my favorite recording is by leonid kogan. for the warm, lovely romantic tone...check out oistrakh's. it leaves nothing to be desired.
people should be nice on these posts... watching people like sarah, jascha, leonid, ol' gilly and pinky (we're all very familiar, you see) is how i taught myself to play.
whoever maintains the arts these days is a gift. my gf comments on this music, that it expresses something deeper in humanity. people usually only lie by talking.. this music is more honest
i'm not a big fan of sarah's playing in general, not because she isn't remarkable. she is...a complete child prodigy (who i think has burned out, sadly). the modern style of playing where everything is lush and romantic misses some of the longing and coldness of this movement.
heifetz' recording from tthe late 20s allows one to hear the cold, aching in this piece...the longing for warmth. but not the warmth itself. it makes one beg for the drunken, jolly character of the 3rd movement.
I have seen her live twice in the last 2 years in Uk and amazing both times, last time was in london in april last year were she played Bruch violin concerto and brought the house down. Sarah was amazing that night and people all around me who had not seen her play live before were absolutely stunned at the power and intensity of her performance.
Sarah Chang !!!!! es un amor y aqui toca tan impresionante y perfecto el Tchaikovsky que sigo quedando hechizado al oir esta version, for ever Sarah !!!!!
@lovemetu Wow, you're criticizing him for a typo? Claiming he can't spell, when in fact his spelling is clearly at the level that one could safely assume it was a typo. I felt his comment was astute, regardless of whether I agree with it or not. Your comment adds nothing. THOU ART A TROLL SIR.
Well the fact she can play this at 12 years doesn't make her automatically a genious. The "enfant prodige" is often, incorrectly, seen like a great performer. We should try to listen to Sarah with a more intelligent criticism... I don't want to say she's not an incredible violinist, naturally. She plays amazingly.
Was Annie Sophie Mutter that good in Tchai VC at age of 12? Wooh, the 2nd Movt is so beautiful. I see glimpses of Kreisler's warm and sweet in Sarah's music.
Yes, her cadenza in 1st Movt did have a few faults though.
No doubt the very artists of modern times that you dislike may be the ones in years to come that will be quoted as golden era. I remember when the Beatles first came out , Elvis Presley etc , they all came in for abuse from the older age groups and yet now are thought of as great popular music musicians. Time changes everything of how we judge people. It is far better that people go to see modern classical players than not go and just resort to watching to and listening to long dead artists.
So perhaps the modern artists are more emotional and showbiz etc than the old masters but they are young people playing to people of a different mindset and age group than years ago. We cannot hold back time, entertainment ,everything in life is always changing ,thats life. Many composers ,artists etc were not even recognised till many years after their deaths. Tchaikovsky himself came in for much criticism in his life time ,also bizets Carmen was not acclaimed till after he died.
Also another Violinist that I like and have seen live, Akiko Suwanai who won the Tchaikovsky prize in 1990 at the mere age of 18 years old. Does she again fall into the type that you dislike as well ?
Out of interest she uses the Antonio Stadivarius 1714 'Dolphin; violin that was once used by Heifetz .
For classical music to survive it has to compete with many other entertainments. Without modern artists to play it and bring in new young people to watch and listen, it will die a slow death.
hace 5 minutos recuerdo q cuando vi por primera ves este video hace un año no lo pude creer ahora tampoco Sarah Chang !!!!! toca increiblemente el Tchaikovsky .
How was it possible for an 11 year old child to play like this ?
I see so many bitter and twisted comments from Sarah haters,eg Sarah is just part of the Dorothy DeLay pr machine, blah blah blah !!
Even one a few weeks ago saying she is only a limited player, the abuse and hate goes on .So ask these youtube experts to parade their own skills on video playing the violin .....and they make excuses or go quiet !!
Once again I visit this and once again I prefer Sarahs version to anything else ,Heifetz anybody, nobody plays with the soul and beauty that Sarah pulls out on this performance ,my god and she did this at 11 years old ,just unbelievable !!
First of all this forum on youtube is open to all views and anyone can state their opinions and views, its not a dictatorship.
Heifitz was a wonderful violist but I find him rather cold and unemotional in his performances . Even when he was playing many critics said the same thing.
I have watched his short version on youtube from film Carnegie Hall many times.
Sarah Changs version here shows so much skill ,soul and joy ,quite amazing as she was only 11 at the time.
What can I tell you? You clearly are not interested in learning and evolving. It's your right. I know many people who consider David Garrett to be the best violinist in the world, and then there are many who believe Will Smith is the best singer ever... "Opinion" just depends on a person's level of ignorance and lack of knowledge. FACT is that Heifetz is better than Chang. What you need to do is re-evaluate your view of what you find cold and what you find "soulful". Learn, always.
Please dont become a 'youtube policeman ' dictating what other people should like or dislike. All life is opinion and individual feelings . Yes technically Heifetz is probably better than anyone else, but that does not mean that I or others cannot enjoy other artists more than him. It may be possible in the future that a computer may be invented that will play musical instruments better than any human can ,but would that mean that we would or should prefer it to any human ?
Heifetz is not about technique thou. Technique doesn't determine who is better. Many modern retards like James Echnes and Kovakos play cleaner and faster than Heifetz sometimes, but they are musically impotent.
I think one of the problems with modern classical music is that people care about SEEING rather than hearing. I think people should close their eyes and listen, not worry about dress, age, smiles and charming personalities.
I am not an expert like you and also your playing on your down load videos are very good, well done !! All I am saying is that certain artists such as Sarah give much joy to those who watch them by not only their performanc but also by their stage presence. To me it is wonderful to see Sarah at such a young age playing with such joy and love for the music of Tchaikovsky . I and many others get great pleasure from this she plays with all her ' soul' and love for the music.
Life is hard enough so to be able to gain joy from music is something wonderful.
I went to see Sarah Chang at the Barbican in london in february. Despite the weather being freezing cold she warmed our hearts with a wonderful performance and afterwards ,took the time to meet all her many fans including myself for a chat, photos autographs etc. This is one of the reasons that Sarah is so much loved , she gives joy in her playing and by her presence, long may that continue .
My major issue with Chang and others is the shallow primitive and often vulgar expression of music they make. The Golden Age players had class, they were reserved, classy and elegant. They had style. You see, to me when some idiot like Jashua Bell rolls his eyes back and breathes heavy in slow spots and then sprays sweat in fast spots I want to vomit, I don't think it's music, it's tasteless crap, but many people buy into it because of his outer empty shell storm in a tea cup "style"
I have to agree with you to some extent. I have just watched Sarah Chang and David Oistrakh performances of the Tchaikovsky and there is no doubt that Oistrakh's is the better performance; in fact it may be the definitive one with better conducting and a better orchestra. However, I doubt if Oistrakh could have played the Tchaikovsky at 12-years-of-age anywhere near as well as Chang, even though he started playing at the age of six. She is an inspiration to many young players.
I apologize, it's just that any top level player will tell you it's the worst thing in the world to have people say someone like Chang is better than someone like Heifetz, it shows such staggering ignorance and lack of understanding of violin and music that it pains us as violinists to hear that. I think it's great that people enjoy Chang's playing, just don't compare it to Heifetz please. Ever. It quickly shows one's real level of taste and understanding of violin, or lack of.
@AntonPolezhayev Again, sorry for rather strong opinions. Just talking straight. Again, I think it's GREAT that people enjoy classical music and Chang's playing. I was only commenting on old VS new players, approaches and such.
Talking firstly of Sarah Chang, even you must surely admit that she was a very gifted child as in this wonderful performance, at the mere age of just 12 years old. Also Yehudi Menuhin called the young Sarah Chang
' The most wonderful , the most perfect, the most ideal violinist I have ever heard '
So on one hand you dont rate her ,then on the other hand someone like Yehudi Menuhin gives such high praise , puzzling indeed ?
I've seen her live and it's a whole different expirience! Watching her on youtube is nothing compared to hearing her live, and watching how she moves on stage. Actually I cried during the concert, i couldn't stop my tears falling with Bruch's second movement. That was a concert I'll never forget!
I am going to the barbican in london this friday to see her play live ,sarah emailed me this week to tell me that she was 11 years old when she did this performance .Yes she is a genius violinist and also a wonderfull sweet sensitive woman
@OOOmoepoOOO I know you will not like this as you like Perlman but I think that Sarah Chan has at the age of 11 played the definitave version of the Tchaikovsky violin Concerto .I have even been blindfolded and got a friend to put the different versions of it on while I listen to it and I always pick Sarahs out as best .She has the most is so sensitive to the music and so loves playing this concerto .Sarah is to the Violin as Van Cliburn is to the Piano !!

Her ear-training started far before she could hold a violin-and thankfully for us she also fell in love with the actual instrument. Children just need exposure and the free will to find their own niche.

Gra pięknie ale tytuł filmiku błędny lub film źle sformatowany . Należy przyciąć koniec part 1 i początek part 3 ; zostanie wyjątkowo urodziwa part 2 !
The "not clapping between movements" idea actually is something somewhat newer to people. In the old days (ie 1850 and before) there was clapping after each movement, and sometimes so much clapping that the orchestra would have to play the movement again before they could move on through the piece. I say, if you feel like clapping, then clap. How awesome would it be for that to happen again, and they have to repeat the movement? I would have liked to heard it a second time, it was so awesome
OMG, she has got to be one of the world's greatest violinists, EVER. I think Chang belongs in the same caliber of violinists such as Heifetz, Perlman, and Mintz. It would be such a thrill to listen to her in person!!!
It's a pretty long section, and most people don't really think of pieces in terms of movements, but rather as separate pieces all together. Which sounds silly, but not everyone's a musician.
after hearing a performance like that on the first movement, do you honestly think anyone would stay quiet? hell even as a musician myself, i wouldn't be able to hold back from clapping.
err, I don't think that it was a mistake or that they didn't know. it was just their way of letting her know that they thought her playing was that good.
dude I would give an arm to play like that, and she's only 12 in this. Well actually I wouldn't give an arm because then of course, i couldn't play at all. alright then, I would give a leg. how about that.
Only 12? I just watched another girl playing this at the same age on here. Wow, this was way better. I actually enjoyed listening and watching. She's almost flawless! I also like the fact that as she grew older, she didn't burn out. She is still around. I am amazed. This sounds as good as my teacher who studied with Josef Gingold when he played it live.
The Tchaikovsky you hear is not common to hear newer violinists master, is it??????? Discipline and intricacy....... Tchaikovsky and Sarah. Thank You Very Much Yarot3420

Gra pięknie ale tytuł filmiku błędny lub film źle sformatowany . Należy przyciąć koniec part 1 i początek part 3 ; zostanie wyjątkowo urodziwa part 2 !

I definitely prefer her playing as a young girl. She is so natural here concentrated on the music only and not thinking about herself as a performer.

It would be such a thrill to listen to her in person!!!

lol, stupid audience clapped after the first movement.

It's a pretty long section, and most people don't really think of pieces in terms of movements, but rather as separate pieces all together. Which sounds silly, but not everyone's a musician.

lol I know. But I cringed so hard.

after hearing a performance like that on the first movement, do you honestly think anyone would stay quiet? hell even as a musician myself, i wouldn't be able to hold back from clapping.

ummm AND? i think she's great ^_^

err, I don't think that it was a mistake or that they didn't know. it was just their way of letting her know that they thought her playing was that good.

dude I would give an arm to play like that, and she's only 12 in this. Well actually I wouldn't give an arm because then of course, i couldn't play at all. alright then, I would give a leg. how about that.
HannahXIV 3 years ago 68
old comment, I know... but - I would donate one of my legs to you if you played like that!
prfctday 3 years ago
haha ok then...so I'm assuming that if sarah chang loses a leg, you'll be the first one in line to help her out :)

Alguien me podría decir ¿dónde estudia ella, para un concierto, si tiene que estar en todas partes del mundo?

The audience just couldn't resist from applauding by the end of the first movement...
