  • Thanks for the great info. I've been storing shortening but I 'll buy some lard as well (and bacon grease)

  • Ummm... *shy* ...I have to admit that I do save and use bacon grease - and I do fry in it (and have used it as a substitute in things like corn bread when I ran out of shortening or for frying leftover potatoes)

You won't get complaints from me about using it yourself - once the very idea was abhorrent to me!

BUT - I would rather use lard/bacon grease than a GMO oil any day - if only to show that I don't support an industry that endorses frankenfoods and seed patents.

    Ruby.

  • I too use many of these oils. I have set coconut oil on fire twice now so I don't use it as often. I use to brown meat and such but no more. The smoke point is too low and I nearly set my kitchen on fire! I had a very large burn on my hand and arm! In saying that, the coconut oil is great for baking!

  • @horticultureandhomes Wow! That's scary. Thanks for sharing your story. I use coconut oil to bake and for making the best popcorn ever.

  • Great info.

    Thanks

  • @katzcradul look in the section that has the kitchen stuff near the stuff like ashtrays and gadgets. We're off any other oil here because of heart condition my dh has. My only other choice is Canola Oil and I do store that too. Took him off fish oil and onto olive oil. Doctor's orders. We add it to soups etc. What's really good is new red potatoes boiled with skins, cut in half and then fried in a little olive oil and kosher salt....

  • O.k....Show yourself! Who's the health freak troll who doesn't like bacon grease? LOL I knew I'd get at least one thumbs down from showing my bacon grease. So funny.

  • Great information oil storage is important. I only buy olive oil in cans it last much longer than clear jars. I've stored it about 3 years without it going rancid. I use my old oil for lamps. I am growing olive trees to make my own when things go bad.

  • @BexarPrepper We use a lot of olive oil. I like to think of it as....well, fruit juice. LOL I bet olives would grow good where you are. It's certainly arid enough. Just as long as there's not a lot of wind. Olive trees are so shallow rooted. If they're loaded with fruit and high wind comes up...there could be trouble. The good thing for you is there's a Texas Olive Oil Council. That's cool. I'll be interested to see how this turns out for you. Too humid here for olive trees. : (

  • @katzcradul I purchased trees grown specifically for this area. Lost 3 last winter they were just too small. Hopefully won't loose anymore this winter. I still have 9 two males and seven female. Once again the deer like the new leaves :(

  • We won't eat any unfermented soy on purpose. And never ever use Canola or rapeseed. love this vid!

  • can you use the bad oil for lighting?..

  • @scodurh Yep...sure can. It won't smell that great but you can burn it.

  • Hi,

please make a vid on your homemade toothpaste

  • @EnchantedAlana Will do...I put it on the list of videos to make.

  • This was a very informative video. You are one of the people who has inspired me to start a food storage. I'm starting to can again and dehydrate several things. Now I know what fats to store. Thanks very much.

  • @edhunley That is so great to hear. I'm excited for you. Your comment motivates me to continue. Thanks for posting it.

  • Well good Lord, what can you buy anymore?? Corn oil is gmo thanks to Monsanto! Canola oil stands for "canadian oil" & comes from rapeseed which is toxic (research that on the net), Soybean is gmo also?? Safflower is expensive. I just bought some more vegetable oil thinking that would be safe but now what do we do?? Lard? stopping up the arteries w/animal fats? I am very upset about the corruption going on & communistic way our country is going...what to do??

  • @kokonutbaby1 Frustrating isn't it. You are probably fast approaching the way I feel, which is, "The best i can do, is all I can do." Just do the best you can. It will all work out. I've decided not to worry myself sick about the things I can do nothing about. I SO understand your frustration though.

  • I have a little old metal canister that says grease down the side of it and has a lid. Thanks as always for the information. I don't have chickens and doesn't look like I can have them anytime soon, now I have read in my Tightwad Gazette that you can use soy flour as a substitute for eggs in baking, do you do that or know anything about it?1 heaping TBSP and 1 TBSP water= 1 egg. Would be cheaper than powdered eggs, I would think. Just wondering if you do this or can say yes or no on that idea;)

  • @preppinjunkie There are lots of substitutes for eggs and you found one. Yes it works...so do: 2 tbsp corn starch + 1tbsp water; 2 tbsp arrowroot flour + 1 tbsp water; 2 tbsp potato starch + 1 tbsp water; 1 heaping tbsp soy powder + 2 tbsp water; 3 tbs mayonnaise; 1 tbsp soy milk powder + 1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water; 1 banana = 1 egg in cakes; 1 tbsp ground flax seed + 2 tbsp water; 1 tbsp unflavored gelatin + 1 tbsp cold water + 2 tbsp boiling water

  • @katzcradul you go girl :)

  • @katzcradul Thanks Katz, this is getting written down!

  • @preppinjunkie I love the tightwad Gazette I got both of their books when they compiled their newsletters :)

  • @BexarPrepper I have the complete edition and it is fabulous! I am pretty sure there are some Interviews with Amy Dacyczyn floating around on youtube. It even has a tour of her home in them ;)

  • The finest coconut oil in my honest opinion is Extra Virgin Organic Coconut oil. BUT not to cook with...you can but Its anti viral, anti fungal and anti bacterial. You can use it as a diaper balm and its great for first aid. a teaspoon in coffee makes it rich as well! :)

  • @nagaempress I use it in my homemade toothpaste as well...it smooths out the grittiness. Great stuff.

  • Eating cholesterol is not the problem; your body produces it; what is a problem is carbohydrates and sugar. Protein-rich fatty foods are NOT the cause of heart disease. Check out a favorite on my channel: " How Bad Science and Big Business Created the Obesity Epidemic". You will want to see this video-- but be PREPARED for SHOCK AND AWE.

    xx ~~cc

  • @carefulcarpenter Do you remember in the late 80's when they told us eggs were bad for us. That never rang true for me...eggs are such an amazing food. Of course we should all know by now that dietary cholesterol does not equal cholesterol build-up in our bodies. "They" want us to eat less protein and more carbs and sugar...that's how we get sick, go to the doctor, an help the doctors and big pharma get rich dispensing their meds. Now look what you did...you pushed a hot button. LOL

  • @katzcradul Pharma, the AMA, and medical researchers--- don't get me started. Coconut oil is my fav.

  • @carefulcarpenter Look up High Frutose Corn Syrup I think you will find your culprit.

  • Here in the south you can buy lard anywhere! It is the best for biscuits. It's not good for you at all but it sure does make food taste good. Coconut oil is the best. Very good video.

  • I found that the price of coconut oil varies widely from store to store. I was buying it at Walmart for a little over $4 and other stores were charging about $9. Within the last few months it has jumped to close to $6 at Walmart. I'm glad I stocked up on it when I did. Great video!

  • LOL, we go through a gallon of olive oil in a month. I store olive oil by the gallon but, I keep it in an area that is normally around 60 degrees. Light olive oil has the higher smoking temperature. We use it in soups, fry with it and add it to Italian dishes. I've had Crisco for 4 years and it's been fine. After that it's gone bad. I have the old bacon grease teapot that has a strainer on the tip to get the bits out. Works great. You can buy them at Wally World for like 5 bucks.

  • @Rhiahl I love that little teapot thing! I'm going to look for it the next time I'm there. A gallon a month! My gosh! Are you Italian? In our house, if I discover we're out of olive oil or garlic, I start to hyperventilate! LOL That is the meaning of teotwawki for me!

  • I'm sure this has already been asked, but can you consider adding a discussion about GMO foods to one of your Friday videos? Thank you as always Katzcradul!

  • @Monchichito I've put it on my list...thanks for asking.

  • @Monchichito Yes, a discussion on GMO foods would be interesting. I'm not convinced it is unhealthy and it would be good to get preppers' thoughts on it.

  • Great video as always, I have been told that coconut oil burns and somkes at a very low temp. Can you tell me if this is true or not as I have never used it. Thanks for your great videos...........Tom

  • @1620416204 It smokes at 350 degrees. Keep it at that or below and your good to good. Work well if you're using it for pan frying rather than deep fat frying.

  • @katzcradul OK, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. I need to start using coconut oil to cook with. Thanks again..........Tom

  • @1620416204 I'll try to find a smoke point chart and add a link. Look for it it in the comment section in a little while.

  • I am still trying to convince my dad that Coconut Oil is some of the best stuff you can consume. Studies show that it actually is the best oil for you, from a health perspective. It contains essential fatty acids that are necessary to brain development. It helps remedy dry skin, and eliminate cholesterol from the blood stream!

  • I can attest to the fact that purchasing your oil in a gallon jug is not a good idea. Unless you are going to fry chicken or fish and need that much at one time. I don't normally re-use my oil, unless it is like the next day and I have filtered it. I just don't like the taste. I do, however purchase my olive oil in a large jug at Sam's, but I keep it in a dark cool place, or even in the extra fridge. All good info. Talk soon. Noreen

  • @atticus9799 As always...I appreciate you. Thanks for backing me up on this one. Oil is so expensive. I just would hate for folks new to this food storage thing to have spent a lot of money for good oil, only to have it go bad.

  • Man I am so glad to see someone else who stores there bacon grease LOL. Great information. Thanks

  • @missouriprepper I'm from the south...what can I say...it's a law down there....NEVER throw out bacon grease. It's the best seasoning ever. (I'll have to show how I make my cornbread using bacon drippings.)

  • @katzcradul please show the best way to store the grease please!!!! <<<loves me some bacon grease!

  • @nagaempress LOL...I DID show it! I keep mine in an old peanut butter jar or mayonnaise jar and screw the lid on and throw it in the fridge or the freezer....simple as that.

  • @nagaempress LOL it was late and sometimes I am DENSE!!!!! :)=)

  • @katzcradul Great info as always, thank you.

  • Thank you, very informative .

  • @jokermike2 oh what about peanut oil?

  • @jokermike2 I listed peanut oil in the vegetable oil section. It's a great oil, with a high smoking point...great for frying and it's what gives fried Chinese food the delicious crisp coatings...but goes rancid at about the same rate as other vegetable oils. Peanut oil is much like olive oil in that it's high in monounsaturates...it's best stored in the fridge. Plan to use it within 6 months of opening. (Walnut and sesame oils are even more delicate.)

  • @katzcradul Thank you, But I was wondering if there was something cheaper than peanut oil. Love it when frying fish it's but like 5$ a quart . Thanks Mike

  • @jokermike2 I know...it's expensive. I did see it at Sam's club this weekend, but I didn't check the price on it since it was not something I was planning to buy.

  • @jokermike2 I would use Crisco. It make a great, crispy fried fish.

  • Rancid olive oil can be burned for light.

    Remember the 10 virgins story?

  • @kissy7fur Sure can...but it will stink. I don't remember where it says the 10 virgins burned 'rancid' olive oil in their lamps. LOL However, I bet the 5 foolish wished they'd have had ANY kind of oil when theirs ran out! Isn't that just the best Bible story for preppers?! Oh wait, then there's the one about Noah...great prepper. And then there the story of the 7 fat and 7 lean years in Egypt. LOL I could go on and on. It's clear, God loves preppers!!!

  • @katzcradul AMEN!
