  • Shostakovich had orchestrated both Mussorgsky's versions!

  • @TheSeraskier I'll add that they may be using material from Shostakovich's edition, but if so, it is in some kind of hybrid between his version and the 1869 original.

  • @TheSeraskier This can't be the Shostakovich version, Shostakovich did not work from the 1869 score, he used Mussorgsky's revisions from 1872. The material here is certainly from the 1869 version of the opera as it was dramatically altered in the 1872 version (which is what Rimsky-Korsakov also based his orchestrations off of). If you check my playlists, you'll see a complete performance posted on youtube of the Shostakovich version, conducted by Gergiev.

  • This isn't the Shostakovich version, this is Mussorgsky's original 1869 version. The Shostakovich orchestrations were based on his 1872 revisions.

  • @BorisGodunov. Actually, Yes, this is the 1869 version. But I was following this clip with a score I have of it, and sure enough, the orchestration is completely different. Could it be that Shostakovich orchestrated this as well as 1872? This is the act that Mussorgsky almost completely recomposed when he revised it. The only thing I can tell you is that is definitely a reorchestration of 1869. Not sure if Shostakovich did it though.
