  • Let's be honest, it doesn't get much better than that. Completely changed my opinion of him. Fantastic stuff.

  • never mind what anyone says no one does it better. great stuff sammy

  • I saw this the night that it was aired on the Flip Wilson Show. I was a little boy then...WOW!!!!

  • Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 31 people are complete idiots.

  • Wasn't he in his 60's when he did. that jump.

  • one of the rat pack.....those guys originated cool. thank god for their talent

  • Is this the original?? if not who did the original??

  • I don't know if an Idol can be underrated but if they can then he is.

  • this makes me feel happy and sad at the same time...

  • Loved it!! Great entertainer!!!

  • man i miss my dog Bud so much - he was the greatest, he really was

  • Cynical, poignant parable of life down but full of pure poetry. Great interpretation of Sammy ...

  • Sammy Davis Jr. was a REAL musician! He was an artist through and through.

  • Seems like Sammy is Mr Bojangles...

  • Esta por demás decir que es uno de los más grandes artistas jamás vistos...

  • Simply amazing!

  • @agrowingtime You made a magnificent point about how Sammy and other singers from his era actually told stories with their songs. And although we were certainly fans of the singers, the song-the story, was what we loved most! After I read ur comment, I realized that I, too, felt the same way, but I just couldn't ever find the words that best described how I felt. You, my friend, did. Thank you!

  • Ho - ly- sh - it @4:44 !!!

  • what? he takes his hat off?

  • Sammy communicated the song...It was about the song. Today it is about the performer...the self-endulgent performer...who communicates their self-love message of "envy me" through the display of neurotic eroticism and outlandish freak shows (Lady Gaga- No thank you very much) to the masses of young people. 'Just sayin'

  • That's how you tell a story. str8 up.

  • @leostrats88,

I caught his show in Phoenix many years ago. Theater in the round, very intimate. Absolutely fabulous. But he blew it. He had the audience on their feet cheering. Problem was there were three more numbers in his set. You could see mentally kick himself. He did his last three and the audience never left their feet.

  • its christmas! thumbs up!

  • Song full of life suffered, lived, loved and mourned. Painfully beautiful ...

    Great Sammy!!!

  • ...he is so great and tall in this song !!! LES

  • WHAT A JUMP SUIT LOL

  • i can't watch this......this make me wanna cry for some reason

  • @Holloway6151975 IKR.! IT MADE ME CRY TO!!

  • @Holloway6151975 I would cry if not for my glass eyes

  • This man is a true star.

  • feliz cumple Sammy!!!

  • The moment he walked out, my heart hurt. So beautiful.

  • OMG!!! @ 4:44 !!

  • he was uncle tom and at point running with those honkies in the rat pack but end end you came around and marched in the civil right movement. no matter what he owned that stage.

  • @MrCalculus999 I thought Sammy was an uncle Tom too. Hangin with whites, loving whites & jews too much, getting involved in their freaky orgy parties, delving into satanism & judaism, which is worse than christianity .. After reading Why Me & Yes I Can and listening closely to his interviews it was clear that Sammy played a role. He was a showman. Sammy knew that it was jews who controlled show biz and his becoming a jew to make jokes about being a one eyed colored jew was part of the plan.

  • @BlackVoicesOnFilm Even his marrying the swedish woman for controversy. White women have always been used to send social & political messages. Being a black man in a white man's world he knew he had to have a good hustle goin & be the best of the best. In his mid age he got his ass with his species half. Sad that he died just as most child stars do--broke & in debt.

  • Classic all the way

  • my favorite note in the song is at 4:46

  • Watch the Jim Carrey impersonation of this guy it's hilarious

  • Sammy is the best!

  • Can you imagine being in that audience of the Flip Wilson show watching that? They were the luckiest folks in the World to see that live.

  • This man is one of "The Great Ones' .... Love this video AweSome Outfit he wears it well.

  • jim carrey does the best impersonation of him

  • Sammy was the dog's bollocks!

  • Mr. Davis cannot be compared to any other. He was in an Orbit of his one. As they all were from that group. They sparkled like the stars they were and still are.

Do not try and compare him to someone else, as there is no one like him.

    Stiglaa x

  • That costume is just wrong, very very wrong.

  • I love this song, I can feel the pain of mr bojangels loosing his dog. I will grieve for 20 years when mine dies.

  • I've been listening to this for three days in a row now.. He makes living look easy, fun and effortless, this man truly is a legend..

  • He really was the coolest.

  • nice moose knuckle

  • oh, Mr. Bojangles, why won't you come back and dance?

  • I could beat the hell out of the 26 people that didn't like this, LOL

  • In Scotland sammy is a entertainer who changed the world. Love him in everything he did and it was great to see his star on Hollywood boulevard if anyone deserved one it is sammy Davis jnr

  • Please can someone tell me where this performance took place and in what year? Thank you! :)

  • @ASTAIRESS I don't remember if it is 1972 or 73, but it's on the Flip Wilson Show.

  • Pure Class

  • Im young...and Im crazy about this song and this man! =')

  • Man I really do wish music was still like this today. I get laughed at by people for not liking a lot of the new age music scenes but can you blame me? The same mediocre crap being churned out. I miss talent!

  • @balletbubble2011 I'm 31, and I am old enough to remember the last 2 years of Sammy's life. I miss talent. The garbage today is not what's happening. People like you and me are ahead of the curve. The other 95 percent hopefully will wake up and see what they are being fed.

  • The Hines brothers, Ben Vereen, MJ, and Usher have all studied Mr. Davis and the Nicholas Brothers. This is why Sammy is one of the G.O.A.T.S.

  • THANK U MER DAVIS.. ALL THE ENTERTAINERS OWE U MUCH.. YOU ENDURED ..THINGS I AS A BLACK PERSON CANNOT IMAGINE ... YOU OPENED THAT DOOR ...RIP SAMMY

  • This man sounds like a BEST Friend to me when I was a child! Sharon Edmark

  • Obviously he is great performer and singer regardless, but was this performance a lip sync?

  • @revilogmail no in those days they new how to throw their voices and the stages where made to acoustically make them nice and loud man I miss the Vaudeville days and I wasn't even there.

  • 3 years ago my 7th grade teacher showed me this and i was breathless

iv always loved Sammy and this was just pure amazing.

  • that was really good it made me cry jk but it s still good

  • beautiful

  • Excelente interpretación, Sammy canta, baila y vive el personaje, un gran artista. Dios te bendiga Sammy, no entiendo nada lo que dices, pero me ha conmovido tu interpretación!!!!!!

  • Love this song, check out my swing bands cover!

  • I love you for all you went through as a entertainer... Just to share all the talent God gave you..I am Irish and German-Jewish, you let all of us say I'm me and you can like me or you can leave my life-but I am what God made me....i AM..So Sammy you and your talent love for your fans and you. Philillie USA

  • If I'd just find a matching playback I'd do the best I can to his honour and it would surely not be enough. Great man. Performer. Singer.

  • Best Song Ever!!!

  • Amazing. That was so great!

  • rodrigo lombardi ai tu mi quebra rsrsrsrrsrsrsrsrsrsrrssrsrsrrsr

  • You can argue all day long who the second best entertainer of all time is, but there is no debate who is number one... Sammy Davis Jr.

He didn't just sing well, he sold the song.

He wasn't just a good dancer of all forms of dance, he was a world class tap dancer... perhaps the best ever.

He could play a multiple number of instruments.

He could act, do impressions quite well, tell jokes.

Heck, the guy could do tricks with pistols.

Mr. Davis is THE CAT. And now packing the house in Heaven.

  • @tvphilo I honestly think entertainers from the 80s + and pre-80's cant be compared because of the technology that evolved later on. but yeah, him and the other members of the rat pack were the greatest. Other Amazing entertaineres like Michael Jackson wouldn't exist without Sammy DAvis Jr and the others.

  • @tvphilo and he can whistle like a god....

i wish i could whistle like him :(

  • @tvphilo Tap dancer extrodinare he was indeed. He was a big influence on the late great Gregory Hines who took the tradition of Jazz dancing to a new generation and in turn inspired the latest standard bearer, Savion Glover. But as for who is the greatest hoofer, that is debatable. Personally I consider The Nicholas Brothers as the greatest exponents of Tap, but Sammy is in great company.

  • @bolder2009 The Nicholas Brothers may well be the gold standard. Two observations: At his '60th Anniversary Celebration', Gregory Hines, so highly acclaimed that a movie was made for him to showcase his talent, performed on the show. Sammy got up and matched his talent. Not only was he over 60 he left the hospital bed to come to the event (he died a couple months after). Secondly, everyone else at the top devoted their lives to tapping. Sam invested less than half the time they did.

  • @tvphilo Yeah I know the footage you are refering to, and I agree. Sammy himself made the same point. Sammy said he was "the Michael Jackson of the 50's" as far as dance is concerned. If he had chosen to strictly devout his proffessional career to that area of his talent then we would have missed out on some of his other talents. Sammy's genius is that he could do it all. An exceptional singer, dancer, actor, multi-instrumentalist, comic. He's the Leonardo da Vinci of 20th Century Entertainment.

  • @tvphilo Very well said.I love you just for that.

  • @tvphilo

In those times most african americans had no choice but to perform in blackface as entertainment because they where considered inferior. The real "Mr. Bojangles died wearing tap shoes....wood on wood.......watch spike lee's movie "Bamboozled" ...brought a tear to my eye

  • @tvphilo abolutely agree with you

  • @tvphilo The words you speak have nothing but TRUTH behind all of them I personally cant wait to see Mr Davis performing in the heavens above!

  • @tvphilo I totally agree, although I believe that Sammy would even agree that Bojangles was the best tap dancer

  • @tvphilo no debate? are other peoples opinions not worth anything?

  • who dislike this song has no soul inside.

  • beautiful and touching.

  • Boy michael took a lot from him

  • One of the greatest :-)

  • he even WHISTLES like a God...

  • OMG I took in every word and every move he made. At the end of it I realized my face was tilted to the right a bit with eyebrows furrowed paying full attention to the guy. I cried man. OMG OMG I can't believe it! I cried to songs like these!!

  • In every profession there are those great ones that never make it to their fullest potential because of lifes issues. Be it sports or some other profession, those great ones that we celebrate will tell you that there were those who were better than they ever could be. Well, Mr. Bojangles is not a particular individual. He represents those entertainers who due to their being born during a time when they weren't allow to display their talents as men and women do today. So Sammy pays tribute.

  • Class

  • Oh man, the way he looks up at the camera and says "You see son, I drinks a bit." Brilliant

  • he's not nearly as hilarious as comedians made him out to be.

  • legend , nuff said !

  • Wow, now that is what you call a showman! Amazing!!

  • this song reminds me of Michael Jackson...pls Michael come back and dance....

  • i get goose bumps watching this. i remember seeing him perform in vegas. thanks for this video.

  • I love when he jumps up and clicks his heels.

  • This is when singer's actually had talent and it wasn't about the image.

  • Nothing else to say, other than LEGEND.

  • Like a boss

  • I give Mr. Sammy Davis "Baddest Mother Fucker Ever Jr., a one man standing ovation. Well done Sir.

  • Haha. When he says "baggy pants" he looks down at his in an almost mournful way as if he was thinking "I wish I had a pair". Lol.

  • I don't think those trousers are tight enough.

  • @5Keynote - I don't think MJ was around then..

  • What a class act.

  • 1:24 MJ inspired!!

  • This song makes me think of my dad. It bring tears to my eyes, because he could never express his feelings like this song does but he loved it.

  • Only a true performer can come out in an outift such as that.

  • Sammy is in my opinion was and is one of the baddest Mother Fuckers ever.

  • You have to be a dick to dislike this song. 24 dicks out there.

  • AAHHH !! Samy in his prime please can we get more entertainewrs like him if the modern wanta bees could have even 1/3 of his talent and love of proforming well then this world would truley be getting better thanks for posting this vid

  • Holy crap that shirts collars have a bigger wingspan than a B52 0_0

  • Thats glorious art!

  • As cornball as it gets. Where's the cigarette?

  • Think that the shadow on the spotlight behind him is supposed to symbolive the bars of the cell in the story?

  • Sammy Davis Jr <3 <3 <3

  • Sammy was truly one of a kind. He truly knew how to entertain and tell a story. Today's singers need to watch this to take a lesson on what performing is. Sammy was truly amazing.

  • Why can't I find his version of "sweet gingerbread man" anywhere, I been looking so hard.

  • waynes world 2 anyone =)

    thumbs?

  • this is one of the greatest songs ive ever heard.

  • Beat me with a stick, my feet are made of clay and we all can see how the demise of Yammy Freeseed has changed the face of music for everyone. Yammy has covered all genres of music and has sold out lounges across the States, I miss Yammy, I saw him on Arbor day back home while visiting my Ex-Wife's Step-Mother, the times were memorable, but if it wasn't for Bojangles, our son Granlomong wouldn't be here and my life would be a free world for me.

  • @TheTheeggmann You so realise what Mr. Bojangles is don't you? So you are saying that if you weren't in Heroin withdrawal, you wouldn't have your son? Well given you named him Granlomong, I can believe you indulge in the odd drug or two. I hope you find him a nickname before he starts school or I guarantee you the other kids will just call him "Mong" (as in Mongoloid) and be done with it. Harsh as that is, I'm a mother and girl with an usual name who knows how cruel kids were to me.

  • The very best version of Mr. Bojangles. I did his version of this in a variety show I was in and it went well but Sammy is THE MASTER. I bow to his level of performance.

  • NYYankeeFanInNJ .... Thanks much for that information. = D

  • What's amazing is that he (Sammy) was able to transcend the color line of his era and go places and perform where so many others could not. The only other African in America to pull off such a feat was Charlie Pride. DANCE Mr. Davis! DANCE!!!

  • Quite brilliant, nobody today to touch him, sinking a nice glass of red, sammy god bless

  • Simply put..A Giant !

  • You gotta love that outfit

  • You just cry at this great talent, really why is,nt there this kind about today? I think Sammy was the greatest! This was "timing" at it,s finest, watch those heels "click" to the symbol, wow! bloody wow! God rest Sammy. Love A fan Tony from Brighton, England.

  • Love this! =D Mr. Sammy Davis Jr., very underrated. Hey, what tv show is this from? Also, if you really like Mr. Davis, check out the All in the Family episode where he played himself. Classic - Sammy and Archie Bunker! (I think it's from 1972)

  • @peopleratrip I think it's The Flip Wilson Show.

  • needs some proper beats and a thumpin bassline

  • @Swaggs303 just in case you didn't know, you're an idiot

  • he did not write this song !!

  • @taylormpowell no he did'nt your right it was wrote by jerry jeff walker but who cares sammie sing's it so well and gives such a great performance when doin it. although i do like jerry's original version aswell i think sammie and frank both sang this great. :)

  • Wow, his music touches your soul!! He was very serious about is craft.......love it :)

  • This song is Amazing

  • Growing up in Brazil i always found this song so touching even though i couldn't speak or understand english. We were farmers and i had to move to a small town about 100 miles away to go to high school. About the same time, my only sister was terminally ill and every time i went to visit her and my parents, on my way back i'd hitchhike. One time, this big truck stopped and the driver asked me where r u going my son..i said next town. As i got inside the car, this song's playing...cont

  • Sinatra and Martin knew how talented this guy was and thought it a crime how blacks weren't allowed to be patrons in most casinos. So the whole Rat Pack got together and boycotted with this simple demand:

Either blacks get quality service like everyone else, or the Rat Pack doesn't play at your casino. Lo and behold blacks were soon to be allowed in just about every casino worth hearing about. Keep singin' Sammy, cuz we're listening.

  • Love it xx

  • The entertainers of today should aspire to be 1/4 as good as this man. This is how it should be done, even today.

  • He was absolutely the very best. So much talent in a small frame....singer, actor, impressionist, dancer, AND musician!

  • Fantastic. Nough said...

  • Thats so wonderful. Thank you for sharing

    Greetings from Bavaria

  • Bravo, Mr. Davis. Brilliant performer, the likes of which are rarely seen.

  • And Thats Life. Great Human Being, never been forgoten.

  • Twenty-four people's dog up and died.

  • the greatest ever <3 love him

  • One question. Why has Hollywood not made a story about this man's life? They are totally sleeping on this one. It would take a special actor to play him and a special actress to play his wife Altovise. A few requests, please don't get Jamie Foxx to do it or even Don Cheadle. Cheadle was decent playing him in that movie "The Rat Pack" but nowhere near good enough.

  • He was fluent...

  • I am a ballet teacher and have been trying to get the students to understand "feeling"

I played them this on my ipod and suddenly things have changed...........Thannkyou so much Mr. Sammy Davis Jnr. Forever the entertainer. From a grateful teacher!

  • saw him live singing this song...you could have heard a pin drop!!! awsome man...

  • Talent, handsome, class and the man knew what to do with a hat! Love him and his music. Truly don't make them anymore like this.

  • Mr Sammy Davies JR was by far the best entertainer this world has ever seen, he felt every minuet of the songs and sung them with feeling and meaning this song just show this all off

  • That was fantastic!

  • Tummen ifall du bara var tvungen att kolla upp vem Sammy Davis Jr. var efter du hört Movits! låt "Sammy Davis Jr."... plus att du blev lite paff över hans kläder :s

  • OMG SWAGG ON A HUNDRED TRILLION .. LMFAO

  • WONDERFUL MR SAMMY DAVIS .. TRUELY WE THANK YOU AS A BLACK MAN FOR OPENING THOSE DOORS SO THE ONES THAT CAME AFTER YOU DID'NT HAVE TO GO THROUGH WHAT YOU DID.. TALENT HAS NO COLOR....AND GREATNESS IS TIMELESS..REMEMBER SEEING THIS AS A KID IN THE 1970'S RIP.. SAMMY

  • His shlong is HUGE!

  • Does he really even need a belt to hold up those pants?
