i completely agree with him on the direction music has taken recently, but i have to differ and say that it's no reason to take yourself out of the mix. they need to make new stuff from what influenced them to write back in their day. they can make gold if they'll just put the fire into it and say "Fuck it" to everyone who tries to push them down.
billy is so intelligent, i've always admired him for the way he voices his opinions. he describes things in ways that i've never heard any other musician describe.
...So I see what he is saying about the dilemma of what turn to take and where to go at this point. Maybe something has to get back in line in a cultural sense or the general malaise is being reflected in the music. Billy must be so frustrated.
I agree with what he is saying about emphasis being put back onto experimentation, not scenes/cliques because its draining the life out of music. It looks like a vicious cycle where people gravitate toward the spirited nature of past music because its not sensed in the current music, while conversely musicians might feel the spirit is lost in their audience.
This is a great video from a great & informative interview! Hope they do many more & its nice to see that this one was recorded as they dont do many interviews these days-other than radio!
It was really interesting & I'm loving the new songs from the band too! "Song For A Son" and "As Rome Burns" are awesome and they are a great indication that some great things are to come from "The Mighty SP!" ;)
Billy just lacks filters. He speaks his mind. He says what other people are afraid to say. This is always a social liability in a conformist society. But some people can't be molded into a drone regardless of the consequences.
I've ALWAYS been a SP fan, but the only record I actually bought was the new one. It's not enough to appreciate the music anymore. We have to actively support it! SP's best days I'm convinced are ahead. Just keep the magic in the music and keep speaking openly in interviews. I LOVE THE NEW ALBUM! From a musician's POV, it rivals any of the 90's stuff which already was great. Keep rocking Billy and Jimmy! You have my patience and support ALWAYS. GOD SPEED SMASHING PUMPKINS!!!
The New Smashing Pumpkins are great if all goes wrong was awesome dvd I really like the new songs and the old that what like about band every album is different it never gets old.

If Billy wants that visceral feeling back during live shows he should actually write some material that merits it instead of blaming fans for wanting to hear the old songs instead of the crapfest that was Zeitgeist.
Hopefully As Rome Burns and Song for a Son are the first steps in a good new direction. And for god sakes Billy get rid of your awful current singing voice you carried over from TheFutureEmbrace....
Billy's not 'blaming' fans for anything; he's simply making a very valid point about how the classic Pumpkins songs no longer touch the fans through their their new, original sound (like they used to), but rather, through their sentimental impact only. Therefore, the Pumpkins are leaving the past behind and creating new music out of hope that a new kind of passion towards it will develop from the fans. God bless them for even trying. It's people like you who don't deserve bands like this.
And for the record, Zeitgeist kicked ass. The band members are all still incredibly talented and their songs are still highly technical. Rather than comparing Zeitgeist to the Pumpkins' older music (which was also brilliant), it seems wiser to simply appreciate the present (since that's what we live in) so that we can flow with/appreciate the fact that the band is presently producing new music again.
song for a son is brilliant. it really surprises me that i can love a song like i used to love the albums when i grew up w/ em
i like the new singing voice. it's very peter murphy influenced w/ the same heart as 80's pumpkins & the ranting billy has done on stage over the years in the middle of songs.
i don't think any of the new stuff is at all like TFE.
and actually, he has brought back his signature 'youthful screaming' voice.
i love that he took singing lessons. his voice is beautiful
Billy looks like his dad. ha

Wow. Billy looks really young here. Maybe it's the lack of scraggly facial hair.

Loved Billy's answer on who he would like to jam with...I love the Jimi Hendrix Experience and it would be awesome to see Billy jamming with Jimi.

but honestly. wait 5 years like he said.
i've been trying to tell people this myself.
wait til they get the industry cum and slime washed off of them. 5 years is enough time for them to tear it up and then perfect it.
i hope they keep to smaller clubs.
