  • This is great gospel music. When I was growing up,I didn't hear this type of "soul" music often enough. It has the power of the Holy Ghost reverberating from every phrase. True testimony from the killer vocal inflections. A tour de force!

  • I'm so gona find and buy cd's of her.

  • POWERFUL! I LOVE IT! I CAN"T SIT STILL AFTER HEARING THIS! WHERE HAVE THESE SISTERS OF GOSPEL GONE?

  • thank you for posting this BEAUTIFUL music

  • There were and are sooooooo many great gospel stylist. They each bring unique fire and feeling! There were many mothers and fathers of this sacred music. As well as kings and queens. ALL HAIL THESE SAINTS.

  • Aunt Dorthy there has never been another like you. I know you were standing at the gate to welcome your dear brother Fred yesterday 04/30/2010. The family will forever remember your smiles and laughter and songs.

  • Thank you Ms. Coates. You lifted me up on a very blue morning.

  • What a powerful song with a powerful message! Praise that strange who came by and saved me one night long ago. I live in his grace as much as I can to this day! An empty grave is there to prove my savior live!

  • love this song! nostalgic to an old church i used to go to.

  • Patty Griffin does a wonderful cover of this on her latest release "downtown church". Amazing!

  • I love it, I wonder where I could buy her albums, Nothing can get a hold of you like those old time gospel goodies

  • What year did she record this version of "The Winner"?

  • LORD this song is unbelievable! I thought I had head everything by this woman. I was looking at another video totally unrelated and this popped up as recommended. I didn't recognize the pic so I slept in ut for a few minutes but kept looking at her name and I clicked. I have a saying that YOUTUBE for me, is God in in disguise! And with that I see why "youtube" recommended this video for me.

  • We the people, Love you Mother

Dortohy Love Coates.I am just holding on & and the many others you have recorded, blessed our soul,Coming up as a child i understood your songs. We love you,Our Mother in Jesus Christ:, Your, Daughter in Jesus Christ, Deborah; You will be remember always in our hearts.

  • this song touches me a lot! simply great! Praise the Lord.

  • Wow shades of Mahalia Jackson!

  • she was one of the best, most soulful singers of any genre. first heard of her when the producer brian eno -- who has better taste in music than you might imagine by what he makes his money off of - was on a tear about her in about 1990. i immediately bought a compilation - and fell in love. just wonderful.

  • Wow, I thought my mom was the only one named "Carletta" with an "e" instead of an "o." Interesting.

  • @MoSvivor I ha ve a daughter named "Carletta"- 40+ years old - beautiful name.

  • Beautiful. :-) God bless.

  • surely, surely, this was a true warrior for the lord, i am so sorry that i never had a chance to meet this anointed lady of god , found out of her after her passing , if only i could have had a chance to meet her it would have played a big part on my ministry of singing, but her sprit shall and will live on through me and hope to see her in the home on high

  • I really love all of Dorthy Love-Coats music. This song was written by this great legend herself. As she plays and sings this song tears fill my eyes. She truly presents the loving kindness that resides in the touch of Jesus with this song. WoW!

  • i know the 'queen of gospel" is Mahaila Jackson... but she would have denied it after hearing this woman sing

  • I had the pleasure of playing for her along with her accompanist in the late "90s at the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses. What an honor I felt when she looked back at me on the organ and said "Who is this Lil' Boi who knows all our songs?" Thank God for Rosemary Griffin for taking me to the NCGCC.

  • man... you must have had fun... you actually heard her sing live... what of Mildred Howard?

  • I had way too much fun ...

  • I envy you that. I really love these Gospel pioneers that lived the songs they sang. There's such a deep, rich anointing on these ministers.

  • One more thing: I saw her at Jazzfest in New Orleans, '89. She probabaly could break glass with her voice. Half way through the set she did the James Brown thing with the fainting spell and being fanned and toweled off by a backup singer. Priceless. The real deal of Gospel.

  • Thanks for the post. Great song that is not easy to find.

  • I'm a Brit and in recent years years 'Black Gospel' has become popular in the UK. I have listened to Dorothy Love for over 30 years. It was difficult to get recordings of 'Black' artists in the UK. I had an LP 'vinal' with this song on it. She is still an inspiration; raw, raucus, sincere and devout - and a privilage to listen to.

  • I grew up listening to the Original Gospel Harmonettes and Mother Coates. They used to appear on a local program back in the sixties called Jubilee Showcase that came on every Sunday morning and we knew when Showcase went off to put on our coats and get ready to go to Sunday School lol. My godfather and her were good friends. I never had the honor of meeting her but she is still a part of my mentorship in gospel music, as are all the OGH.

  • Dorothy Love still around. She have a powerful voice.

  • She's been gone for a few years now, resting in Jesus.

  • Awesome gospel music.

What happened to this kind of heart and soul gospel singing?

  • it's too worldly now. lol.

  • @PurpleSnowman29 True gospel music is to worldly.

  • @wpwcradio I DON'T KNOW WHERE THIS TYPE OF HEART AND SOUL GOSPEL WENT TO.... BUT... "IT SHOUL-L-L-L-L AIN'T IN THE MOUTHS OF ANYBODY I HEAR SANG-G-G-GING NO MO!" (WHAT A PITY...)

  • @wpwcradio IT'S GONE!!!! GONE WITH THE WIND!!!!! NO TALENT OUT THERE NO MORE!!!!!!

  • Odessa Edwards is My Great Aunt

  • Odessa Edwards is my Great aunt

  • That's awesome. man, we're like family. I miss your your aunt so much, her and Aunt Dot were really close. May they both rest in peace. BIRMINGHAM RULES!!!

  • She doesn't have a son. Dorothy love was my great aunt, as a McGriff, I don't of any son, she had. If my aunt dot did have one, she kept it hid from the whole family. lol.

  • Thanks for posting. DLC has left a legacy. She was truly one of the greatest. Didn't know she had a son, but did know about the two daughters.

  • keys, Dot has played the piano since she was a little girl. Remember she played the piano for her childhood family group, the royal gospel singers back in early birmingham. She played some on her Nashboro records. She also later played on her album, City Four Square. But in the early days, she was always on the microphone leading songs and writing them. lol.

  • I didn't She played piano

  • Here voice is a musical gift to the world!

  • Darneloh, you're truly a comedian. hehehe. Maybe that's a talent huh? lol. You know you welcome. lol.
