she was young enough that the bulimia, anorexia, drugs, alcohol and whatever else, hadn't fucked up her looks yet. another 5 years, it would have started to show. still, she was GORGEOUS.
am I the only one who thinks she looks like Pete Doherty here. Mannerisms. Esp at 0:21 with her mouth open. Well Pete Doherty looks like Edie probably, he is always sort of mimicking and trying to be like 60s icons, a bit of a wannabe.
@xXPinkGoddessXx Just their mannerisms too are similar. and they both are addicted to heroin. AND this song sounds like a Pete Doherty song. I think Edie is the most imitated celebrity, even by guys lol. I think Pete Doherty is partly imitating her. That whole "little boy lost" gimmick/act he always has, its alot like Edie's "Poor Little Rich Girl" thing. Do you think its a coincident, or is Pete imitating her among others and does that make him a fake wannabe ???
Robbie Robertson's 2011 song "When the Night was Young" references Edie.
In '11 interviews he mentions after The Band joined Dylan in '65,while in NYC he lived at The Chelsea&Edie hung out in his room a lot.Edie-obsessed Warhol often came 'round looking for her.The desk would ring hers, then RR's room, &she'd often tell RR: "Tell him I'm not here"!The song mentions it.In a "new" '66 Dylan interview D admits having had&kicked a heroin habit.Edie's&/or Nico's influence(he had a affair with Nico)?
@MowgliX Well, I don't know much more. However,Robbie Robertson has said in recent interviews he's signed a book deal to write his autobiography & plans to start writing it in a few months. When it comes out, I imagine it will contain more recollections of mid-sixties times at The Chelsea, hanging with Edie, & Dylan.Dylan reportedly had an affair with Nico('65?)& wrote "I'll Keep it With Mine" about her.
A '66 recorded interview recently surfaced where he admits to have had & kicked heroin.
@Bobjb999 Thanks for the info!!!! I don't know about Dylan and Nico, but they say he had an affair with Edie. And that "everybody knew she was the real heroine of Blonde On Blonde", according to Patti Smith, who also lived at The Chelsea for several years.
@MowgliX Wow Factory Girl was THAT fake?! But they even show how badly her father was treating her and how her mother was basically like a zombie regarding everything!
@MowgliX Her eyes were like beautiful chocolate. She was the girl with eyes like twice frozen Hershey bars, somebody said. Or something like that anyway.
"That is unusual, to look like you had just walked out of a fairy tale. She had nothing human about her, just mystery"- Ivy Nicholson "I remember my Father telling me 'Edie can't help being fuc*** up. Bad things happened to Edie" Bibbe Hansen (mother to Beck) "It was a given that she was the classiest of all, most beautiful, the most glamorous, & you moved around her in that way. This was part of her persona."-David Weisman (director of Ciao! Manhattan)
Its like New York brought out the worst in her and the best in her. I find her interesting because I don't understand her mystery. I just wish she would've had a longer life.
I feel like people idolize her because she died young and tragically when she really was just a more stylish and intelligent Paris Hilton of the 60s. A socialite on drugs and in the party scene. She was interesting but God I hope people don't worship Paris Hilton 40 years from now in the same way they do Edie.
@Tigerlily21 I don't think Edie's early death, socialite status, drug use or style are anywhere near the most fascinating aspects of her life. The reason they are the most notable is because the public loves its tired old cliches. I think it's more appropriate to say that Edie's early death, status, addictions, and style all result from what makes her so fascinating, which was her iconoclastic character, rather than vice-versa.
@Tigerlily21 I disagree. It's more of a art thing in my opinion. It's hard to describe why I like her so much, mainly I believe it has to do with her being a interesting model when I draw, but I also like how even though she isn't pure she gives off a air of innocence. Like nena505 said, she's like Marilyn Monroe of the 60s.
@Mindue Edie grew up in this unbeleivably isolated way on her Father's ranch, only leaving there to go to the doctor, when she got out into the "real" world, she didn't know the most simple things due to her isolation. She was abused as a child, mentally, physically, & emotionally, leading her to find ways to cope with said abuse is all part of that mystery. Being extremely intelligent, finding ways to survive makes her fascinating & gave her a other-worldliness to the people around her.
@jarileigh I know all about Edie. I've read about her, seen movies, and even written a brief essay about her. I was just describing why "I'm" interested in her. I look at her from more a shallow point of view, but I love drawing her so I don't care if it's shallow or not. Her style and unique personality really inspires me in my art.
@Mindue I didn't say you didn't know anything about her, considering her issues, it's probably better to look at her from a shallow point of view, lol. I wish I could draw!
@Tigerlily21 You don't like her but you watch all her videos and continue to comment...40 years later....actions speak louder than words....if she is so worthless and uninteresting (not that you know anything about her) then why are YOU so fascinated with her?
@Tigerlily21 Why are you making videos of her if you think she is the same as Paris Hilton? and talking trash about those of us who actually know something about Edie and respect her? Respect is not a word you will find in the same sentence with Paris as far as I am concerned, but then you won't find me watching/making vidoes of Paris either. You should learn something about Edie, you just might find out why she is so interesting.....and absolutely nothing like Paris Hilton.
Poor lost soul abused to death by everyone around her, including that petulant talentless Andy Warhol. Drugs are never the answer. They will not kill the demon inside you.
Edie was forged in the fires of oppression and tyranny of her narcissistic father. Both unadulterated wealth and frugal poverty played tug o war in her wold. Isolation for many years and family eccentricity all played their parts... She was second to the youngest of eight and she was willful... so very willful.
@hellogoodbye0214 No, it's not Edie singing here, but Maureen Tucker of The Velvet Underground. Edie did contemplate singing herself at one point, but the idea never took off due to her lack of vocal ability.
@RosieCheeksx09 That is Edie herself, in her final film 'Ciao! Manhattan'. It's in the video because the preceding pictures are also shown in the film, and the person who made the video didn't cut the footage at the right moment.
@RosieCheeksx09 Probably an accident. Btw, that's Edie in Ciao! Manhattan, after she's had her boob job. Ciao! Manhattan is pure exploitation. Lots of people made thick wads of dollar bills off of Edie, everyone except Edie herself. She was used by everybody around her. When you are a slave to heroin, amphetamine and other drugs, you are totally helpless.
I remember this song performed in the Franch and English language movies about dreams, where the main character went into one of his dream sequences and performed the song in some animal costume with his coworkers for his girlfirend. Interesting to contrast their serious version with this one, the original.
@cervusadfontes Cale and Reed, who bent over backwards to be sympathetic toward Warhol on the Songs for Drella album, say Edie was nothing but a cash cow to him. Reed says he cared about him and his band, the VU, but Paul Morrissey, the director, said that was just business. Friends say Warhol was afraid to show his feelings, but you really wonder if he had any. He filmed a woman he knew was unstable while she was getting high. He worked with a problem drinker who'd just turned 18.
Her problem looks like borderline personality disorder in a number of ways. Parasuicidal behavior started in her teens, included DUI and extremely dangerous drug abuse called speedballing. It wasn't until a few years ago that therapists have had a clue about treating borderline. Dialectical Behavior Therapy works. Mood stabilizing drugs are better than they were in the 60s.
I love it when people post the "I know 'cuz I was there" stuff in youtube. Youtube comments is a very pitiful place to have a soapbox. It's like you don't know if they were there, or if they are liars, or just batshit insane and think they were there when they weren't. But hey, it's the youtube comment section, so you just don't give a shit either way. Edie was totally hot. I know, because I was there you pretentious bitches. Just kidding. I wasn't there. You're just bitches and don't know it.
As for Bob Dylan he is cool but a fair weather friend who has seen enough stroms. Can't you see " Its NOT HIS problem." If thats your friend I suggest you look up Eric Clapton!
Its true her eyes were her best feature. She was even beautiful when she was strung out. Children don't do drugs & don't get a snobbish attitude. I was embarrassed to go out with her cause she was whacked out on drugs. She was the "IT Girl", she was beautiful & I did love her. Edie was a star & more because of who she was off camera!
I do see Jennifer Gardner in her on the cover of vogue *& I am a Jennifer fan. I think she is one of the best actresses, lovely, talented of my genre. At 1:53 Edie looks so much like Monroe it scares me...maybe she's a sister I didn't know I had? For obvious reasons to anyone who knew Edie this is my favorite vid. as a capture photo of the past. Edie was a tragic story of woman more than Diana!!! I knew them both & can compare. Diana was ok given circumstance but Edie should have been Diana!!
For the record I liked Andy like my 2nd cousin in ways. Abuse is it Abuse on Park Ave or in the Ghetto. I wanted to disassociate from Edie because I did not want to die. She was a prisioner of war! Just like me. Yet no one defines the battle lines to save us. We just pay the toll booths to luxary on both sides! Disgusting!! Lies........
Jennifer Garner is gorgeous & so wholesome. If she is & broke free from the curse so be it. Can't fault that girl. Yeah in the momentary clip where Edie was blonde I almost see it. Yet in one secondary flip I see Monroe in a waif without a tit! Beauty is unity & its fleeting....it passes us all by.
Lead* not let. America is just a joint sorrow.....no one remembers the front lines of Elizabeth & Mary-Victorian lines wish they were dead in peace! Amen the best they can get! Edie WAS the JEWESS caught between the one who did not betray. The one trashed & exploited....the scum of all be filth for taking her innocence!
Lets face it Edie you were more Jewess than me & more Italiano maybe. I was more German & Egyptian. Oh and England let us all astray! Lisa Marie can never repair my heart in the ways you may...but your dead & inside so am I.
Oh Edie God Bless you...so much more of a Princess than Diana. They just took you down for her glory. Like family has killed family for profit for millenium. When mother & father can be at silent odds & kids sacrified of high on all sides to finance the middle extortion. God Bless Edie. I love you. You were fucked up. I know why...we all do. Kind been there...
They drove Nancy Spungen to total lunacy. Is that the skeleton in Elizabeth II's family tree? At least she was real & the world knows. Its more than we can say for Prince William & the whole lot of that family...
I think she does look like Judy Garland & Liza M. & a bit like Twiggy. I don't know about Clara Bowe I think she is a blood traitor or too many are now coming out of that line. Obvious if you look at Edie's life & her 2 brothers who died tragically you can see a pattern. They did the same thing to Nancy Spungen. Monroe had a horrible time but it just got worse from there. Screw the biological warfare, screw the identity theft, the abuse..God knows the truth.
Thanks for posting - this is great. I read the book about Edie, way back in 83. I think her drug problem, sadly came about because she was abused as a child. These days she would have got some help and hopefully lived past the age of 28 - such a young age to die.
@brunsk123 What is the book about Edie called? I was outbid on DVD---Factory Girl on Ebay. Did you see it? I wanna check it out. I know nothing about Edie, but her story seems interesting! Along with the whole Warhol group, too.
Giaisbomb, I wish I could remember. It was by a women whose surname was Stein, I think .Maybe if you go to Amazon and google Edie Sedgewick? I'm sorry to be not much help.
@brunsk123 I think you are absolutely right, it was sexual abuse, or intimidation, even beatings, at the hands of her father. Edie mentions it in Ciao! Manhattan. The portrayal of the character Susan Superstar was partly acting, partly true.
Edie was spoiled materially, but starved and tortured emotionally. You can see that in her eyes. Oh, those sprightly, beautiful but also deeply sorrowful light brown eyes that I will never forget.
@MowgliX Her Father drugged her more than once, even as a child, so if she had substance abuse issues, how would she even know differently when the way things were handled in her home was to give massive amounts of drugs? Her Father actually bragged to Neuwirth how he had drugged Edie & tricked her into thinking she was ill to lock her up in the "bins" (psych ward) he lied & said she was homicidal. He did this when she came home for X-mas 1966.
if there ever will be a biographical movie about her i think she should be played by keira knightley, they kinda look alike...even though keira should gain weight in order to look normal first...
She was truly the most talented and beautiful of Warhol's cronies. Most of the other regulars in his films and at the Factory weren't exactly beautiful/handsome and aside from a few seconds of magic in a handful films, they weren't exceptionally talented or memorable, either. Edie, on the other hand, could have been successful with or without Warhol. I think he knew this and that's why he clung to her initially. She was his ticket to acceptance by the mainstream.
You're right, most people don't see it, but the footage of Edie's wedding where she has long brown hair, a tan, and neutral makeup shows the resemblance.
Hey, did you know theres a retrospective of Nat Finkelsteins work from 20th Jan - 14th Feb at a gallery in London called IDEA GENERATION. He documented Warhols Factory in the 60's. You should check it out! :-)
Hey, did you know theres a retrospective of Nats work from 20th Jan - 14th Feb at a gallery in London called IDEA GENERATION you should check it out! :-)
Edie Sedgwick, the it girl. She had an interesting, fascinating, unique quality. Not only was she beautiful, but she had such an alluring way of speaking and made a big impression on everyone that she met - an instant success. For years now, countless young people have discovered Edie Sedgwick and felt a strangely compelling, deeply emotional, connection to her. Edie's creation of her persona, of her image, was her art form. Gone, but never forgotten.

Friends say Warhol was afraid to show his feelings, but you really wonder if he had any. He filmed a woman he knew was unstable while she was getting high. He worked with a problem drinker who'd just turned 18.

oh cmon now, that was not the intent. she tried them on her own.

Mood stabilizing drugs are better than they were in the 60s.

is it a problem how i feel more connected to Edie Sedgwick, Stuart Sutcliffe, and Darby Crash than anyone i know in real life?

GoddessElvina 2 years ago

GoddessElvina 2 years ago
1:53 the face of Monroe with no tits...still lovely.....
GoddessElvina 2 years ago
Jennifer Garner is gorgeous & so wholesome. If she is & broke free from the curse so be it. Can't fault that girl. Yeah in the momentary clip where Edie was blonde I almost see it. Yet in one secondary flip I see Monroe in a waif without a tit! Beauty is unity & its fleeting....it passes us all by.
GoddessElvina 2 years ago
Lead* not let. America is just a joint sorrow.....no one remembers the front lines of Elizabeth & Mary-Victorian lines wish they were dead in peace! Amen the best they can get! Edie WAS the JEWESS caught between the one who did not betray. The one trashed & exploited....the scum of all be filth for taking her innocence!
GoddessElvina 2 years ago
Lets face it Edie you were more Jewess than me & more Italiano maybe. I was more German & Egyptian. Oh and England let us all astray! Lisa Marie can never repair my heart in the ways you may...but your dead & inside so am I.
GoddessElvina 2 years ago
Oh Edie God Bless you...so much more of a Princess than Diana. They just took you down for her glory. Like family has killed family for profit for millenium. When mother & father can be at silent odds & kids sacrified of high on all sides to finance the middle extortion. God Bless Edie. I love you. You were fucked up. I know why...we all do. Kind been there...
GoddessElvina 2 years ago
They drove Nancy Spungen to total lunacy. Is that the skeleton in Elizabeth II's family tree? At least she was real & the world knows. Its more than we can say for Prince William & the whole lot of that family...
GoddessElvina 2 years ago

These days she would have got some help and hopefully lived past the age of 28 - such a young age to die.
brunsk123 2 years ago
@brunsk123 What is the book about Edie called? I was outbid on DVD---Factory Girl on Ebay. Did you see it? I wanna check it out. I know nothing about Edie, but her story seems interesting! Along with the whole Warhol group, too.
giaisbomb 2 years ago
Giaisbomb, I wish I could remember. It was by a women whose surname was Stein, I think .Maybe if you go to Amazon and google Edie Sedgewick? I'm sorry to be not much help.
brunsk123 2 years ago
@brunsk123 I think you are absolutely right, it was sexual abuse, or intimidation, even beatings, at the hands of her father. Edie mentions it in Ciao! Manhattan. The portrayal of the character Susan Superstar was partly acting, partly true.
Edie was spoiled materially, but starved and tortured emotionally. You can see that in her eyes. Oh, those sprightly, beautiful but also deeply sorrowful light brown eyes that I will never forget.
MowgliX 1 year ago 51
@MowgliX Her Father drugged her more than once, even as a child, so if she had substance abuse issues, how would she even know differently when the way things were handled in her home was to give massive amounts of drugs? Her Father actually bragged to Neuwirth how he had drugged Edie & tricked her into thinking she was ill to lock her up in the "bins" (psych ward) he lied & said she was homicidal. He did this when she came home for X-mas 1966.

Close, but backwards. Hilton has the ability to be the Edie of the 2000's but she is too self absorbed and has no connection to the arts.

I think she looks like Rachel Bilson, though her voice sounds nothing like Edie's, so she could never play her.

You're right, most people don't see it, but the footage of Edie's wedding where she has long brown hair, a tan, and neutral makeup shows the resemblance.

Whats the title of the song and who does sing it?
VitoPossilipo 2 years ago
moe tucker singing "after hours" , the band is the velvet underground. considering the count in the begining it prolly means lou is playing guitar, or theres just someone on bass cuz she wouldn't count to herself i don't think
