Ernie is referring to him taking over the Tonight Show for two nights a week after Steve Allen got his Sunday night prime time show on NBC and cut back hosting Tonight to 3 nights a week.
I did a show with Edie Adams (a true and amazing professional!) and told her about my admiration for Ernie. What a loss to television his death was! Thanks for posting this video.
Two great gifted people. I understand that even though there was turmoil in their private family life, they were a very happy couple. It's a shame that Ernie died so young. He had a lot of comedic talent left to explore!
Two great comedic talents. Ernie was a true genius of early TV and Edie is now mostly known as the Tiparillo girl, not for what a brilliant talent she was. They must have had such a fun marriage.
Ernie was a true comic genius. He re-invented the art. For example, tilting the camera and tilting the table where he sat, then he used gravity as a special effect. Looked like he was sitting at a level table but then when he placed a marble or bubble gum on the surface it would roll away from him. He was the greatest. Wrote his own commercials. And The Nairobi Trio was fall down funny!!! Like I said, a genius. And, yes, Edie was hotttt!!!
FYI: The charecter played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the Watchmen was known as "the Comedian. The make up job on him made him look just like the late Ernie Kovacs
oh how i loved these two people and when he was killed i was just a child but still was crushed -- and now she is gone -- but she is with ernie and their daughter(s) -- how wonderful for them -- how sad for us
You're sharp to notice that! I think she may have been trying to help keep big ol' Ernie in the (shared) seating there, though. ; )
What a priceless clip. Both so young...youngest candid thing I think they did together(if you don't count the hundreds of live shows on local TV). Obviously so in love. Tony Randall looks like he was a good pal to them both, too. I'm sure he loved talking opera with Edith!
This is one of the few times Gil Fates gets a mention on his own show.
This broadcast occurred a few months before Rodgers and Hammerstein cast her as the Fairy Godmother in the March 1957 live TV musical version of "Cinderella."
What a home life these talents must have had. What with her singing and his comedy, it must have been some household to remember.
It is interesting to speculate how Ernie's TV career might have evolved in the 1960s if he had not died so young so untimely.

Doesn't the panel smell the cigar?

@zevsiberiano Back in 1956, people were more used to people smoking. So it wouldn't have been a big deal.

5:08-10- Sid Caesar and Ernie Kovacs were on the same show? That must have been brilliant! I wonder if a tape of it survives.
SIMPFANN 3 years ago
Actually, Ernie hosted a summer show in place of "Caesar's Hour". Remember, back then video tape was not in widespread use.

Notice: right after they sit down, it looks like Edie is playing in Ernie's lap with her right hand. She even has a sly grin on her face.
