They just took the basic idea and built their own story around it.

watch this and you'll see what i mean. The location has been moved from Neo Tokyo (an essential part) to New Manhatten, and will be "adapted" for american audiences. Not being horrible but maybe they're dumbing down the story for the retarded members of american society.

The death of yamagata is to show Tetsuo breaking free of his chains, first metaphorically and mentally, then physically, when he looses his bodily form and becomes the giant floating baby :)

It's all important and crucial to the story.

yes, but the live action movie(s) are being based on the original graphic novels, so if you're a fan of those thats good reason to be excited.

But they're going to throw in unneeded moments just attract different audiences. For instance, they will most surely have a sex scene in there, purely to attract hormonaly charged teenagers, and the lead character is most definately going be an american actor with little or no appreciation for the actual story. There will be a huge section added just to cater for the american viewer base, and this is what people think will ruin the film.
