Beautiful poem and I get what she's saying. I am a weed smoker, but I occasionally toke. I think many activities (smoking weed, drinking, work, sex etc) all have potential to be escape methods. Doesn't mean if you smoke weed, you're not dealing with reality. Moderation is great, but some use excess of any one of these things to not deal with the real. I think she is speaking more to that. The chronics. I know a few that have far more potential than they realize.
Just a thought: If you people believe you should have the right to express your opinions in favor of smoking weed, then she should have the right to express her no so favorable opinion.
If you listen she didn't really talk about physical health concerns with weed. She talked more about getting sucked in the lifestyle.

This poem is deep. I am having a problem making out what she says from, "They are artists, tongues painting backwards, wet with saliva rolling..." to "From thin air, they create clouds of dark smoke billowing up from blackened lips; my lungs cannot take it, but they are grown men, so they inhale deeply."
This girl is amazing and it's ok not to like spoken word just realize that behind the art form is a person. they are PEOPLE and they are doing good things you should support the peace. And you dont have to like it but obviously many people do!!! Dont worry about the people that hate....thats their job. Just enjoy the ones that love the work!!!

@StaceyValles Sorry to cut in on the convo, but the poet never said that they're bums because they smoke. "...Crushing bud like dreams they were told were too big for them so they pull." She's saying they smoke because they're "bums" or rather, they get high to forget. It's not a "don't smoke weed" campaign; she's just telling a story.
Otherwise, it's really presumptuous to say what she should and shouldn't write about. It's not her job to make sure people know that you're a successful smoker.

played out theme but nevertheless, it's a good delivery. one thing that irks me is when the audience interrupts the poet by yelling or applauding. as if the poet's words need external validation after every verse.

This poem is deep. I am having a problem making out what she says from, "They are artists, tongues painting backwards, wet with saliva rolling..." to "From thin air, they create clouds of dark smoke billowing up from blackened lips; my lungs cannot take it, but they are grown men, so they inhale deeply."

This girl is amazing and it's ok not to like spoken word just realize that behind the art form is a person. they are PEOPLE and they are doing good things you should support the peace. And you dont have to like it but obviously many people do!!! Dont worry about the people that hate....thats their job. Just enjoy the ones that love the work!!!
