  • thats great time lapse video and awesoem music for it

  • YAY!

  • im sorry but i just couldnt stop watching the container on top of the switch as it moved from one side to the other slowly lol

  • @reesk92 lol - that was Dilbert sitting at his desk. I meant to move it every minute or two but I nearly forgot about him altogether....

  • the first part was done in 2 hours? nice :)

  • If the closet had multiple vlans the video would suck anyhow. Nobody wants to see someone document "fa0/1 on vlan 666 goes to this jack ID" 200 times. They wanna see someone rip patch cables out and make the new stuff look clean. And besides, forklift upgrades are the funnest cause you don't have to worry if the ceo is on the wrong vlan...

You should have been wearing a gorrila outfit benny hill style!

  • hey did you disconnect a fibre unit? it looks like you've got one of those allied tellisys rack units for media convertors...the orange cables...?

  • good eye! yup, that was an allied tellisys fibre unit. We have a fiber link between the two buildings so there was another one on the other end of it (small closet at the end of the video)

  • heh thought so. I recommended one of those to replace our individual M/Cs, and helped configure it.

In the first half it doesn't look like you reconnected it though?

  • how many vlans? :). I did a 432 port upgrade with about 8 vlans spread randomly... that SUCKED!

  • luckily there were no VLANs, it was all a single IP subnet believe it or not, just mostly manual labor that night...

  • like a one day job done in about 3 minutes speed up

  • i have always wondered, and i dont think ill ever find out but... HOW THE HELL DO YOU REMEMBER WHERE GOES WHERE?!??! THEY RE SO MANY! THE"RE OVER 9000!!!

  • The placement on the switch port doesn't matter but the patch panel port has a unique number label that matches the port number label at the other end of the cable in the cubicles or offices way at the far end. Does that make sense? ;)

  • By numbers. We just match numbers. That's all! Simple and easy.

  • i guess =D Odd how my comment got thumbed down tho >.>

  • you put labels around the Ethernet cables and labels above the Ethernet ports

  • thats a very cool comic-effect when u walk down the stairs with the cam!... cool vid

  • thanks! I actually did it from the linux command line using image magick's charcoal effect.

  • what camera did you use?

  • I used a Canon EOS 20D DSLR and the EOS capture utility. I think the lens I used that night was my Russian Zenitar fisheye lens.

  • oh yeah... just whent through that a week ago.. just a lil more panels and switches... If nightshifts were'nt that well-paid i'd probably never get to swap any hardware.. hehe

  • hehe cool vid

  • Is there a certain port for each specific cable?

  • We only enabled the ports on the patch panels for rooms or cubes that were actually occupied, but it didn't really matter which ports on the new switches were used.

  • How do you get into a job like that?

  • The network switch install was just an upgrade of our infrastructure and really only happens once every five years or so. Otherwise my job is comprised of standard computer/network administration stuff that's not nearly as hands on.

  • what was the name of the song and who sings it? I love that song

  • The name of the song is "Original Prankster" by The Offspring.

  • Good move to stick with using wires.

New cable colors are miles better.

  • I feel sorry for those guys.. Unless they are responsible for that rats nest to begin with. Keep a clean rack.. It's not that hard.

  • what, sounds like nou never tryed to clean a Rack!

unless you have the budget to buy the expensive cable organisers for those racks, it IS pretty hard to keed claean!

  • I wish I had this job lol
