Try & get your fish sized brain around this: I run a small business. I get deliveries on HGVs every day. My business is in Leeds. On the trucks I see goods for about 7 other towns & cities. That means my goods have probably been carted around 2 counties before arriving at my door. With a main distribution terminal in every town, goods would arrive by air, rail & canal & be distributed short distance (under 5 miles) by small vans.

A central terminal in every town where goods are then taken to their destination by light goods vehicles is far quicker & more cost effective. Look on a list of Britain's most dangerous jobs. Tankers drivers aren't even in the top 20. Soldiers, fishermen, construction workers don't get anything like the wage of a tanker driver.
