yea san shou is also a shaolin form of fighting. Its very popular these days coz it works . Thats why i learn it its very effective. And after all ,ALL shaolin monks use san shou for actual combat, the rrest are just forms to help u keep fit and flexible.
MY FRIEND NO ALL THE FORMS, ARE FIGHTING SCIENCE, THEY ARE ALL FOR ACTUALL COMBAT, THEY ARE NOT JUST FOR KEEPING FEET!!! ASK THE MONKS THEMSELVES THEY WILL TELL YOU, I HAVE BEEN TRAINED BY SHIFU YAN LEI IN LONDON.
@kftkft U serious? But thats what i heard, its to keep fit and flexible, not for fighting and stuff. But who knows maybe it is and maybe its not. But for now u keep dat to ur opinion and this is my opinion,se ya man. I still think its for fitness, never for fighting as u can see they dont do the forms in a fight (even in sahn shou) coz its not effective. Thats why they use san shou,to fight generally
alot knowledge is available to "us" is sufficient to make supermen but personnaly i need to go to shaolin to get beaten into taking it "that" hardcore...
honestly, if ur not a monk then your a lazy bum or at least feel that way, but if you are a, new, monk then you would hate the day you got tricked into going there
ps if you like shaolin, then what do you think of the book: Training Methods Of 72 Arts Of Shaolin?!
The Shaolin Temple in Henan, I believe, was effectively illegal immediately after the revolution. they let animals into the temple. The decision to make money was made in the early 90's, 'the temple must pay for the temple' that's why teachers like Shi Yan Zi and Shi Yan Lei left China to teach. Yes, they make some money, but authentic temple teachers don't compromise on quality, that's for sure.
i do choy li fut kung fu and we learn ground fighting techniques that came from 'chin na' the techniques are the same a jiujitsu and some that jiujitsu dont have (more dirty tactics, eye pokes etc) so in theory shaolin monks should know ground fighting but they are more a tourist attraction now rather than fighters ,thankgod for people like shifu yanzi and yan lei ! keep the true spirit alive
JiuJitsu schools that have a traditional system no doubt tell you about things you are able to do outside of competition, like "dirty tactics, eye pokes etc"
I am pretty sure he merged shaolin kung fu with Sanda( san shou). This is so bad ass. I hope he adds judo and jiujitsu to it. I wanna see how that would affect the whole martial art world. It would be so deadly. I think boxing and muay thai lacks the spiritual side of martial art. Shaolin influence will provide that and make the practioner more complete. mind, body and soul as one... I love the animal forms. It goes great with boxing and muay thai. Mix speed and power...Dangerous.
Boxing and muay thai (along with their illegal moves) are very effective self defense system. Judo, throwing people head first to the concrete on the streets can end fights quickly.
also their masters gave them permission to teach shaolin kung fu in the west ,if you knew anything about the subject you would know that before the shaolin temple became a shit tourist attraction and a way of generating revenue ,monks would leave the temple when they are ready to go and teach and spread the ways of shaolin
I wish they would practice traditional arts in europe with the same hardcore mentality as they do in the east. I wouldnt have quit kungfu if it was more like this
can you not find a suitable school in the nederlands? i think there is a shaolin temple school there . . .
also; surely you remember the forms and such - if not, why not get the d.v.d.'s shifu yan lei has, or any others from a similar website or something>? there are books too, and many styles of gung fu - including praying mantis, etc.
do any of these DVD's show basics like "The Maneuver of Ramming the Fist Vertically Downward Like a Pedistal"?

Sanda in china has been around in china alot longer than alot of people know. Traditionally every kungfu style had or has san shou methods.

why rely on the establishment - if you wish to train hardcore, then do it.
Yarwer 3 years ago
I started kickboxing right after I quit kung fu. I like the hard training, but I miss the forms and stuff

yeah I sometimes repeat the 2 forms I remember, but that starts to get boring after 3 years =P Books and dvd's are ok, but it's not the same
tonyvandemil 3 years ago
looks like you should go again then, train hardcore - and take it to the class; make them train hardcore also.
