Like the lyrics say "There are some who say there are so many things I need" but he chooses not to absorb so much of what he hears - he chooses to be content with himself and his life - and not believe the "Conspiracy of Happiness" - what other people think they need to be happy. It's a simple song of emotional independence.

well i was having trouble trying to figure out why such a sad song had all these happy people singing and smiling in it. then i figured it out... they are singing karioki(sp), which is pretending to be a star, something they are not. so it's just like the song... spelled out at about 2:45, or perhaps i'm just digging to deep. or perhaps it was obvious to every one else and i was just being obtuse?

I suggest you listen to these: "Days go by", "Reasons for living", "She runs away"

@giveafuckdont I just discovered him. I only new him before for the song, "barely breathing" and I passed him off as a one hit wonder. Truth is, after listening more, the guy is an amazing song writer with great melodies in his songs. You could be right about the meaning, who knows. I guess he'd have to say himself what he was thinking. A lot of artists like to leave their songs open to interpretation though, so they never tell what was behind the song.
