  • after watching this vid, i made a similar one of me drumming it, its a very fun lick because you can put almost any fill in there. too bad i dont have the money to match your recording equipment haha!

  • GOOOOD lesson!!

  • GrooveDrummin. Ian Paice played this lick at the start of Fireball, Live in Denmark 1972 video, except he used two bass drum instead of the hi-hat. He also used this lick in Made in Japan, on Space Truckin etc.

  • @livejamm69 Yeah right and it was on "Ludwigs". :)

  • thank you billy mays ;)

  • what i now have hard to do is the double stroke on my kick, (Black Sabbath war Pigs, when the hihat marks and then comes kick and cymbals in and mark with a double stroke), any tip on improving?

  • I hate this beat so much. Took me almost 2 hours to manage at speed like 50 bpm :D. Cool stuff though, thanks!

  • dang now i have 0 excuses why i cant practice

  • After 3 years, this is the best video I've found as far as explanation, example and execution. Thank you very much !!

  • well done

  • @GrooveDrummin When you have this big bass drum, I assume you tune it tight. So you cannot "Bury" the beater into the head without choking the sound correct? Here is my problem; I have ALWAYS played burying the beater into the head since I started. Because I tune very low, It doesn’t seem to interfere with sound. However, I just took the pillows out of my bass drum and I realized I have to stop doing this. Any tips to help me "Release" the beater after the stroke?

  • @MrMutron

Not too tight because it will be too bouncy then without a port in the reso. It took me a while to adjust also...think of your pedal like it is a drum stick...if you rest your stick on the head it will bounce and create multiple strokes, same with the pedal. Tighten the spring on your pedal and let it do the work.

  • hey dan your are probably the biggest bonham fan

can you tell me what size of cymbals he used at the album " the song remains the same " ?

  • @RubenVW95

    i think the lineup was:

24, 20, 18, 15 but some giant beat mixed in with the 2002, i believe the ride and the 20 were GB but i could be mistaken.

  • @GrooveDrummin really ? 18 and 20

i tought when i look to the video's that it was a 16 " but i will be wrong :)

    thank you

  • @RubenVW95

i could be wrong too but i don't really hear a 16" on the recording and too me it looks like an 18 and maybe 20 or another 18.

  • @GrooveDrummin ok thank you :)

  • what beats is the snare?

  • oh shit

  • АБВИОТУРА

  • This is the most fantastic thing EVER! :o) Its 10:30pm here so no drumming tonight but as soon as I get home from work tomorrow I am gonna try to emulate this. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom. You are an AMAZING drummer!!!

  • you're Great Drummer.

This partten was used in fireball by Ian paice, right?

I dont know how to play(4:25~last)

  • man you are like scary!

  • love your vids man how long you been playing

  • @superredneck71

cool, thanks for watching... since '74

  • I used to have a Ludwig kit, too, and I also used Pearl's Optimount on the rack toms. Cool. Great sounding kit!

  • it learned this...and if u put the 8th note on the left on the tom, and switch between the tom and any ride object...it sound sooooo cool

  • A true Bonham scholar!! Brilliant.

  • wow, you are a wonderful inspirational teacher. I wish I could play

  • @TheLedzep007

I'm not too sure, it is just the way I have always played. The mindset is to play for the song, keep it solid and steady and not to overplay. How you hit them also contributes to the "sound". Think of "pulling" the sound out of the drum not playing into it.

  • After 12 years with the internet as my main teacher I want to say that these are the best instructional videos I've come across yet! Excellent commentary & instruction and your drums sound AMAZING, thanks for going to such lengths to get this nice quality. I am subscribing for sure!

  • @RFRCR

Thanks a lot. I love hearing this!

  • you sir are such an inspiration to me :) a fantastic seasoned musician i love this traditional sound dude thanks again for commenting on my pedal vid btw :) i have a ddrum maple set up of these sizes cant wait to play live with it O.o wooh

  • @punkrockdrummer1990

it's great to hear you say that

  • Love the Pearl Eliminator pedals, I have the black ones with the red dots.

  • there wont ever be another bonham but youre the closest ive ever heard right next to the man him self you just have that same style and feel when it comes to the music

  • not to suck up or anything but i learned from watching you man i been playing for round 8 months

  • @filmskate14

Cool bro, I appreciate you tellin me this!

  • This really reminds me of like a ginger baker sorta lick

  • Keep the lessons coming Danzo you are a very effective drummer and teacher. This is a blast to play !!

  • This is a cracking lick ! But you scare me when you shout at me lol ;-)

  • Awesome!!! Thanks again for the lessons!

  • Sounds great :) It's handy to have someone dissect licks for you. As a beginner, I often struggle doing that for myself.

You explain it in a way that's easy to understand, thanks man!

  • Why do i feel like he's yelling at me in the beginning?

  • did john bonham ever use double base?

  • @kingoverat4

Yes, for a VERY short time when Carmine Appice got Bonham's Ludwig endorsement, his first kit had two 26"ers. Actually, I think it was only for a couple of rehearsals until Page said "there's too much bass drum" and you don't need a second!

  • So Kick ASS! Haha! Awesome! Thanks for the, "Esplaining"

  • i love your kit

  • i love it!

that base with the hihat and the bass drum is very useful when you're playing a solo

  • great!!

  • Thanks 4 all the videos man!

  • i like your shoes

  • Isnt this a 3 over 2 Polyrhythm?

  • @BCDPRODUCTIONS1234

Yes, you're correct. I know I said 3 over 4 (sounds different) because I wanted to make it more simple to understand to the non music reading player. 3 beats inside a count of 4 is easier to grasp than 3 inside 2...I may be off base here but it's only for simplification and so long as they play it right, that's what counts to me. But you are right, thanks for pointing that out.

  • @GrooveDrummin I knew it sounded familiar! It is indeed the 3 over 2. I learned it as the syllables "Not dif-fi-cult" where both hands start together on Not, and then alternate and sync back up on the not. (4 against 3 was "Not Very Di-ffi-cult") That is an AWESOME sounding beat. I must learn! Thanks for sharing.

  • Hey great lesson ! Is this groove similar to what Bonham plays in his 73' rendidtion of Moby Dick? After his timpani solo

  • Super lesson DZ. Thanks

  • Great lick, Dan! Any suggestions to put it in use in 4/4 context?

Btw, I found the timing of my upstroke kicks wasn't very consistent. After fooling around, I derived an exercise myself:

    FOOT: L R L R

    HAND: R L R L

    LH=snare, RH=ride, LF=HH, RF=kick

i.e. Feet are playing in unison with their opposite hands.

Wow, this is very difficult to get up to speed, harder than your lick... The opposite hands and feet don't want to go together. The bass always tries to slip back to the downbeat.

  • I love your lessons. Stuff i've been wanting to know for a very long time. Thanks for all your hard work.

  • ohhh, baby. it's cryin' time...

  • hey i have those kick pedals! pretty sexy stufff, also amazing lesson man

  • Is this the groove used by Bonham in Four Sticks?

  • @sasquatchpatch

yes, very similar just a another little section added and it's the same.

  • Great instruction on a groove I always wanted to learn. Thanks!

  • Love the way you explain things its AWSOME thanks....

  • is there a 20" GB in the middle ?

  • @rapad9

    20" Paiste power ride

  • @GrooveDrummin what is the hi-hat ? sounds great

  • @rapad9

Thanks, see my profile for complete list of gear.

  • Very nice and tasty lick! Thanks for posting.

  • @salemetro

    Thanks and you're welcome.

  • sounds a bit like Four Sticks, bet you got inspired by it =)

  • @guzylad5

    true!

  • Maybe you've got or about to get a Ludwig Vistalite Zepset?

  • @grajdrums

Love to get a set, but no plans on it.

  • great lesson learned alot . one small thing can teach you alot. Can u do kashmir? and break down the beats, like is it 2 bass drum beats or 1. thanks

  • Beggining to fireball almost

  • Do you ever get tired of hearing how awesome you are? Why you aren't playing in a big name classic rock band is beyond my comprehension!

  • @WhyTheHorseface

Very motivational to hear good things for sure!

Did gigs in the past and toured, not huge names or anything but played plenty of shows. I took a break from it all because of how disappointing new bands were and what music was evolving into, IMO. The politics involved in the business didn't help either and was only about making money.

Now, I am focusing on trying to teach aspiring drummers things I found to be effective techniques and methods.

  • i watched this video so many times. i love how you go really slow so i can watch exactly you are doing! 3:27 - 3:55 SOO TOUGH!. its hard! left with right foot and right with left foot you know? like X. good for mind telling the muscles to do. tuff!! i wish im good drummer like you and drummers out there!

  • @deafralph

I am happy to be of assistance...yes, the muscle memory is half the battle.

Thank you and great to see you're still watching!

  • Sorry, in the last comment I meant to ask if you play the snare on 1 and the upbeat of two or on two and the upbeat of three.

  • @GreenDrummer26

snare downbeat on 1 and the upbeat on 2 &

  • Hey man first I want to say I think you're an awesome drummer. Do you play the snare on the 1 and the downbeat of 2 or do you play it on the 2 and the downbeat of of 3? For some reason I seem to lose count when I watch the video. Thanks for posting the videos. Bonham is one of my inspirations as a drummer and these videos really help.

  • @GreenDrummer26

    Thank you for watching!

  • Damn, I understand it perfectly, but yet it is really difficult to lead with the hi-hat, I always shift it and after a while I find myself playing lead with the bass drum. Any suggestions to develop the left foot lead? Maybe just practice it by it's own, with no other drums?

  • @grajdrums

Try keeping the hi-hats steady on time but less on the bass drum, for example every 4 hi-hat beats do a bass drum on the 3 &...experiment. Keep a metronome going to lock in the hi-hat and make it easier to follow.

  • @GrooveDrummin Thank you, much appreciated.

  • So ...it is basically a single stroke roll with the feet...right...?

Right left RLRLRLRLRLRL then the figure on top?

Forgive me sir knight... Im a tad slow. But once I got it look out.

  • @AldridgeHalenFreak

Yes, that is correct and the trick is to start with the left foot and keep time with it. The right foot is on the off beat, that's what gives it the feel.

  • Great lick

    Great playing

    Great drums

    Great teaching

    Great job :)

  • What model supraphonic 402 have you got? is it 70s , 80s or new?

  • @scott111193

this one was made in 2007

  • Hey Dan! I just have to tell you that you are an incredible drummer and your videos have been a big help to me. I thoroughly enjoy your playing. Thank you so much for all the work you put into these videos, and please keep them coming!!! I love your kit man, it sounds so Bonham-esque. I have the Bonham Vistalite reissue with the 402 Supraphonic (42-strand). Thanks again man!!

    Rob Basso- Fredericksburg, VA

  • @robhgtc2005

Hey rob, nice kit you have, congrats! Thank you so much for the kind words and support. This is what keeps me going :)

  • keep in mind there are no linear notes (NOT on the same beat), everything is played on same notes... first snare lands on the same beat as floor tom and the second needs to land on the same note as the kick.

    Thank you and you're welcome!

  • Thanks I just got it. Awesome lick very cool !!! You rock !!!!!!

  • john bonham? these are awesome videos man

  • YES

    Thank you

  • Thanks for breaking this lick down... I've been doing it for a long time and didn't realize what it realy was ..until you explained it! Like most drummers, I want to play everything too fast and don't understand what the hell it realy is! Your Drumming and Teaching kick ass... I hope you get time to break down "I Cant't Quit You Baby".

  • beautiful ! your teaching skills are clear and to the point. thanks for the lick.

  • my first teacher taught me this

is a good exercise to start with triplets.

I do this a lot in my improvisations and solos

    good work !!

  • Moby Dick live, just after the tymp part... exactly,

  • Phil Collins made up EVERYTHING. =]

  • 100% awesome!!! I love the your Ludwidgs! Sounds Great!!!! Nice job....

  • thanks dude, i still can't do it though lol

  • I'm gonna say BONZO + Moby Dick = The Song Remains The Same! Let me know if I get a Prize ... or not! ^____=

  • Ginger Baker on his solos do this...

PD: nice shoes and five stars

  • Dan, I had requested this a couple of months ago, you just made it easy for me to play!!! Much gratitude, Thanks, Brad

  • dan great lesson thank you!!!!!

  • I would guess Ian Paice.

  • yeah, its sounds like Fireball's intro

  • great lesson !!!! thanks a lot dan!!!!!!

  • this is awesome man, do you think you could do a tutorial of the The Crunge? thanks alot

  • i'm gonna guess bonham. moby dick?

  • It would be cool if you broke down the licks at the end, starting around 4:25. Maybe for the next video? I learned this basic lick way back when I took lessons in the early 90's. I had forgotten about it. I need to dust it off! Thanks!

  • 5 stars!

  • That's really nice lick, drumset and sound!

    Thanks for posting.

  • Super teacher !

  • similar to jb in 'four sticks'.

  • sweet lesson! its too late a night for me to try this now, im gonna work on it tmrw though, thanks dude!

  • You should definently make a turotial DVD you'd make thousands

  • Sounds like one part of Dazed And Confused live

  • THANK YOUUUUUUUUU!!!

  • your sound is almost identical to bonham

    awesome!!!

  • i know it john bonham but not too sure the song, "four sticks"? possibly?

  • I actually just started to get into this.

I like to do "his" triplets, then go into this, out of this, etc...

  • Smooth, nice!

  • Amazing !!!

man you should make a tutorial dvd, i would buy it right away

congratulations, i love watching your videos

  • Plain brilliant. Being used to playing most in 4/4, I tend to have the kick at 1...very hard to have it on the upstroke at 3/4, so something to work on...great video!

  • This is like one of the best lessons on youtube! Burn expert village...

  • awesome!

  • you have no idea how much i appreciate your videos. i can't even begin to thank you. if i ever reach fame and glory... you, bonzoleum, and joedrums1 will get a personal 'thank you' from me and a big, fat check in the mail. back to this video... this REALLY helps a lot with my limb independence and with my rendition of Moby Dick. THANK YOU!!!

  • You sir, are amazing.

  • Saying the drummers name could be considered fair use because your using it in an educational way. Look up "fair use"

But yeah this lick came natural to me. Probably one of the first I learned. I'm guessing bonham too

  • beautiful tutorial

  • brilliant, thanks!
