  • 'D'I'Y' music is most important...'punk' and stuff like this being the beginning of it, and now the idea is more accessible than ever thanks to vst's, internet etc. I, personally , am delighted that crap like 'Top Of The Pops' et al , is no longer needed or relevant...be your OWN 'popstar' whilst preening in the mirror...can't be bad...or worse than the alternative.

  • my best friend was manager of whiskey a go go in thos days , my favorite, daniel weberster ,what happened to him. they your GREAT!!!!

  • its more like youtube comments od

  • awesome.. i bought this when it first came out.. agree with TheBodski68.. the beginning of Acid House.

  • who are The normal and what are they ( or him) doing now???

  • @merlin5476 ... The Normal is pretty much Daniel Miller, who went to create (and still operates) Mute Records, check out BBC 4 docu Synth Britannia

  • I am sat listening to these 30 year old tracks, that have just as much edge as they did when I bought it from Frantic all those years ago, while my poor kids are digesting another helping of X Factor.... god help us!!!!!

  • @llamafarmer7 Sadly, all that rubbish and the rest alike have slowly taken over the minds of the past 2 generations. But that's the so called moral majority for you, they're easily taken in by anyone good-looking and all the glitz that goes on around it rather than the music they're listening to. All the greats will be turning in their graves :-(

  • @rp61wasinnocentok Don't be fooled by the artifice of popularity. The kids aren't as dumb as you might think.

  • @TheMusicolophile I agree not all, but around 99% of them are.

Sorry, but the last generation of kids (maybe more)

have let down those before them. They don't have a clue,

they're dumb, lazy, selfish, uncaring, boring and dull.

I'd usually say "but that's just my opinion",

but I dont' think it is just mine.

They all want to be the next piece of talentless fodder.

  • @llamafarmer7 Actually, I'll correct my previous comment, FORTUNATELY there is no god.

  • This is the beginning of Acid House / Techno 10 years early, cracking tune

  • Anybody spot the pic of Richard Butler from the Psychedelic Furs at the end of that ?

  • @RyanMatthias Yeah! Could be... I think 'shitty music' is a bit harsh though. But that's just your opinion and you're entitled to it. Electronic music had only done so much up to this point, and no-one was doing anything that sounded quite like this, apart from Devo of course, who were totally awesome at what they were doing.

If you didn't read the description, it's worth pointing out in 1980 Grace Jones covered the b-side of this song, a track called 'Warm Leatherette'

  • @rp61wasinnocentok Agree with all this and other thoughts about KROQ late 70s early 80s, but wanted to add that a lot of this was really derivative of Kraftwerk. They did it first and sometimes close to best. Check out "Pocket Calculator" for example.

  • @BigBrauner I think TVOD came out just before pocket calculator...1978...I might be wrong but I looked for this song for SO LONG....I love both songs!

  • @RyanMatthias age doesnt matter you said you werent around when this came out neither was i and i definitely get it. this music is just as relevant or more relevant as it was in 78. The music was meant to be minimal.. plus back when this came out synths were just progressing technology wise. This music was highly inspired by J.G. Ballard and the futurist manifesto. I only wish I could have been a part of this movement in music because I understand it almost too well to not have been a part of it.

  • i had this on vinyl lool

  • turn off

  • +!!!

  • haha i love stumbling upon stuff on youtube

  • Miller - Tovey - DM

  • I lived in LA in 78 when/where the "New Wave" music scene was happening so fast our heads were spinning (with delight!). KROQ rocked our socks off every stinkin' day! It was such a great time to be alive. So many different types of music and room for everyone at the table. I miss those days of creativity flowing in the streets. Thanks for posting, great job!

  • @pastol It's so true. If it wasn't for the punk/new wave scene that developed just into the late '70s, the decade might have ended up as one of the most boring ever. But indeed it turned out to be possibly the best to live through, and the absolute perfect time to form a band. I also have fond memories, there was definitely something powerful & majestic in the air...

  • @rp61wasinnocentok That's exactly how I was describing it again just recently! That during the 70's and early 80's there was MAGIC in the air!!!

  • @pastol I lived in LA at the time too. I remember when I first heard this little tune, hadn't heard anything remotely like it before. So much amazing and innovative music came out in the late '70s and EARLY '80s, it really laid the foundation for pretty much all the popular music of today. In a way it's sad that there hasn't really been a musical "Cambrian Period" like that since then.

  • @pastol damn great post! great times and 106.7 sure did help bring it to us. you could hear this song at 7 o clock in the morning then on KROQ. And nothing like Rodney taking us all the way there is your were home on Sunday night. But most of us were out and about seeing so many great new bands rockin it live!

  • @pastol "Rodney on the ROQ" was a great help in changing things too....he would seek out the most obscure, underground and undiscovered music and bands and bring them to the ears of so many...Rodney on the ROQ, Rodney it's 8 o'clock!....Sunday nights remember?

  • @seechazgo :) "Rodney on the ROQ" What a great show he had. Used to go see him at Knott's Berry Scary farm every year. Weird Al was always there along with some more obscure bands. Great fun. I'll never forget the sound of Rodney's voice. So not a radio voice. But the man was an encyclopedia of third rail music.

  • @pastol I know I am responding 7 mos after you posted, but just wanna say: how interesting - I didn't know new wave actually started in the late 70's. I am an 80's kid, so I thought new wave started around 83'. Could also be I grew up in Houston, and maybe it had not really caught on here yet, or that I was 8 in 78'. But, just wanted to comment I find that an interesting fact about pop culture from back in the day. Cheers :)

  • @jhchouston HA! I still get e-mails on responses to this. You might want to check this out. Google "New Wave Music" and click on the wiki page that pops up as the first result. A small slice of the big pie, but interesting. Cheers!

  • the description is wrong boyd rice was the first artist on mute read standing in 2 circles.

  • @botzimektet The description says 'release' NOT 'artist'

I'd never heard of boyd rice until you said, and after a certain amount of research I can only say you're wrong about that anyway, by 2 years. The Mute label was only ever formed initially just to release this one single, but it became a cult hit ensuring the future of the label. It's been well documented, and it appears like this Boyd Rice guy has been telling little porkies in that book...

  • @rp61wasinnocentok

I don't think Boyd rice is a very belieavable person, but how come you know mute without knowing Boyd Rice, one of the most known industrial artists?

  • @gombie I take it you're referring to a reply I made to botzimektet's comment 3 months ago. I think they may have made an error by not reading the description correctly. My further statement was made on the strength of research i'd done.

  • @botzimektet It is well documented that The Normal was, in fact, Daniel Miller, who founded Mute records just to get this record realeased. Of course, he later discovered Depeche Mode and the rest is history. Interestingly there was a story that Depeche never actually signed a written contract and it was all done on the shake of a hand. "The handshake......seals a contract", if you like.

  • thanx for the upload and video

    lightyears ahead of their time!

  • This is just so Hypnotic.

Just like Cabaret voltaire's Voice of america.

  • Reminds Me of Faces Nightclub - They always played this |& Warm leatherette - Always wish the guy produced more.......

  • maybe some people find his monotone, slightly camp voice adds to the song and that's fine, but i think the music is far superior

  • brilliant ending t0 a fantastic track! The s0und y0u get when y0u fall asleep in fr0n 0f tv...n0t much these days i believe because they just stick s0me junk/spam pr0grames after midnight. Anyway, i hate TV!

  • This is so amazing, and brilliant propaganda info. sounds like Vegan marxists.

  • amazing...i'm 13 and i love this

  • Took me forever to find this single back around '83-'84 or so. Great stuff.

  • I'm 19 again!

  • wow! old memories! thanks!

  • The 1 dislike ODed on normality.

  • sounds too fast. pitch too sharp.

  • Man I missed this song! Youtube kicks ass. I haven't heard this since the late 70's. It used to get day time radio play on KROQ in Los Angeles. How times have changed.

  • @TheStrainers Yep,I recall hearing this on KROQ,If I remember correctly they played it once after The Germ's Lexicon Devil e.p.God,I must have been about 12.

  • @exeuroweenie KROQ played it at least once a week in the morning for a while along with Warm Leatherette. Good times! Ha Germs on day time radio.

  • Awesome track. Light years ahead of its time. Still relevant today.

  • thumbs up to this! Joop Tv!!

  • i don't need a TV screen.. I just stick the areal into my skin...words to live by, now more then ever LOL..I STILL HAVE THIS SINGLE ..WONDER HOW MUCH THEY PAY FOR IT ON E-BAY?

  • @roamnet I have it too.Sadly,many rare/classic 45's I have that I searched on Ebay don't sell for much.Exceptions seem to be when a members deceased,e.g.;The Cramps,The Germs,and probably The Slits now.

  • @exeuroweenie who died in the Slits?

  • @TheStrainers Ari Up,kinda of a shock since I saw them live in '06.She seemed like her screech, dreads and legs would go on for eternity.

  • @exeuroweenie Ari Up, RIP

  • This made me as a 14 year old go out and record breaking glass and echoing traffic noise, nothing came of that but...

  • thanks for posting, after i saw this BBC special where they talked to daniel miller i had to check out the norma

  • electro has come a long long way...

  • yes this is original video remember seeing it in the early 80's

  • Someone should do an updated version, 'YouTube O.D.'

"I don't need a computer screen, the WiFi signal beams into my brain..."

  • this is sort of underrated. I would assume MBM is influenced by this, and while at first the lyrics are best described as "pedestrian", the line about "stick the aerial, into my skin" is kind of cool.

  • AWESOME!!!

  • Fantastic! Still have my original single :)

  • Crazy video!I love it!!

  • Anyone notice the samples of Margo and Barbara from The Good Life between 2:16 and 2:24? hahah

  • Decades ahead of its time, and nowhere near as widely known as it should be.

So glad you saved it here, and shared it with everyone who knows to look, and everyone who just trips over it.

    And ditto djcrudo's comment, too.

  • brilliant, thanks.daniel miller was a pure genius and one of the first of the synth artists

  • At 1:04 I see Joop T.V. does anyone know what that means?

  • To be honest i've no idea, but...

JOOP! is a designer clothing and cosmetics company founded by German fashion designer Wolfgang Joop. It is based in Hamburg, Germany. The company is most notable for its aftershave range.

In 1998 Joop sold 95% of his JOOP! shares to an investor and then in 2001 he sold the remaining 5%

  • Thank you for the prompt response. I wondered if there was a certain TV sender in the 70's named Joop. My kid's named Joop after his uncle. He'll appreciate seeing his name on TV.

  • @dominoesnowdutch 9IT MEANS YOU NEED COME CSOCIAL LIGFE

  • thanks for posting.

your "touches" at the end show great respect for the original, and fit in very well.

anybody posting silly tasteless comments about this song (like: this sucks!) should be punished without pity.

  • It's nice to see a cool comment about showing respect by my finishing touches at the end of this video. And I have to say, you're spot on. I suppose I could have just shown a snap of the cover, but that would have been too easy, and I always think it's nice to show a bit of class stirred in with a large portion of esteem :)

    Cheers dj

  • @rp61wasinnocentok

You did a great job! And it feels like it was footage from the original! Great job, thank you for taking the time to do it!

  • But what if I truly believe this sucks?

Sure, it may be ahead of it's time, but that doesn't mean it's good music. It's repetitive but not in the way good electronic music is, where there will be gradual variation. The vocals are hideous, like a charachiture of electroclash singing. What's worse is that it is pretending to have some sort of artistic value in its lyrics. Musically, it is a bore; there is no harmonic variation or even real chord changes. At least it's better than warm leatherette

  • well, there's no accounting for taste, as they say...

indeed, i guess Daniel Miller himself could possibly agree with you about his (poor) skills as a songwriter (just check out some interviews!) - T.V.O.D./Warm Leatherette is the only studio release by The Normal, after which he immediately moved on to do what he can do best - producing... shaping (other people's) songs with a sound unique and groundbreaking.

  • this should be taken as a display of what he intended to produce on his (back then) newly founded Mute Records. and yes, it's truly ahead of it's time! that's where its importance and cult status come from, certainly not from the song structure.

  • I think you are missing the point, you need to look at it from 32 years in the past, and you could not play chords on a Korg 700s anyway.

  • @MagicDolphinGO : It's a matter of opinion or taste !

  • @MagicDolphinGO It was made in 1978, you philistine!

  • @cuntylishus

How does the year it was made affect its artistic value? The Brandenburg Concertos were written in 1721.

  • Is this the original video? Made at the time of the song? Who made it? Please add some information!

  • As far as I know this is the original video, if not, I don't know who put it together.

But, when I acquired it, it cut off towards the end.

So I just added cleaner audio, & from 2:32 onwards,

I made up the extra footage to finish it off.

The guy staring at a TV is a picture on the back of the 7" single cover, the shot I made to flicker on the TV screen is of course (for those that don't know) taken from the front of the cover, which I also added for a split second at the start of the video.

  • Thx! At the time I did not see any video, but the song was a turning point in music history, at least in my own music history.

  • Damn i love it please keep it original till one of these fucking bands cover it

  • Bought this when it first came out in the late seventies and thirty years later it still sounds sweet

  • One of the best ever, I love it.

  • its the best song form the 80s elektronik...
