Well first you want to stop by Shoot The Core and look at their huge list of freeware shmups, you can find links to just about any PC shmup there.

I imagine you've already explored your Zun options so I'd start you off with the X.X shooters(Blue Wish Resurrection,Eden's Edge). But if you want less of a cave style try out Demolition Gunner. If you like the Gory artwork of this game try out Hellbound and Galshell. Gocha is also very good.

I love this game even though I can't get very far. It's one of those games that make you go "just one more try" a thousand times in a row.
