It's always good to make them some sugar water to help them better decide to stay and begin working. Great catch, that's a pretty sizeable swarm harvest!
don't shake the tree don't cut the tree-cut a few branches yes but not the cutting or in a bloody cardboard box either you can slowly pick the swam with your hands gently you can waer gloves to be safe
Really interesting to watch, one of my hives has just swarmed this evening (in Ireland) and I'm about to go get a box and catch my first swarm hopefully. Its hanging from a branch at chest height about 10ft from the rest of the hives, I noticed the air was full of bees and watched where they were landing. I've always managed to avoid swarming by using the artificial swarm control methods but this year have failed. Fingers crossed it goes as smoothly as your catch did.
I made a bee vacuum that does not harm any bees. I usually get every bee except a few wandering scouts. I slowly suck the girls into a padded 55 gallon barrel using a shop vac while my wife modulates the suction velocity. The bees are then carefully dumped into whatever kind of hive I have available. 100% effective so far.
that would be cool, but I don't think that's the queen. It doesn't look too queenlike to me, and it's not where I'd expect her to be, that's for sure.
@parkerhale1099 sure! I enjoyed making it, and should post a response some time with an update on the hives. I've caught about 5 or six swarms since this one. This one actually went pretty well...
I would recommend that you wear a veil (or at least some protection over your face/head) when capturing a swarm. Generally bees are fairly docile when they have swarmed but there are usually guards patrolling the periphery. They will still sting you!
The chain of bees that you observed the following day are producing wax to draw out the foundation into comb.
yes, the move was a success. i don't have progressive video of the building process, though, and i've learned some things about observation hives. light tells the undertaker bees how to dispose of the dead, and the observation window can confuse them. opening/closing the window also freaks them out. for more, see my blog post.

how does he not get stung?
gschreiber94 1 year ago
@gschreiber94 he's not afraid of them
when you're afraid, your body puts off a scent that puts the bees into offensive.

Bedely1 2 years ago
no, not even close to the same thing. it's a different species of bee. bumblebee colonies are tiny compared to honeybee colonies.

the sound of that many bees sets my teeth on edge :/
beercanjunkie 2 years ago
first you must spread the swarm with water to make it heavy and could not fly.
then .. cut the tree where the swarm stand and put it easy in the box.
placing the box in this state make it easy to drop on the ground.
i hope you have an advantage from my recomandations
thanks

Cool! So was the move a success? It looks like it was. An update video of the observation hive would be nice, if it's not too cold out now.
