Starting at about 1:16:00, excellent illustration of silliness of torture. The mafia agent torture Sullivan to make him say what he's convinced Sullivan knows, but Sullivan just say the truth. Torturers are dangerous imbeciles who want people tell them what they want to hear. They are beastly imbeciles endowed with power and devoid of real intelligence. They get phony information, or corrupted information at best. They're stupid. Any real expert will tell you. The mafia agent kills Sullivan.
Great movie, 1 of my all time fav. been looking for this for 25 years. Last time i saw this was 1986 in las vegas after i had bet my life savings on the NYM to beat the astos and of course bill buckner and the red sox so i remember waiting for those wonderful series to start i ran upon this gem of a movie and have been looking for it since. Been looking here for years and FINALLY its here. I will watch it twice a year for the rest of my life, walter was magnificent and thanks veronica 775k worth
@hamtrak That is hard to believe......I thought he was great in this!!.......I liked his serious, no-nonsense demeanor in this.....very down-to-earth and intelligent role.
Thanx! I have searching since month for this movie. In german it's called "Der große Coup" and I can't find it. Great entertainment! Good old times...
Thanks for posting! This was a totally new 70s movie for me, it was really good! Somehow different, more tranquil feeling. Beautiful New Mexico locations, liked that Lincoln chase, nice 70s vibe + John Vernon and Joe Don Baker were excellent.
I liked it, perhaps especially because plunging me back into the 70s, but I found the plot a bit too convoluted. He has the passports renewed anticipating it will inform the mob of his whereabouts and then set them up in the way he did?
It's all a bit much, I find...Still, an enjoyable enough movie...
This is a great film and matthau holds it well but i get the impression that the role of Varrick was written for Eastwood!

31:13 to 35:54 ......great scene....Matthau should have won best actor for that scene, hands down!!!

Hard to believe that Walter Matthau didn't like this film or his role in it, One of his more memorable characters for sure.
