  • I have the A1, which I bought after much research. I love this knife. It's a big, heavy, sharp piece of equipment, and it feels good having it handy when I'm out in the woods, to kill grizzly bears or mountain lions with. ;)

However, I was disappointed when I first got the knife and tried cutting some small gauge steel wire with it, This is something that a Busse could do all day. However, the wire knocked small chips out of the edge of my Fallkniven. I thought they were tougher than that.

  • I have had a F1 since 15years and used it a lot and it is still very good.

The Swedes know how to make good knifes...

  • You wouldnt happen to have any KYDEX sheaths left would you? It seems its impossible to find any Fallkniven A1 with kydex sheaths nowadays.

    Just wondering, thanks

  • @redeemer61190

Hi, No I don't know of any, just the leather and zytel. the kydex has been out of production quite a while now. Unless you have one specially made?

    paul

  • @workwearcanadacom Thanks for the reply. Well, I guess as long as Zytel is just as good as Kydex then its good enough for me.

One thing that concerns me though is that I hear a lot about laminated VG10 chipping easily. But others say thats just because of the factory edge, and if you were to sharpen it yourself, then the edge would be more chip-resistant.

    Any thoughts on this?

  • dont get the black coated one, it wears off, get the stainless steel version, ive got one and its a very solid survival knife and a defensive knife aswell.

  • @androgenix

Hi. In one respect you are right about the coating, that it will wear off, but bear in mind that the coating is not a 'protective' one, as say a powder coat (VG10 is a very good stainless steel and doesn't need protecting) the coating is there solely as a non reflective. This is specified by the military, whom Fallkniven supply and Fallkniven offer this to the general public as an option as well.

    Paul

  • @workwearcanadacom well its true what you say but i'd rater have a shiny good looking knife even after some rough use than a shabby looking coated knife full of scratches. Anyway i highly recomend it, practically indestructible (exept the coating naturally), and a joy to hold and use, this is my #1 knife, noone else ive owned is even close.

  • @androgenix Stainless steel can give away your position. I'd rather have a non reflective blade, and an EXTRA coating to keep it stout than the cheaper shiny version. As would MOST people ; )

  • i noticed its really hard to find an A1 with a leather sheath anyone know where i can find sheaths made of leather for the A1

  • @samstterhamstteer

Hi we have planty in stock, just let me know if you need one.

    thanks

    paul

  • @workwearcanadacom omg are you kidding me, most sites out there dont have them , i mean some do but they are far away , i didnt bother to order it from your site cause i looked on your site and it didnt show so i figured you dont stock them either, i allready bought the knife at a local store any way you can sell just the sheath? i will buy it right away

  • Hi, really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work!

However, I advice you to not show a black blade against a black shirt. ;) Looking forward to hear more in depth thoughts on the A1. I don't know whether I should get one of these or go for the F1.

How does the A1 handle camp chores like food preparation and such things? Youtube is full of videos showing people batoning it through wood already. Can it be used as a knife? (Rather than an axe.) Cheers!

  • @kinskibrain

    Hi

Yes, its veryy good, i slices well. Obviously the greater the distance of the working part of the knife from the hand that works it, the greater the exageration of the hands movements it produces. So for fine work, a shorter blade will always be better than a londer one, but then you lose out on that chopping ability.

Its a personal thing really and much depends on the type of work (and where/what you are working with) as to which knife would give you the best service.

    paul

  • Did you ever do a full review of the A1 ???

  • @ayokay123

    Hi

No, haven't got around to it yet!.I will, just a busy time lately!!

  • I don't know what to buy, a Fallkniven A1 or a Cold Steel Recon Scout... The Cold Steel is a little bit bigger, but I've seen Pictures were it actually broke while splitting wood...

Today I ordered the F1 though and I have a S&W Bowie but I want a big very good knife.

  • The Fallkniven A1 is a must if you appreciate QUALITY.

  • @wolfenburger +1 on that. :)

  • have you reviewed Thor yet??

  • Hi browndemon386,

No I haven't reviewed the NL knives yet, but they are a great range of knives, really well made and designed. Maybe in the furure I will.

    thanks

    Paul

  • I'll test some out and see how we go. The designs look good, we'll just have to see how that steel holds up.....! Overall though, they look good.

  • cheers Paul, great review.

Perhaps If I could suggest diversifying the tags on your video for added youtube exposure?

Also maybe a couple of cutting tests - paper and feathersticks just to get it on par with other A1 reviews out there.

And finally (last suggestion) we in the knife community love it when there are still or video images of a knife in comparison with other blades - perhaps an A1 next to an F1 etc.

    Cheers and yours truly,

  • Hi Thanks for the comments! These initial videos are just to give quick over- views on the products. I want later videos to be more indepth with 'usage' being a big part of the review. Good idea about the comparisons, I hadn't thought of that, but I can see how that would be useful, I'll make sure I include that in later work. anything else you would like to see, just let me know.

    Thanks again

    Paul

  • Hmmm.... Just fyi, survival is misspelt in the tags.

Just wondering - ever thought of becoming a Canadian distributor of RAT knives?

  • Thanks for the info!. RAT knives.. I'll have to have a look at those. A lot of knives I like the design of, but often the steel they use lets them down. I haven't had experience of RAT knives, so this may not be the case with them!. I'll have a look.

    Thanks

    Paul

  • Make sure you look into authentic RAT designs, and not Ontario RAT.

RAT uses 1095, nothing fancy - but fantastic quality and in my experience (just started using them, i'm normally a FK addict) their heat treat does them very well. Very nice in hand too - The americans are all over them, but they are hard for us (canadians) to get. Having a distributor would be amazing.
