maybe you haven't been "taught" by the right person....say that to those who express themselves through Handel or Beethoven or Monteverdi. Listen to the music heard through the mind of those who have written it for us, who are today privileged and talented enough to play it. Fag.
The mind? Music is about the heart not the mind. If you were taught to speak in the same way that music is taught, through writting, you would be forever silent in all probability. Which given the way you end your comment would perhaps not be a bad thing. The phrase "grow up" comes to mind. Those who express themselves through music that should be repeated with intellectual precision might be better off choosing a freer form of expression. One where things are not so precious, and with heart.
"If you were taught to speak in the same way that music is taught..." You said it all with that statement. I'm working on a paper on just this topic. We've done a disservice to the human beings we teach through the intellectualization of music. Music instruction in schools began as a way to teach people to read hymns and it evolved into a pseudo-conservatory atmosphere. In the end, we've alienated the vast majority of our students, who will never see themselves as a musician. Sad, sad, sad.

so true. Victor Wooten's "The Music Lesson" discusses a lot of the same ideas. Still it's so difficult to let it be so easy.

Playing the recorder is easy. Just pop in the tape and push the play button. ^_^
