jump off a cliff! Or drink myself to death, knowing I will NEVER be able to play anything beyong C, F and G7!!
actually he makes a very good explanation, no as detailed as many could wish, but it's just a matter of look closely on what he's doing, there are other videos where tommy explains this technique in a more detailed way
ok guys to digest this alittle bit for a better explanation, knowing the chords are going to be the one thing you need to know but he gives you a few. so heres how it works know how you can harmonic over the 12 7 and 5 fret. well lets use the 12th fret, posistion the chord you want and according fret the 12th fret up from each note of your chord, that will give you this effect. if you have any more questions or need an answer reply
"You can steal all you want" boy you've got it it more protected than fort Knox.. Only Ocean's 11 and Chuck Norris coud possibly take it :) Gotta love the grand master with a kind heart
@KuraiX im sorry..but i don't believe you don't know tommy emmanuel.....
best player on the planet...obviously it is just an opinion...but if you like guitar this guy is the man you wanna check out....incredible...im so glad i was told about him...C.G.P
@KuraiX He started playing when he was 6, and was proforming with his brother and sister at 9. If you are like me, we both have a long way to go... but a journey well worth the personal pleasure. That is why Tommy calls the hard work.. Emmanuel Labour. Which incidently is an instructional DVD that Tommy has recorded in 2008.
its actually not too difficult... though you wouldn't know it by watching this. his harmonic arpeggios are based on the principle of the harmonics at the 12th fret. basically you can trace shapes in harmonics up twelve frets from where you are fretting a chord.
@HillbillyJ in case u havent seen it already there is a second harmonics lesson tommy does where he explains it more clearly. that one helped me a lot. it should be in the related videos column or just type in tommy emmanuel cascading harmonic lesson and it should come up.
@Woodpig91 Okay, tell me what notes he's playing then! Why doesn't he even mention any positions or fret numbers? I'm sure I could work it out if I watched and went over it lads of times, but I don't care how experienced you are, working out relative chord harmonics just like that ain't easy.
You're not supposed to copy this and play it yourself. You should just grasp whatever you feel would suit your playing and then apply it to your songs. That's what I'll do at least. Cheers.
@mark1800 yea.. but it depends on what level you are on the guitar.. coz I picked up and I attempted everything he showed... wasn't has fluent as his though... but I didn't need any chord shape or right hand fingering for that matter... so I think it all depends
this is an old video. his hair has been short for quite a while now and doesnt look like this anymore. I saw him a few months ago and its short and styled so there you go.
Does anyone has a vid where tommy is sweeppicking?
