@KASPLARFO How is this fake? How do you think TV and radio antennas get to the top of towers. SOmebody has to put them up there and bolt them down.. Im one of the lucky ones.
This brings back memories. I rigged in the early 90's in Maryland/DC. Am an Arborist now. People tell me, when I am 60'-70' in a tree, that I am amazing and I tell them that it is nothing compared with the tower guys, of which I am no longer. You guys are the boss. Hats off to you...
i live in north of kansas city in liberty and my friend moved out to the country outside lawerence, he lives near this antenna and i was wondering what the coordinates are?
What do they do with towers after they are dismantled? Thing is I found an old radio tower laying in sections next to a standing radio tower in my town. I was excited. Only problem (maybe) is that it doesn't belong to a company like SBA Towers or American Towers or something cool and independent like that; it belongs "to the town" or something; I think it is a public service transmitter; the only phone number was the County Sheriff's department; and I'm not gonna call them asking about it!
@BurningTirez You should probly tell someone about this 2600 foot tower because if its real then its the second tallest structure on earth...lol at least google things before you try and lie about them buddy.
The actual transmitters (in big cabinets), along with other stuff like backup power supplies (eg. diesel generators) and other comms equipment. Big feed cables run from the transmitters up to the aerials on the mast.
nowhere near that...40-50k per year is what i make...which is better than alot of college degree jobs get you(and i went to college). but the main thing is do you want to LOVE going to work everyday? than look into it there's always openings(noones beatin down the doors...high turnover) rigger is one of the last jobs where OJT is the only way to learn! BTW i took a cut in pay to do this because i hated working indoors and i don't regret a thing! Everyone wants an office with a view;)
He is standing on the gin pole section, which is used for lifting and/or removing sections of tower or long antennas. It looks like a UHF TV array being removed. Just another day in the life of a rigger.
wow thanks for the video, that must be fun being up that high!! now why would you get fried by the antenna if the radio waves are such a low frequency compared to ionizing radiation? is it because of microwave signals, but not radio right like mhz. thank you !
ok these views are freaking me out. i would be hugging and clawing the structure for fear of falling of being blown off. you gotta have balls of steel to do this i bet. imagine a cable breaking... your life is over, what do you do?
@stacker4501 Never heard of rigging failure? All mechanical parts can fail, I would never get on a suspended load, and i am a certified rigger and climber
It's very windy here in Wyoming at ground level. At this height in the video, though, the wind is obviously a hazard, and according to a book I have it is a certain percentage (much) stronger than at ground level. I am like willbill808 because I'd have a heart attack too!!!
When watching these tower videos, one usually doesn't think about what would happen if they dropped the camera--I suppose the camera and the recording medium would be destroyed (hence we wouldn't be watching this video or having this discussion) unless the operator attached the camera to himself.
I got dizzy watching you going up

The UHF antenna is in FAR better shape than the gin pole that clearly exhibits massive rusting and faded paint.
As a crane operator I would refuse the load.
In fact, Tex Kennedy, of Kennedy and Assoc. in San Antonio was upset that I refused a load with his gin pole.
We ended up using the stinger from another machine.
And, hams?! some are flat out dangerous!

cdurack 2 years ago 2
Does that mean that to receive that signal that my antenna should be 1/4 the length of that; 15 feet? Why is that so huge??!!?!
1DanielChristensen 2 years ago
No, you use one quarter of the wavelength with a ground plane or a halfwave dipole.
If it is a VHF transmitter broadcasting at around 100 mhz then that is a 3 mtr wavelength so your 1/4 vave would be a 29 inch length of wire
petermines 2 years ago
@1DanielChristensen I doesn't have to mean the whole thing is one antenna: it could be that it has separate antenna's doing the job alltogether.

Are you hooked to the gin pole? How is it attached? (I'm always a bit wary of attaching myself to anything but the tower structure)
ccoraxfan 4 years ago
Yes, i'm hooked to the pole. It's a track pole attached with 1 inch steel chokers. Its not going anywhere.
stacker4501 4 years ago
i myself like attaching to the tower itself, and nothing that is bolted or so. A false sense of safety i guess...
