  • my back hurt so bad that I could not even pull myself on that bar like that.

  • thats a awesome set up. does it really work?

  • Yes it really works. It's just decompression using gravity.

If I didn't work I wouldn't have done it, and I wouldn't have bothered sharing it with the world.

It's not for some people, and it would be wise to find out why you have back pain in the first place.

For me, I have moved to an inversion table because an upper back injury whilst motorcycling made it too difficult to swing up on the bars.

  • the title should have been the easiest way to break your backbone

  • that def decompresses the lumbar spine but the risk isn't worth it, agreed!

  • I use my daughter climbing frame and hang just by my arms if the pain is really bad and by my knees when I can.

  • So where do you get that equipment? and what is it called?

  • I tried chiropracty, massage, epidurals, exercise, etc. If you have low back pain, mid-back pain, or whatever it may be, there is a really great read called "Healing Back Pain" by Dr. John Sarno. It conveys the most Responsible Content on the matter that I have ever come across and is NOT "about" anatomy in general. You can google his name they probably have the book at your local library. P.S. I've had 2 discectomies in the past - didn't know better, and...yeah, it's a really worthwhile read.

  • Ive been doing inversion for 10 years now, and Im not dead yet!

I'm not saying it is a cure for everyone, but whenever my lower back plays up, a good inversion session helps loads.

Ive now developed a way of twisting whilst inverted, which improves my range of motion quite well.

  • No sense in killing yourself..... get an inversion table! They range anywhere from $99- several hundred. So much easier and more fluid motion. You're not going to get a hernia getting on or off of it.

  • My pain is lower back and I feel it safer and more affective to hang from my waist down - even though a dpctor told me traction would not work.

  • well if you have a prolapsed disc how the hell are you going to climb that thing. i dont recommend it. if you fall you will have more than a slipped disc. infact you may never have back and neck problems again so everybody have a go. lol

  • where do you get the shoes?

  • i have a double prolapse disk problem and i used to hang upside down for 20mins twice a day takes a little getting used to but it works by opening the space and allowing the disks to rehydrate. that was ten years ago I just do it now and then when i feel my back twitch.

  • damn i can feel the freaking stretch..dancing has killed my back..i over used it.. lack of rest.. =/

  • holy shit.... poeple!!!! if you want to do this, make sure your set up is A+... If those wall mounts come loose, you will no longer have back pain as you won't have any feeling from your neck down

  • You can't see it from the video, but the bar ends are in recesses cut a half inch deep into the door frame.

The last thing I wanted was to drop on my head!

  • hahahahah

  • this will kill you!! I heard of people dying from doing handstand because too much blood to the head. HANDSTAND!!!

  • I bought an inversion table to try to help my back...it didn't work. So i gave it away. six months of inverting didn't do jack. Actually felt weaker in the lower back because it took the load off and when I stood upright again, I could REALLY feel the painful spot. And yes i was relaxed for at least 20minutes each time. It takes a bit to relax, but eventually I get there. I hope it works for someone out there.

  • 30 minutes? too much blood to the head.

  • I thought the same thing...about too much blood going to your head...I thought you might get a stroke, God forbid, if you let that much blood go to the head!

  • i have a question...when you hang upside down...does too much blood go to your head?

  • No, not really.

  • I used my inversion table and my sciatica got worse, maybe it works for some ppl?

  • So, that second bar at your knees took away some of the weight so your ankles didn't hurt? Or was there something more to it than that? Also, when I hung upside down one time it really hurt my lower back afterwards, and yet I still crave it - was it the same for you initially? I am hoping if I do it every day it'll feel better.

  • The lower bar was purely for the purpose of getting in position to hook my feet on. Once hooked the lower bar just touched the back of my knees, but supported no weight.

With regard to aching lower back afterwards, I think this is due to you being tense. Once you get to relax in the inverted mode, you should find it removes the pain in your lower back... it does in mine (although I use an inversion table now due to an unrelated upper back injury)

  • Maybe it was the jerky movements of the motorised winch that caused my pain as I was raised and lowered. Or maybe I hung upside down for too long. Have you had any problems from hanging too long? I should get the bench too, maybe that would be a much more gentle hang.

  • An inversion table is a very gentle hang and can be adjusted to limit the angle of dangle, making it even gentler.

    I wouldn't be without mine.

  • 'the angle of dangle', hehe. So yes, I will definitely invest in an inversion table. Thanks a lot for taking the time to reply to me here, too.

  • is this working?

  • i thought the cat was going to bite it.

  • She used the back of my head as a scratch post once.... OUCH!!

  • freaking crazy!

  • My lower back pain is due to a rather impressive scoliosis. Inverting for half an hour, twice a week does help relieve the pain. I don't care why. But I am able to totally relax in the inverted position, although initially it took some time to be able to, I guess I had to just get used to being upside down.

I know it works for me, and I know other people who have tried this, and it works for them.

  • The spinal cord is controlled by a reflex that could be tracked easily by tapping on the knee (like the doctor does). When feet is no longer in contact with the ground/surface that reflex automatically kicks in thus making it impossible to stretch/relax erector spinae (lower back muscles). Sorry, but this baby won't fly....

  • If you had a bad back that would make it worse all that manouevering.

Is hanging upside down for 30 mins good for you??

  • Seems like a fix it yourself kind of situation! A better idea is to BUY a pair of Spider Gravity boots (I have a pair myself) and this is used with the bar that you already have (the top one) or even better buy a Teeter Hang-Ups Inversion Table (you can see that in action on my youtube site)

  • I have Spider Gravity boots now and an inversion table, necessary after an upper back injury made it impossible for me to use this method of inversion. However, I could hang for half an hour easily in my converted Ice Hockey boots, even up to an hour, with no pain anywhere, but the inversion table/hang ups cause lots of ankle pain, reducing me to a maximum of 10 minutes, with pain in my ankles from about 3 minutes.

  • Just doing that would put me in a whole bunch of hurting. You must not have much if a back problem.

  • looks good but not so easy for someone very heavy although Id love to hang like a bat for a minute or two! id get in a bit of a panic though if those shoe hooks didnt release me quick enough! lol

  • lol @ wendywoo62000
