Wouldn't the cup of water heat up/boil easier on top of the chimney?If you got small water bubbles in the oven then the water was heated to 180 degrees which means the ambient temperatute was around 200 or more which works as an oven, just a little slower, that's all. You could boil water on top and bake inside. I think it was a bigger success than you think. You just overlooked it. Good stuff.
