@billyez he was not captured by the cylons, he willingly fled new caprica with the cylons in the exodus, he fled because no one else would take him and going with the humans was a sure death sentence, but he regretted going with the cylons because they have no need for him, he wears flesh and bone, they live whilst he dies, cylons dont respect human life and would kill him the moment he is of no longer use
But In his mind, he believed he was captured, because he "had no choice!".
A more strong-willed Baltar would have been working on a way to destroy all the Cylons before he helped them destroy the last of the humans & they didn't need him anymore.
Don't think he could've found a way?
Perhaps that is what happened to the Cylons in Glen A Larson's Battle Star Galactica (Or, perhaps Lord Baltar's fate was the Cylons got him first).
I love how McCreary comes up with music that's not even like the other songs like Storming new Caprica and at the same time, sounds excellent. Love the variety.
for me this is the most memerable and my favorite score out of all of the amazing tracks from bsg, whenever i hear it i think of a lone man (gaius) drifting through space with nothing left in the universe other than machines, and i think this score represents his state of mind and his thoughts, it's truely well crafted
interesting the way the cylons are compared to the humans, all they want is violence , to kill the humans, but they are so cool and collected about it, opposing are the humans who only want peace, but are more outwardly violent and emotional than the cylons
This is a straight rip off of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. One key difference with an additional key every twelfth note, bit this is Beethoven with some Tchaikovsky influence in C minor.
@ColonelEvansSFMC I'm pretty sure it was meant to be that way. Battlestar Sonatica is in B flat minor, inspired by Moonlight Sonata, which was originally written C# minor. It is not a rip-off, but more of a spin-off or a variation. C:

@ColonelEvansSFMC In an interview Bear McCreary stated that the producers wanted a Moonlight Sonata-like piece for the scenes. Bear played it out himself and modified it to fit the mood.
@ColonelEvansSFMC Yes, my piano teacher likened it to Moonlight, but this is much different in its own way. If you've watched the show (which I'm assuming you have) it has MUCH more meaning.
The music for this is the best music I have ever, ever, ever heard. I listen to a shitload of music. But nothing - nothing! - can compare to this. It's insane how talented he is.
@28Crimes Then you don't listen to piano music very often. This is fantastic, one of the best, don't get me wrong. But I've heard similarly epic piano songs before.
ii have to agree firefly was amazing and i did watch babylon 5 for a few years when i was yunger but nothing iv seen in the scifi world has compared to this the plot the twists the acting the music everything just blows your mind. this show will never be forgotten and it will be very very hard to top with anything.
@deathrider217 my opinion, Fierfly had better acting but theres nothing bad to say about BSG either, these are my 2 all time fav shows. Firefly hits hard with good humor, unique wild west-sci-fi environment, amazing acting (Joss Wheedon really knows how to entertain ppl and he chose the right actors). BSG on the other hand is a space opera with strong main storyline, excellent acting and character developement, really good CGI, marvelous music. BTW come play BSG Online...
This piece is so complex, constantly shifting into other scales, and different rhythms. Few modern composers can do that as smooth, and seamingless as McCreary. Beautiful in its complexity.
I just had the most horrible day on my game server. People fucked shit up, and the host didn't know what to do, so he removed my privileges somehow. I'm pissed shitless since he cannot be reached by any means. The only thing stopping me from raging out is a box of chill pills and this piece.

@emiljose15 I had to re-listen to the 1st Movement of Moonlight Sonata and the pacing and key is roughly the same, but I suspect I've actually heard a song much closer to this song, than Moonlight Sonata. It's spooky because like the last 5, I've kinda got myself into that 1/2 remembered song queue that I can't get out of my head. I suppose it could be worse, it could be a queue involving some inane pop tune.

@AphoticCosmos I thought BSG did a great job but for a great 5 year story, with an incredible universe, sometimes cheesy but still great acting check out Babylon 5!
@AphoticCosmos Too bad they didn't end it after season 3, it would last so much longer and people would never forget it. Fourth season kind of casts a shadow on the whole series. Just look at Firefly, people love it even with (and especially because of) its poor lenght. And compared to BSG it's like a cheap cartoon! BSG is without question the top-end of the sci-fi genre. If there's ever gonna be the end of mankind, I'd imagine it like the end of Caprica. That pilot movie was beyond realistic!
Truly an amazing piece. It sets the mood of the base ship scenes so wonderfully - enchanting and yet at the same time almost creepy. And totally evokes Moonlight Sonata for me, which Bear indicated he was trying to do (I believe Ronald Moore had asked him to compose something similar). Any other piano works similar to this one, anyone?
this music works well with the gracefulness of the Cylon design...even the new Centurions are all smooth angles, as well as the Raiders, and to a lesser extent, the Heavies...the Cylons are graceful, as is this song
from now to 15 years in the future something has to be done that is associated with BSG a remake, a movie something!!! actually scratch that you cant beat the show the actors and story and music are too good they cant be trumped
That was the one that got me too! After that piece I started buying BSG albums and it was totally worth it. Bear is the man and im so glad he's stil doing the music for multiple tv shows!
As it has been said before, this show was robbed and never was formally praised for its masterpieces. The award companies, for example, the Emmy's should be completly dissapointed in themselves. Though, the only important achievment that Bear McCreary did was making us never forget these selections.
@DominoGray I think that was obviously implied by the name. It is meant as a tribute I think. Not that I'm disagreeing but I think McCreary was attempting to just make something that sounded similar with Battlestar themes thrown in.
lol for a minute I thought I heard the Caprica melody. This is very similar to a song that played one the first season finale of Caprica, which was basically a piano version of the main theme in this style.
It's not a coincidence that this is called "sonatica"... when I heard it the first time I was immediately reminded of Moonlight Sonata... it seems that this may have inspired the Sonatica song... of course Sonatica has more dissonance... but it's hauntingly beautiful.
Agreed! I have always said that this is quite possibly one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. I play it for some of my friends, and they can't believe that it comes from BSG!
Simple and beautiful! heh, I remember the scene to this piece where Baltar is on the baseship and comes across a nude Sharon doing tai chi. He's like "um, sorry for intruding..." Thanks Bear for your genius!
its based off of moonlight sonata in fact bear was considering using moonlight for these scenes but went against it because he thought not using an original would wreck the show musically
Actually, I think the title battlestar sonatica refers to the similarity to Beethoven "Mondschein Sonate" Listen to it, it's quite similar. So in fact, one of the great composers DID come up with the idea before :)
@AnnMegFair I would agree. I can't help finding it sounds similar to Moonlight Sonata. It even has a comparable composition, the continuous strokes in the low sounds with the occasional ups and downs in the higher tones. But it is sufficiently different to stand out on its own. The acceleration at 1:30 reminds me more of a classical movie theme.
from left to right, Jamie Bamber, (in the background) Katee Sackhoff, Edward James Olmos, James Callis, Mary McDonnell, Grace Park, and Tricia Helfer.
Most scenes in the episode 3 with Baltar on the Baseships , begin with this music with a view on the baseship itself. With this music and with the shape vs movement of the baseship it seems almost a ballet.
This piece of music is played when Baltar is captured from New Caprica and is in Isolation. The music fits so well. I would love to hear it live! I have all the music memorized so if anyone needs to know where a piece was played, hit me up.
his work is great...truely a ice scualputer for the ears.....perfection to listen on a cold winter night in begas over looking the mountian .....looking into night sky as one looks deep within them slef and the inner mind and psyche.
BSG is an awesome show...wouldn't mind meeting some people from the show. They still meet up and do signings?

Truly an amazing piece. It sets the mood of the base ship scenes so wonderfully - enchanting and yet at the same time almost creepy. And totally evokes Moonlight Sonata for me, which Bear indicated he was trying to do (I believe Ronald Moore had asked him to compose something similar). Any other piano works similar to this one, anyone?

this music works well with the gracefulness of the Cylon design...even the new Centurions are all smooth angles, as well as the Raiders, and to a lesser extent, the Heavies...the Cylons are graceful, as is this song

As it has been said before, this show was robbed and never was formally praised for its masterpieces. The award companies, for example, the Emmy's should be completly dissapointed in themselves. Though, the only important achievment that Bear McCreary did was making us never forget these selections.
NFDinatra 1 year ago 3
Never nominated for an Emmy for music? This show was robbed, every single season has brilliant work in it.

This isn't just similar to moonlight sonata. This is moonlight sonata played in higher notes and a few interjections to make it seem different.
Anyone doubting this just listen to the into to this song and then moonlight sonata. It's beautiful, but only because Beethoven made beautiful music
DominoGray 1 year ago
@DominoGray I think that was obviously implied by the name. It is meant as a tribute I think. Not that I'm disagreeing but I think McCreary was attempting to just make something that sounded similar with Battlestar themes thrown in.
Tuco83184 1 year ago
lol for a minute I thought I heard the Caprica melody. This is very similar to a song that played one the first season finale of Caprica, which was basically a piano version of the main theme in this style.
A7XRules4life 1 year ago
It's not a coincidence that this is called "sonatica"... when I heard it the first time I was immediately reminded of Moonlight Sonata... it seems that this may have inspired the Sonatica song... of course Sonatica has more dissonance... but it's hauntingly beautiful.
snowguy716 1 year ago 3
I notice that with a lot of Bears' music, it sounds similar to his other works, but this one is by far very beautiful, wouldn't you say?
JamesBondMan100 1 year ago 2
Agreed! I have always said that this is quite possibly one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. I play it for some of my friends, and they can't believe that it comes from BSG!

I love the sublte expression of the Baltar theme at 2:36
Arkalius80 2 years ago 3
Simple and beautiful! heh, I remember the scene to this piece where Baltar is on the baseship and comes across a nude Sharon doing tai chi. He's like "um, sorry for intruding..." Thanks Bear for your genius!

great song, its such a classical piece, wonder how comes any of the great composers did not create this piece before? Enjoy it
sg1MALP 2 years ago
its based off of moonlight sonata in fact bear was considering using moonlight for these scenes but went against it because he thought not using an original would wreck the show musically
JCDenton04 2 years ago 5
Actually, I think the title battlestar sonatica refers to the similarity to Beethoven "Mondschein Sonate" Listen to it, it's quite similar. So in fact, one of the great composers DID come up with the idea before :)
AnnMegFair 2 years ago
ah, just saw that there was a reply stating that before :) Sorry for doubly posting.
AnnMegFair 2 years ago
One word: masterpiece.
The deeper and more complete knowledge about BSG main idea, the stronger is the feeling...
SVKBizarre 1 year ago
@AnnMegFair I would agree. I can't help finding it sounds similar to Moonlight Sonata. It even has a comparable composition, the continuous strokes in the low sounds with the occasional ups and downs in the higher tones. But it is sufficiently different to stand out on its own. The acceleration at 1:30 reminds me more of a classical movie theme.
